SUCCESS STORYBEKAPOLE In the late Seventies, BEKA was

approached by the authorities inNamibia to find a solution to thecorrosion which was damaging thethen conventional materials used forlighting poles, like steel, wood andconcrete.

Namibia is not only one of theworld’s most atmospherically corrosive environments, but it alsohas large tracts of land with highly corrosive soils.

The resulting research into non-corrosivematerials has culminated in thechoice of the glassfibre reinforcedpolyester (GRP) pole. This materialexceeded the expectations of theauthorities, as it not only offered theanswer to the excessive corrosion, but also offered convincing strengthproperties combined with an appealingfinish and design.

BEKA subsequently bought theexpertise and machinery for themanufacture of filament wound GRPpoles from a leading German manufacturer and, since commencement of production in July1978, has manufactured several hundreds of thousands of GRP polesfor the African subcontinent andbeyond.

BEKA has perfected the process byadopting the latest technology. In 1989 BEKA became the firstmanufacturer to be awarded theISO 9002 accreditation for itsquality management of its pole and luminaire manufacturing plant.BEKA’s production is constantly subjected to the stringent qualitydemands which this accreditationimplies.

Through its commitment to consistentquality, BEKA has become one ofthe world’s leading manufacturersof GRP poles. BEKA’s GRP polesare used for highways, main roads,

residential streets, sportsfields, decorative lighting, area lighting,post-top lighting, perimeter security, parks and gardens, as well as forflag poles.

The BEKAPOLE, as it became known,is used not only for its resistanceto corrosion, but is preferred by architects, developers and localauthorities for its aesthetic appearance, strength, ease of installation and inherent safety forroad users.

“Fibreglass poles whip around inthe wind...”Due to the unique process of glassfilament winding, standard BEKAfibreglass poles are designed to withstanda wind pressure of 500 Pa on a projectedluminaire area of 0.20m2. Some of ourmost satisfied customers are situated incoastal environments subjected to highwinds. All BEKA fibreglass poles aredesigned and manufactured with a safetyfactor of 2,5.

“Fibreglass poles aredeteriorated by sunlight...”The ultraviolet rays in sunlight willdeteriorate only unprotected fibreglass. This has been eliminated by pigmentingthe resin and the application of a polyestergel coat with UV inhibitors to the surfaceof the pole structure.

“Fibreglass poles cannotsupport big headloads...”Each BEKA fibreglass pole is individuallyengineered by factoring in the weight, projected area and windloadingrequirements of the installation site. The mostdemanding installation is easily achieved bya pre-engineered BEKA fibreglass pole.

“Fibreglass poles are made out ofplastic...”BEKA fibreglass poles are manufacturedby the filament winding process wherecontinuous glass rovings are fed through apolyester resin bath and wound at an eventension onto a rotating mandrel, resultingin a mass glass to resin ratio of 70:30,making full use of the tensile strength of theglass filament which is more than that ofsteel.

APPLICATIONS MANUFACTURING

A mechanised system ofmanufacturing, utilising atrack mounted windingmachine onto which both theglass filament rovings andresin bath are mounted, isapplied.

The filament winding machineis operated at calculatedspeeds whilst movingalongside the rotatingmandrels to achievemaximum winding angles.

BEKA fibreglass poles aremanufactured through thefilament winding processwhereby continuous glassrovings are fed through apolyester resin bath andwound at an even tensiononto a rotating mandrel, resulting in a mass to resinratio of 70:30 and makingfull use of the tensile strengthof the glass filament which ismore than that of steel.

After the winding processhas been completed, theglass filament structure iscured and then removedfrom the mandrel for surfacepreparation.

A base coat of polyesterresin that complies with therequirements of SANS 1749is applied, thereafter thecured structure is furthermachined to receive a finalgel coat that is applied to auniform thickness of between250 and 500 microns.

In the mechanical assemblyprocess, the pole ismachined to provide holesfor baseplate hookbolts, cable entries, access dooropenings, as well as anyother details required. Spigotarrangements and surfacebaseplates, where required, are moulded into the poleand secured in position withlocking screws.

Throughout the manufacturingprocess, the pole is subjectedto stringent quality checksand tests.

HIGHWAYS

The BEKAPOLE has virtuallyunlimited applications. It can be manufactured to anyrequirement relating to the number and configuration ofluminaires to be mounted, inclusive of any special colour.
