Patents Sealing a flat-panel device Applicant: Candescent Technologies Corp, USA and Sony Corp, Japan A flat-panel display is hermetically sealed by a process in which a first plate structure is positioned generally opposite a second plate structure such that sealing material provided over the latter structure lies between the plate structures. In a gravitational sealing technique, the first plate structure is positioned vertically below the second plate structure. The sealing material is heated so that it moves vertically downwards under the influence of gravity to meet the first plate structure and seal together the two structures. In what is referred to as a global-heating, gap-jumping technique, the plate structures and sealing material are heated to cause the material to jump a gap between the material itself and the first plate structure. When the first plate structure is positioned vertically above the second one, the sealing material moves vertically upwards to meet the first plate structure and close the gap. Patent number: WO 02/10846 Inventors: P.N. Ludwig, T.S. Fahlen, S. Kanagawa, J.Y. Sun Publication date: 7 February 2002 Bearing device seal Applicant: Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd, Japan A bearing device formed in such a way as to seal one end of a bearing boss with a cap, comprising an oil-impregnated sintered bearing, is described. This holds (‘rotatably’) a shaft fixed to a rotor and the bearing boss. A lubricating oil that is leaking from the bearing can be held and collected by providing a number of grooves in the inside wall of the cap, which means that the operational service life of the bearing can be increased. Patent number: WO 02/10602 Inventor: H. Fujinaka Publication date: 7 February 2002 Copolymer sealant compositions Applicant: General Electric Co, USA This patent provides details of condensation curable poly(fluoroorgano)siloxane-poly(silary- lene)siloxane block copolymer compositions. These have a glass transition temperature that does not exceed about –54°C. They also have an excellent solvent resistance, a characteristic that is useful in sealants. Polyalkoxysilylorgano compounds, such as 1,4-bis[trimethoxysilyl- (ethyl)]benzene are also effective as cross-linkers. Patent number: WO 02/10258 Inventors: N. Singh, J.T. Leman, J.M. Whitney, O.H. Krabbenhoft Publication date: 7 February 2002 Polymerization of olefinic orthoesters Applicant: E.I. Du Pont De Nemours and Co, USA Selected novel olefinic orthoesters may be copoly- merized with other olefins using certain late metal transition catalysts, to form novel polyolefins containing orthoester pendant groups. These orth- oester groups may be partially or fully hydrolyzed to esters and/or hydroxyl groups, and the resulting polymers may be crosslinked by reaction with poly- functional compounds. These polymers are useful as curable plastics or elastomers, for use in coatings, sealants and caulks, and as moulding resins. Patent number: WO 02/10230 Inventors: L. Wang, N.E. Drysdale Publication date: 7 February 2002 Cylinder head gasket Applicant: Motorenfabrik Hatz GmbH & Co Kg, Germany In a single-cylinder or multi-cylinder internal com- bustion engine a drainage channel is provided in the cylinder head, which opens out radially at one end, within the annular gasket, in the region of the inner wall of the cylinder liner. The other end is connected to the inlet or outlet port in the cylinder head. Patent number: WO 02/10572 Inventors: G. Kampichler, S. Jäger Publication date: 7 February 2002 Joining pipes Applicant: Wamonde Co Ltd, Japan A method is described that corrects ‘peaking’, which occurs in the pipe joints, by attaching a stiffening ring, a lock ring and a stop ring to the outer surfaces of steel pipes. Also detailed is a method which, in attaching a joint ring to the inner surface of a steel pipe, corrects ‘peaking’ which occurs in the joint ring, and a way of producing a stiffening ring that is used in this joint. The patent also provides details of a construction for a packing used in the joint; a method of laying steel pipes having this joint; and a seal surface construction for the joint. According to the patent the production of pipe joints in a factory can be automated by using these techniques. The field operation also can be simplified. Patent number: WO 02/12772 Inventor: N. Takei Publication date: 14 February 2002 Fluid delivery systems Applicant: Anaid Nominees Pty Ltd, Australia The subject of this patent is a bearing assembly for relatively moveable pipe sections in a fluid delivery system. The assembly comprises a main body that is adapted to be connected to one end of one pipe section. The main body has in a generally radially extending annular face; a coaxial seat; a generally annular bearing member; and a coaxial groove to receive an annular sealing member. An annular centre swivel section is adapted to be connected to one end of a second pipe section and has on one generally radially extending face, and a coaxial seat to engage the first bearing member. It also has a second coaxial seat on an opposed generally radially extending face to receive a second annular bearing member. This swivel section includes an annular, axially extending boss. This extends away from the main body, with the opposed generally radially extending face pointing radially outwards from the boss. A bearing end cap is adapted to engage the second pipe section and is fastened to the main body. It sandwiches the swivel section and bearing members. The end cap has a seat for the second bearing member, and a second seal member is disposed between the end cap and the swivel section. Patent number: WO 02/12771 Inventor: G. Haviland Publication date: 14 February 2002 Brush seal assembly Applicant: Advanced Component & Materials Inc, USA A brush seal assembly including a bristle strip (having a plurality of bristles mounted at an angle to at least one rail), and an annular holder for supporting the bristle strip, is provided. In one embodiment, the bristle strip is flexible, such that the strip can be readily bent by hand and the annular holder is preferably U-shaped. The brush seal assembly may be used with conventional mounting techniques, and may be mounted within a unitary or segmented holder. Once installed, the seal assembly acts as a static and dynamic seal in order to seal the gap between a high pressure source and a low pressure source. Patent number: WO 02/12759 Inventors: A. Currently, solid-state signals utilize LEDs with plastic/epoxy seals. A glass-to-metal hermetic seal is over 1000 times better at sealing such semiconductor devices than a plastic/epoxy seal, which can allow oxygen and other contaminants to come in contact with the LED semiconductor material.
