The role of local newspaper advertising in your political campaign in print and online.

Sources: 2015 Scarborough, 2015 AAM Audit for 12 months ending December 31,2014.

Newspapers deliver voters. The Herald-Tribune reaches 296,800 people in Sarasota and Manatee counties, especially those affluent, well educated, older people most likely to vote.

Newspapers deliver credibility.Voters look to newspapers and their websites for the information they need to make up their minds about candidates and issues. Newspaper advertising gives your campaign an aura of credibility and respectability that’s unmatched.

Newspapers deliver undecided voters.Reaching undecided voters in the last days of the campaign can tip the outcome of the elections in your candidate’s favor. In fact, one out of two voters experiences some level of indecision in the final days before an election. Most importantly, among those who say they experience some indecision, three out of four are regular newspaper readers in print and online.

Newspapers deliver reliability. Newspaper readers seek out in-depth, detailed political information. One in two voters say they got their daily paper specifically to look for advertisements.

Newspapers deliver target marketing. The Herald-Tribune has established sections based on geographical zones, and is able to target an advertisement, preprinted flyer or brochure for insertion and delivery within specific ZIP codes.

Newspapers deliver information voters want. Endorsements: A newspaper ad is the perfect place to list endorsements garnered from community leaders and other notable supporters of your candidate or issue.

Issue clarification: Newspaper ads allow the candidate to explain his or her position on a particular issue, and can be used to reinforce radio or television ads on the same subject as well as rebut an opponent’s attack.

Candidate comparison: Newspaper ads lend themselves to point-by-point comparisons and contrasts between candidates.

Appeals for contributions or support: Like direct mail, the newspaper can be used for appeals to voters for monetary contributions or volunteer support.

Newspapers deliver an essential ingredient to your media mix. The Herald-Tribune offers much more than just ads on a page. Today’s newspaper is a virtual one-stop, multimedia opportunity: from creating your own website including a mobile site, to linking up to Herald-Tribune.com. We can help manage your social presence and recommend SEO/SEM solutions. Any political advertisement that is paid for by a candidate and that is published, displayed or circulated prior to, or on the day of, any election must prominently state: “Political advertisement paid for and approved by (name of candidate) (party affiliation) for (office sought).”

Editorial endorsements of a candidate are acceptable for inclusion in advertisements, if they are from the current election period and are for the office currently sought. Endorsements must be for the upcoming election and are invalid after the current elections (primary or general) are over. Media endorsements may be listed in a political ad by indicating that “candidate has been endorsed by newspaper, magazine, etc.“ However, no quotations may be used from a media endorsement unless the endorsement is used in its entirety. Proof of actual endorsement must be provided in the form of a tearsheet.

Personal endorsements require a signed release or copy of the document carrying the endorser’s signature.

Copy that obviously invites a reply form the opposition to clarify an issue, defend a charge or respond to an allegation must appear in sufficient time prior to election to make a reply possible. The last day a new issue may be published is the Friday prior to any Tuesday election. An issue will be determined new by an advertising manager.

Payment for all political advertising is required in advance of space deadline for publication. Cash is not acceptable.

No news articles will be accepted for use in political ads from the Herald-Tribune or any other source, unless reprinted in its entirety.

All political ads will be reviewed by an advertising manager before acceptance. Advertisements are also subject to review by the Publisher. The Herald-Tribune Media Group reserves the right to reject any advertisement on any grounds whatsoever.
