Surely, in pointing to the fact that the coin bears the image of Caesar, Jesus intends to refer this debate to the Second Commandment: "You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that is in heaven above, or is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water underneath the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them" (Ex 20:4-5). Get it? Those who have this coin in their pocket are indicted as idolaters. Probably Jesus is saying that all of these idolatrous coins that are stamped with the image of Caesar ought to be sent back to Caesar. We know by this point in Matthew's Gospel that Jesus does not recognize distinctions between politics and religion, or between religion and economics for that matter. Somehow these loyalties are related to the Second Commandment, to the worship of the true and living God and to the avoidance of worship of idols. As Jesus has said earlier, "No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth" (Mt 6:24). Presumably, just as one cannot serve God and wealth, one also cannot serve God and the emperor. Most Christians seem to believe that this debate in which Jesus is engaged with the Pharisees and the Herodians is no longer a real debate because in a democracy the people rule. We think that we have solved these primitive problems with politics because we have created a democracy. And if democracy itself is not a solution to the problem of God and government, we also think we have solved the problem of God and Caesar through our constitutional separation of church and state. FULFILLING GOD’S PURPOSE! We will begin our stewardship programFulfilling God’s Purpose! on September8, 2019. Christian stewardship is thefree and joyous activity of managing ourlives and blessings according to God’swill. Stewardship refers to all theactivities of our lives. We are stewards inour homes, workplaces, schools, and inour neighborhoods. Stewardship is a daily, ongoing lifestyle thatdetermines how we use all the gifts our Creator has given us. If ourchurch is to grow, expand our worship offerings to the community, continue to have the best music program in the city, and achieve ourvision goals–we need to be generous in our financial commitmentsthis year.

PRAYER NETIn his book, The Colors of Hope: Becoming People of Mercy,Justice, and Love, Richard Dahlstrom calls Christians to anintentional goal of blessing the lives of others in our midst. We areto be the artists who bring color into a world that is, too often, seenas gray. God gives each of us the tools we need to spread His love, whether it be in grand endeavors or in the actions of our everydaylife. In 2016, the Disciple Life Class became the artists by laying down acanvas of gray as we studied this inspirational book. As weprogressed, we added color and symbols of hope, culminating withthe addition of a prayer net. This piece of art is on display inFellowship Hall. The prayer net was inspired by the one in Ely Cathedral in Ely,England. Recognizing that Jesus called ordinary fishermen to followhim, this net symbolizes that God calls ordinary people to proclaimthe good news that Christ brought with Him and it is to ordinarypeople that God blesses with His love when they call upon His Name.Take a minute to tie a string on the net, and, if you wish, write aprayer request on one of the tags provided and tie it to the net. Visit this net often, to watch as it transforms into a colorfulexpression of the artistry of God’s people as we offer up our joys, cares, and concerns to Him.

HILLSIDE FOOD PANTRY FEEDS MORE THAN 2,000 FAMILIES

For more than a decade,Wichita’s HillsideChristian Church hassponsored a CommunityFood Pantry. ChurchmemberJoAnn Briles-Kleinwanted Hillside to tapinto the Kansas Food

Bank to help the poor. The Community Food Pantry grew rapidly andin 2018, helped feed 2,223 families in Wichita. Food is stored anddistributed from a dedicated room in Hillside’s building. Anyone canreceive food, no more often than once a month; the weeklydistribution always draws a number of people to receive food, as wellas clothes and shoes when available. Church members also offerprayer with visitors when requested. A large group of volunteersmakes the pantry work, picking up items from the Kansas Food Bank, sorting and storing, and helping with distribution. They are alwayssmiling, happy to be of service; about a dozen volunteers work eachweek. Money and food is donated by church members. With the lowcost of food from Kansas Food Bank and gifts from members, thesack of food that a family receives costs $4.63 and with carefulplanning, will feed two people for about a week. Christ multiplies thegifts to feed many more than we could feed alone.
