    Teaching and Learning

    Every module has at least one primary lecturer and one second lecturer who

    is the quality controller.

    1. Primary lecturer

    The Primary lecturer is responsible for:

    working through the study material thoroughly and making sure thathe/she understands everything and is familiar with the content.

    sending errata to students should there be any errata in the study

    material. For online modules the errata is posted immediately.

    writing an evaluation report which is to be used at the next revision ofstudy material. This will consist of the list of errata, as well as anyother remarks or insights that might influence the next revision.

    communicating with their quality controller regarding tutorial letters,

    assignments, evaluation exercises, examination papers and revision ofstudy material.

    consultation with their quality controller and establishing a timetable toensure that everything is finished timeously. This must be recorded in

    written form and a copy submitted to the COD. Timeously should be

    agreed upon by the primary lecturer and their quality controller at thebeginning of the year. As a guideline it is suggested that the quality

    controller must have between 3 and 5 working days for the evaluationof tutorial letters and examination papers.

    drawing up tutorial letters communicating all module information tothe students. For online modules communication is direct.

    setting assignments, evaluation exercises, examination papers and

    working out the solutions.

    marking assignments and examination scripts.

    handling all enquiries on module content. They should be reachable byphone on off-campus work days to answer student enquiries if at all

    possible.

    module development if scheduled. Any changes to the curriculum ornew ideas must be approved by the Departmental Tuition Committee

    before it can be implemented.

    making all study material (study guide and tutorial letters) available

    electronically on myUnisa.

    answering general queries on Quantitative Management/OperationsResearch as subject for a degree. Queries about possible exemptions

    based on studies elsewhere must be referred to a member of theDepartmental Exemption Committee.

    scheduling tasks so that they can be completed well before due dates.Important due dates: the last day to hand in examination papers,

    marked scripts and marks, and Tutorial Letter 101 for the following

    year.

    The Primary lecturer may not change existing content without

    permission from the Departmental Tuition Committee.

    Discussion classes will be presented by tutors.

    2. Information to be communicated to students in tutorialletters and on myUnisa

    General information such as lecturer names, contact details, study

    material, prescribed books, structure of module etc.

    Errata of any mistakes found in study material.

    Assignments, evaluation exercises and their solutions.

    Examination hints/guidelines.

    3. Tutorial Letters

    Tutorial letters are numbered in the following way:

    o 100-series contains general information, assignments, evaluation

    exercises and due dates.

    o 200-series contains the solutions to assignments and is only

    dispatched on a certain date.

    o 300-series contains information to all students in the

    Department.

    o 000-series contains information to be sent to students by theDepartment directly and not by the Department of Despatch.

    Numbers in a series must follow sequentially, such as 101, 102, and103. You cannot for example have 104 following 102.

    The primary lecturer should write out the tutorial letter, type it or haveit typed by the Admin Personnel.

    The primary lecturer should proofread the document thoroughly and

    see that all corrections are made.

    For modules presented in both English and Afrikaans: when the onelanguage is finished, the primary lecturer should translate it or have it

    translated by a language editor.

    The primary lecturer should type the second language or have it typed

    by admin personnel.

    The primary lecturer should have all study material checked by alanguage editor.

    Throughout this process the quality controller should be consulted.

    Print the Quality Control form from Voorblad, complete it if necessary

    and ask the quality controller to sign it.

    Use blue covering dockets (one for each language if necessary) fortutorial letters, for one page tutorial letters use the small blue dockets.

    The pink dockets are only for study guides.

    Convert the tutorial letter to PDF format (or ask admin personnel to do

    this on their behalf).

    Leave the blue docket and tutorial letter with the DepartmentalSecretary for signing by a member of the Management Committee.

    Upload the tutorial letter to myUnisa and create a zip file with the pdffile and the tex file and upload the zip file to the archive on Voorblad

    (or ask the admin personnel to do this on their behalf).

    The tutorial letter should be sent to Planning and Coordination at least

    six weeks before it is to be sent to the students.

    4. Examination papers

    Remember that security is important - DO NOT leave theexamination paper on your table or on the hard disk of yourcomputer. Remove it every day onto a removable disk and lock itaway. Remember also to delete it from the Recycle Bin.

    The Primary lecturer is responsible for:

    setting the examination paper and work out the detailed solutions.

    ensuring that the questions are fair and on standard.

    ensuring the answers are correct. ensuring the duration of the exam is sufficient. A lecturer should take

    about 45-50 minutes to complete a two-hour paper.

    typing the examination paper or having it typed.

    proofreading the exam thoroughly and ensuring that all corrections aremade.

    consulting the second examiner (quality controller) throughout thisprocess.

    ensuring that the quality controller has at least 5 working days toevaluate the examination papers.

    ensuring that the quality controller provides an alternative question

    together with the solution when they (the quality controller) wants todiscard an entire question.

    translation of the exam paper (either themselves or by a languageexpert) when the one language is finished if that module is presented

    in both languages.

    having the examination paper checked by a language expert.

    ensuring (together with the quality controller) that the papers are

    correct and on standard. Final responsibility lies with the primarylecturer.

    shredding all non-final copies.

    completing the Quality Control form and printing the examinationcovering forms, and asking second examiner to sign them.

    taking the examination paper and the SAQA document (filed in thedepartmental archives) to the external examiner for their approval

    signature on the examination covering form for third-level andpostgraduate modules.

    giving the exam paper, solution and covering docket to the

    Departmental Secretary who will arrange for a member of theManagement Committee to sign the covering docket.

    arranging for backup of the electronic exam paper file with AdminPersonnel.

    DO NOT PUT THE PAPER ONTO myUnisa.

    5. Examination scripts

    After scripts have been marked, ask Admin Personnel to capture the

    marks on the XMO system. Consult with second examiner on standard of marking and any

    adjustments if necessary.

    Second examiner must remark all scripts with marks (?)40-49 and 70-

    74.

    Scripts must be signed by markers.

    Unless permission is granted by COD, no person other than the first

    and second examiners may mark scripts.

    Third-level and postgraduate modules have an external examiner whomust approve the standard of marking and make any adjustment if

    necessary. The primary lecturer is responsible for getting the externalexaminers report signed.

    Finalise the marks and ask Admin Personnel to capture final marks on

    the XMO system. Hand in a copy of the examination paper and memorandum to

    Departmental Secretary for re-mark purposes.

    All scripts must be returned as soon as possible to the examination

    department.
