Polar bears and penguins
Alice looked out her window and saw some penguins and polar bears having a luau in her front yard. She saw 12
animals altogether. She counted a total of 40 legs.
How many penguins were in Alice’s yard?
Step 1: Underline the important information.

were in Alice’s yard?

were in Alice’s yard?
Step 2: Draw ____ animal bodies.
Step 3: Each animal has at least ____ legs. Draw ____ legs on each body.
Step 4: Count how many legs you have so far.
Step 5: Draw ____ more legs on each animal until you have a total of ____
legs.
Step 6: In order to find out how many penguins there are, count how many
animals have ____ legs.
Step 1: Decide what characters you will be using in your problem. Make sure to choose two animals that have a different number of legs.
Step 2: Decide how many animals you would like there to be. For example, I chose for there to be a total of 12 polar bears and penguins.
Step 3: Split the number of animals or objects up. For example, I decided that I wanted 8 polar bears and 4 penguins.
Step 4: Multiply each number by how many legs that animal has.
Step 5: Add the number of legs together.
Now you can write the problem.
• Tell what kind of animals you are looking at.
• Tell how many total animals. (Don’t split them apart or you will give the answer.)
• Tell total number of legs.
• Ask how many of one type of animal. This is a question so it should end in a question mark.
What to turn in.
• You will turn in 3 note cards.• The first on will have your problem written
in cursive on it. (skip lines) • The second will have the answer to your
problem. • The third will have a color picture of your
two animals. (Not all of them, just one of each.)
• Put your name on all three cards.
