IN SLABS AND SCREEDSE.I.A.isthespecialadditivethatwhenappliedontotheEPSvirginbeadsguaranteesaperfectmixingoftheEPSbeadswiththecementandwater.EPSisamongstthebest insulatingmaterialwiththemostcosteffectiveperformance.DuetothedifferentspecificweightsitisalmostimpossibletomixEPSbeadswithcementsincetheytendtoseparate.WithE.I.A.thisproblemiscompletelyremovedandahomogeneousmixwithahighthermalinsulationlevelandcon-stantqualitycanbeachieved.· Perfectmixingwiththewaterandbinders.· HomogeneousdistributionoftheEPSbeadsthroughthegrout.· Perfectpumpingcapability.· Preventionofpolystyrenebeadflotation.
APPLICATION MANUAL . POLITERM® BLU RANGEThe preparation of this manual is a complex operation requiring many checks of the text, images and graphics. Experience teaches us that it is almost impossible to publish a manual flawlessly. Should you notice any errors during the reading of this manual, please inform us promptly. (What is reported in the manual has to be intended as merely indicative and none guarantee can be given if not directly taken from certification and belonging to the workmanlike. FOR USE AS A BASE LAYER BENEATH SAND-CEMENT AND SIMILAR TYPES OF SCREEDS
APPLICATION:lightweightthermalinsulatingscreed,madeusingPoliterm®Blubeads,suppliedinbagsof500Land/or200L,laidbyskilledinstallersusingthe base layer method for beneath sand cement screed, sand anhydrite or premixed screed.
INTENDED USE:groundbearingfloorslabsonadequatelycompactedhardcore/sub-baseflatroofingwithorwithoutfallsvoidfilling,intermediatefloorsoncorrugatedsteelsheetingetc.
MINIMUM APPLICATION THICKNESS: 50 mm.For thicknesses less than 50 mm proceed as follows:· Thicknessesbetween30mmand50mmonwellconsolidatedsurfaces(e.g.:withelectricalconduitand/orpipessecurelyhau-nchedwithcementmortar):thelesserthicknessmaybeconsideredacceptable.
· Forthicknessesbetween10mmand30mm:addtothemixofcementandPoliterm®Bluabout200kg/m³ofaggregatewithamaximumgrainsizeof0,6mm(mixedmanually)andincludeanelectro-weldedmetalmesh(ø 2mm).
ITEM SPECIFICATION:CreationofthermalinsulatingbaseslabpreparedwithPoliterm®BlumanufacturedbyEdiltecoS.p.A.:superli-ghtaggregateinvirginexpandedpolystyrenebeadswithconstantparticlesize(beadsø3-6mmorø2mm(Politerm®BluFein)andwithcontrolleddensity;premixedpearlbypearlwithE.I.A.®additiveintheproductionphase,whichallowsperfectmixingwithwaterbinder,eliminatesthebeadfloatingphenomenonandguaranteestheirhomogeneousdistributioninthemix.Themixcanbebatchedwithadensityof200to350kg/m³usingPortland32.5CemIoCemII,withoutaddinganysandand/orotheradditives.Therefore,everycubicmetreofmortarwillbepreparedonlywith840LofPoliterm®Blubeads,Portland32.5CemIoCemIIcementinthedosagesprescribedandtherelevantvolumeofwaterrequiredforhydration.Thelightweightscreedobtained,issuitableforsubsequentscreedlayingmadeofsandandcementorsandandanhydrite.Edil-tecotechnologysuggestsalsothenewhighinsulatingliquidscreedwithadensityofjust130kg/m3.ItispossibletoobtainthismixingthePoliterm®BluFeinwith110kg/m3 of cement.

When placing Politerm® Blu screed over existing concrete slabs, concrete beam decks, compacted hardcore sub-base, etc: it can be done without using an electro welded mesh in the pour. If the receiving surface however comprises insulation boards, a bituminous and/or synthetic waterproofing layer, tiled floors, or corrugated steel sheet, etc., before pouring Politerm® Blu screed sheets of electro welded lath (minimum dimensions): wire ø 2 mm - mesh 50 x 50 mm) need to be included, appropriately tied and spaced from the laying surface.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS:· WhenlayingthePoliterm®Bluscreedanyexistingstructural jointsand/orexpansion joints inthereceivingsurfacemustbemaintainedandextendedupthroughthePoliterm®Bluscreed.
· BeforelayingthePoliterm®Bluscreed,thoroughlycleanthereceivingsurface.· WhenlayingonaporousorcementitiousexistingflooraftercleaningthesurfaceandbeforelayingthePoliterm®Bluscreed,wetthefloorwellbutwithoutleavingpuddles.
· Whenlayingonanonporousorwaterproofsurfacelikeplasticsheetingoverinsulationboards,waterprooflayersortiledfloorsdonotwetthesurface.
· Whenrequired,dayjointsinthePoliterm®Bluscreedshouldbecastvertically.· Whencontinuingthepourthedayjointsneedtobetreatedwith Edilstik latexadhesive,tobeused“freshonfresh”.· AvoidmixingandlayingPoliterm®Bluwhentemperaturesarebelow5°C.Anyantifreeze additivesthatmaybeusedmustbecompatiblewiththephysicalchemicalpropertiesofPoliterm®Blu.Thecontractorshouldhoweverevaluatethecostsandbene-fitsofusingantifreezeadditivesonacasebycasebasis.
· WhenmixingPoliterm®Blu,strictlyfollowthedosagesandmethodsindicatedinthetechnicalsheets,theproductpackagingandinthismanual.OnlythencanEdiltecoguaranteetheresultsandperformanceclaimed.
· In case of highly trafficked situations protect the Politerm® screed appropriately.· It is essential that you contact our Engineering Department when considering any application different from that described in
our technical data sheets and our manuals.

APPLICATION:lightweightthermalinsulatingscreed,madeusingPoliterm®Blubeads,suppliedinbagsof500Land/or200Llaidbyskilledinstallersusingthe base layer method for beneath self-levelling screed: that is to say it is suitable for the next base-scre-ed application of self-levelling mortar.
INTENDED USE:groundbearingfloorslabsonadequatelycompactedhardcore/sub-baseflatroofingwithorwithoutfallsabaseforunderfloorheatingsystems(wi,thorwithoutpanels)voidfilling,intermediatefloorsoncorrugatedsteelsheetingetc.
FOR USE BENEATH SELF LEVELLING SCREEDS:1. Thespecificcharacteristics(verylowwaterabsorption)ofPoliterm®Blubasemortars,whencorrectlymixedandinstalledas
perthemanufacturer’sinstructions,maketheuseofawaterprooflayerbetweenthePoliterm®Bluandtheselflevellingscreedunnecessary.
2. WhenPoliterm®BluistobeplaceddirectlyonthegroundorinsituationswheredampconditionsmayoccurbeneaththePoli-term®Bluscreeditwillbenecessarytoinstalladampproofmembrane(dpm).Incertaincircumstancesitmaybenecessarytoincorporateavapourcontrollayer(VCL)betweenthePoliterm®Blubaseandtheself-levellingscreed.
3. Incaseofparticularstaticsituationsuchasroofs,itisnecessarytoinstallaseparatinglayerbetweenthebasemadebyPoli-term®Bluandselflevellingscreed.
4. Thethicknessoftheselflevellingscreed,placedoverthePoliterm®Bluscreed,shouldbeinaccordancewiththerecommenda-tionsofthemanufacturersoftheself-levellingscreed.
FOR USE BENEATH UNDERFLOOR HEATING SYSTEMS:1. Thespecificcharacteristics(very lowwaterabsorption)ofPoliterm®Blubasemortars,whencorrectlymixedand installed
asperthemanufacturer’sinstructions,makestheuseofawaterproofinglayerbetweenthePoliterm®Bluandtheunderfloorheating system unnecessary.
2. Installationofufhpipingsysteminrigidinsulationpanels:followtheinstallationinstructionsofthesupplierofthethermalheating system.
3. Installationofufhpipingsystemwithoutpanel:usingthethermalperformancecharacteristicsofthePoliterm®BluinsulatingbaselayeritispossibletocalculateaPoliterm®basethicknessthatavoidstheneedforadditionalrigidinsulationboards.Inthiscaseitisnecessarytoinstallgalvanizedsheets,joinedtogetherontopofthePoliterm®Blubaseonwhichitispossibletofixtheufhpiping.

INTENDED USE:flatroofsandnon-traffickedterraces(withorwithoutfalls),coveringcorrugatedroofingsheetsetc...
MINIMUM THICKNESS ON ABSORBENT SURFACES: 50 mm.For thicknesses less than 50 mm proceed as follows:· Thicknessesbetween30mmand50mmonwellconsolidatedsurfacese.g.:withelectricalconduitand/orpipessecurelyhaun-chedwithcementmortar:thelesserthicknessmaybeconsideredacceptable.

MINIMUM THICKNESS ON ABSORBENT SURFACES: 50 mm.For thicknesses less than 50 mm proceed as follows:· Thicknessesbetween30mmand50mmonwellconsolidatedsurfaces(e.g.:withelectricalconduitand/orpipessecurelyhau-nchedwithcementmortar):thelesserthicknessmaybeconsideredacceptable.
· Forthicknessesbetween10mmand30mm:addtothemixofcementandPoliterm®Bluabout200kg/m³ofaggregatewithamaximumgrainsizeof0,6mm(mixedmanually)andincludeanelectro-weldedmetalmesh(2mmwirediameter).
When creating falls, the minimum thickness must not be less than 50 mm.

For mixture with sand (density greater than 350 kg/m3), add 400 gr of additive each 50 kg of aggregate.
In case of laying surfaces composed of floors, cls castings, loose stone foundations, etc.. the application of the base screed prepared with Politerm® Blu doesn’t require the insertion of a galvanized mesh into the casting. In case of laying surfaces composed of insulating sheets, waterproofing synthetic layers, ceramic floors, linoleum floors, pvc, wood, moquette, corrugated sheets, etc.. before to laying of the base screed prepared with Politerm® Blu, it is necessary to lay the galvanized sheets (minimum size: wire ø 2 mm – diameter 50 x 50 mm), tied together and well-distanced from the laying surface.

Usingthismethodtheencapsulationcanbedonewithoutusingthetraditionalhazardous,expensiveandcomplexwashingopera-tion,aswellasthescrapingandfixingofcracksandcrazing.Furthermore,usingthePoliterm®Bluencapsulationsystemthereisnoneedtoremove,cutordrilltheasbestosfibrecementboardsthusavoidingthecreationofhazardousdust.
INTENDED USE:pitchedroofsandshelters.
MINIMUM LAYER: 50 mm thickness above the top of the asbestos fibre cement corrugated sheet roof profile.The average thickness obtained will be approximately 80 mm depending on the corrugation profile.

It isessentialandalegalrequirementtocheckregulationsinforcebeforestartinganyencapsulation.ItwillalsobenecessarybeforestartingencapsulationtostabilisethesurfaceoftheasbestosfibresmentboardsusinagacoatingofmodifiedlatexcalledEdilstikF.C.Aappliedusingalowpressurespray.TheEdilstikF.C.Atobedilutedincleanwater(1partEdilstikF.C.A.to2partscleanwater).
Before the laying the Politerm® Blu screed, it is necessary to place sheets of galvanized mesh (min dimension of the cable diam. 2 mm, mesh dimension 50 x 50 mm), appropriately tied and spaced from the roof surface. This system makes the cast screed monolithic and assists the installer when working on sloping roofs.
Before apply the waterproof finish, it is necessary to prepare the surface using one of the two following methods:a. Abrade the surface using an electric sander fitted with an abrasive disk and dust extraction; alternativelyb. Melt the surface polystyrene beads polystyrene beads, using an LPG roofing gas torch.Neither method to be employed until 7 days after the screed has been laid.

MEASURING THE MOISTURE CONTENT OF LIGHTWEIGHT SCREEDS MADE USING POLITERM® BLU
Inordertoestablishthemoisturecontentofthescreeditwillbenecessarytomeasuretheamountofwaterpresentinaselectedsample.ThemethodemployedistheHOECHSTsystem.Thismethodisbasedontheuseofacalciumcarbidehygrometeronsite.Beforeproceedingwiththemeasurements, it isnecessaryto identifytheareasfromwheretotakesamples.Foreachsampletakenitisnecessarytonotethemeansoftakingthesample(thetypeofinstrumentsusedandthequantityofmaterialtaken)plusanyotherkindofinformationsuchasdatethesamplewastaken,theenvironmentalconditions,temperatureandhumidity.Bycarefullynotingalltheseconditions, itallowsapropercomparisonbetweendifferenttestsconductedatdifferenttimesbydifferentoperators.TheHoechstsystemformeasuringofmoisturecontentusesacalciumcarbidehygrometer,generallysoldasakit,comprising:abottleshapedcontainerwithabuiltingaspressuregauge,aboxwithvialsofcalciumcarbide,steelpulverisingballs,asetofpreci-siontestingscalesforweighingthesampleandotheraccessoriessuchasabrushtocleanthecontainerandchiselsforbreakingoutthesamplefromthescreedsurface.Theprocessissimple:measurethepressureexertedbythegasdevelopedbythereactionbetweencalciumcarbideandthewatercontainedinthesample.Accordingtoaparticularchemicalreactioncalciumcarbide(CaC2)andwaterproduceacertainamountofacetylene(C2H2)whiledevelopingacertainpressuremeasuredbythepressuregaugeinthetopofthecontainer.Basedonthepressureexertedandtheweightofthematerialitispossibletocalculatethepercentageofmoisturecontainedinthesample.Thetooliseasytouseandthemeasurementsobtainedareconsideredreliable.However,themostcriticalissueisthatthesamplingiscarriedoutcarefully.Thesamplescreedmaterialmustbetakenandfinelycrushedusingthemortarsupplied.Thesampleisthenweighedusingtestingscalessupplied,andtheninsertedintothebottletogetherwiththepulverisingsteelballsandthevialofcalciumcarbide.Shakingthecontainer,closedwiththecappressuregauge,thesteelballsbreaktheampouleofcalciumcarbide.Thenthereactionstartswhichendsatthemomentwhenonereadsaconstantpressureonthepressuregauge(usuallyafterabouttenminutes).Becausethereactionoccursinaclosedenvironment,asmoregasisformed,thehigherbecomesthepressurewhichismeasuredwiththepressuregauge.Thereactionofcalciumcarbideincontactwithwaterproducesanexplosivemixtureofair/acetyleneinsidethecylinder.There-fore,allpossiblesourcesofignitionshouldberemovedbeforeemptyingthecylinder.Ifpossiblethecylindershouldbeopenedoutdoors.Theinstrumentusedformeasuringthetemperatureandrelativehumidityoftheenvironmentatthetimeofsamplingandtestingisapsychometricbulb.Theinstrumentmustbeplaced,laidflat,intheareawhereyouwanttodeterminetheafore-mentionedparameters.Thepanatthebasemustbefilledwithdistilledwaterwhichhastobeincontactwithoneofthetwother-mometers(viaasockmadeofabsorbentmaterial).Byreadingthethermometerdryandthenreadingthewetthermometerthedifferencebetweenthetwomeasurementscanbeusedtoobtainavaluefromwhich,usinganappropriategraduatedscalecanbedeterminedtherelativehumidityoftheair.

Moisturecontentmeasuredusingthecarbidemethodisvalidonlyifyouareusingaproductmadeexclusivelywithvirginpoly-styrenebeads(whichisthecaseforPoliterm®BluandIsolcap,init’svarioustypes).Conductingthistestonscreedsmadeusinggroundorrecycledpolystyrenegranules,makesthemeasurementunreliablesincewaterremainsinsidegranulesofthemilledpolystyrene,therebydistortingthefinalmeasure.Ifyouapplyotherscreeds(sandandcement,self-leveling,etc...)ontopofthebasepreparedfromPoliterm®BluorPoliterm®BluFein,orabasescreedmadeusingaproductfromthelightweightpremixedIsol-caprangethemeasurementisperformedatthepartbeingthetwomaterialsdifferentincompositionandcharacteristics.

In case of crawl space subbase, concreting, honeycomb... the laying of the screed made with Politerm® Blu, may be done without interpose on the casting a galvanized mesh. In case that the subbase is made by insulating sheets, bituminous and/or synthetic waterproofing mats, ceramic or linoleum pavements, pvc, wood, moquette, corrugated sheet etc. before the laying of the screed made with Politerm® Blu, it is necessary proceeding installing sheets of galvanized mesh (minimum dimension: wire diam. 2 mm, mesh 50 x 50 mm) properly connected and spaced from the subbase.

DOSES FOR 1 m³ YIELD OF LIGHTWEIGHT THERMAL INSULATING MORTAR:
ORDER OF INTRODUCTION INTO THE TRUCK MIXER - MIXING AT FULL SPEED:1. Water:asmuchasrequiredforthemix,lessabout20-30litres(seepoint7). NOTE: water-cementratio0,4:0,5accordingtothe
cementcharacteristics;2. Politerm® Blu Ready Mix - Politerm® Blu Fein Ready Mix;3. Mixforabout10minutesattopspeed;4. Cement;5. Sand(ifapplicable);6. Mixforabout10minutesattopspeed;7. Cleantheloadingbowlwithabout20-30litresofwater(thuscompletingdosageofthemixingwater);8. Dependingontheresidualmoistureinthesand,addwater.
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS:· Ifthetruckmixerhasavolumetriccapacityof10m³,preparetheloadfor9m³.· Duringthetripfromthebatchingplanttositethetruckmixerhastorunatmaintenancespeed.Onceonsite,andafterpossibly
addingwater,thelengthoftimespentmixinginthetruckmixeris1minuteforeachm3 of mixture.· Theambienttemperaturecanaffecttheyield.Insummerthisisnotaproblembutinwinterthemixingwatertemperaturemay
dropcloseto“zero”.Itisthereforerecommendedtoincreasethemixingtimeinthetruckmixerby5-8minutesafteraddingsome cement.
· Attemperaturesbelow+5°C,itisrecommendedtoaddliquidantifreezetothedosagesrecommendedbythemanufacturer.Anyantifreezeadditivesthatmaybeusedmustbecompatiblewiththephysical‐chemicalpropertiesofPoliterm®Blu.Thecon-tractorshouldhoweverevaluatethecostsandbenefitsofusingantifreezeadditivesonacasebycasebasis.
· BeforestartingtopumpthemortarmadewithPoliterm®BluReadyMix,itisimportantinitiallytopumpjustwaterorgroutwa-ter/cement,inordertowettheentirepipesection.Then,beforebeginningtopumpthemortarmadewithPoliterm®BluReadyMix,introducethesponge“tubecleaner”.Thislastactionpreventsthepossiblewashingoutofthebeads,causedbystandingwaterinthepipes,andsoavoidsthepossibleformationofplugs.Forcorrectpumping,normallydoneusingpistonpumps,pourthemortarmadewithPoliterm®BluReadyMixintothepumphopperandstartpumpingslowly,untilthemortarflowsoutfromthepumptube.Thencontinuepumpingatthedesiredspeed.
· Checktheamountofresidualmoistureinthesandsoasnottoaddtoomuchwatertothemix.· Ifusingdifferentmixingdevice,pleasecontacttheEdiltecoTechnicalDepartment· Forcorrectoperationandoptimalpumping,itisrecommendedtoruntestswithquantitiesnotlessthan5m³atatime.

ADVICE FOR THE WASHING OF CONCRETE MIXER: · DischargetheleftovermaterialintocontainerswhichallowthewatertorunoffandthenrecoverthePoliterm®BluReadyMix
beadsandtheaggregate,whichcanthenonlybeusedforoversiteconcrete.· UsingsandinthepreparationofmortarmadewithPoliterm®BluReadyMix,reduceswastageofbeads,butDOESNOTmeanthat
youcandoawaywiththeabovementionedwashingphases.Thefollowingrulemustalsoberespected.
OBLIGATIONS:Whenthetruckmixerhasbeenwashedoutinthisway,thenextmixmustonlybeusedforoversiteconcreteandNOTforpouringindustrialflooring.
SPECIFIC EQUIPMENT (see appendix 3. “Equipments and spare parts”):Ediltecosuggestsusingequipmentspecificallydesignedforbatchingplants,forpreparationandpumpingoflightweightthermalinsulatingmortarspreparedwithPoliterm®BluReadyMix.Usingthisspecificequipmentspeedsuptheloading,preparationandworkingtimeandguaranteesaconstantexcellentresultfromthefinishedproduct.
