  • Pokmon-e Cards: Pokmon-e cards are a new series of Pokmoncards that have electronic codes (Dot Codes) printed on them. Dot Codes are read usingthe e-Reader expansion cartridge available for the Game Boy Advance. Each DotCode contains Pokdex information for that cards Pokmon, as well as extra features, such as animated movies or mini-games. Pokmon-e cards are fully compatible withall Pokmon TCG expansions. You dont need the e-Reader to play the Pokmontrading card game using Pokmon-e cards. The e-Reader just tells you interestingfacts or lets you play video games. The rules for Pokmon-e cards are the sameas the rules for the original Pokmon TCG.

Another Way to WinYou already know that you win if you take all of your Prizes or if your opponent hasno Benched Pokmon to replace his or her Active Pokmon if it gets Knocked Out orotherwise removed from play. You also win if your opponents deck is out of cards atthe beginning of his or her turn.

Using Pok-PowersSome Pokmon have special Pok-Powers. They can use these powers when theyre yourActive Pokmon or even when theyre on your Bench. Many of these powers can be usedbefore you attackso you get to use a power and still attack! Each Pok-Power isdifferent, though, so you should read carefully to see how each power works.

Evolving a Stage 1 Pokmon to Stage 2A Stage 1 Pokmon evolves to Stage 2 the same way that a Basic Pokmon evolves toStage 1. You play a Stage 2 Pokmon in your hand on top of the matching Stage 1Pokmon in play (either your Active Pokmon or one of your Benched ones).Remember that the evolving Pokmon keeps all cards attached to it (Energy cards,Evolution cards, and so on) and any damage it might already have, but the old attacksand Pokmon Powers of the Pokmon it evolved from go away. You cant evolve a Pokmon that you just evolved that turn (so you cant evolve aBasic Pokmon to Stage 1 and then evolve it again to Stage 2 that same turn). Andyou cant evolve a Basic Pokmon directly to Stage 2. It has to evolve to Stage 1 first!

Do You Already Know How to Play the PokmonTrading Card Game?If you dont, the Pokmon Starter Set has all the basic rules you need to learnto play. You should know the things in the Starter Set rules before you read thisAdvanced Rulebook. If you havent played the Pokmon trading card game before, but you have played other trading card games, you might be able to figure outeverything from this rulebook. But if trading card games are new to you, youll want to look at the Starter Set rules first. This rulebook covers the new rules that youll need for cards not in the Starter Set on pp. 25. Then this rulebook has a Complete Rules Reference section after the Advanced Rules. (There are also a few rules that come up very rarely, covered in a section called Expert Rules.)

Advanced RulesWhats New in the Pokmon-e: Aquapolis Expansion?New Burn attack and Burned Special Condition: FirePokmon get a boost with the new special attack Burn. If a Pokmon is Burned, placea Burn marker on it to show that its Burned. A Pokmon stays Burned until somethingremoves the burned condition (for example, retreating or evolving the Burned Pokmon). As long as its still Burned, flip a coin after each players turn. If tails, place 2 damagecounters on it, ignoring Weakness and Resistance. Two new types of Trainer cardsSupporter cards andTechnical Machine cards: You can play only 1 Supporter card each turn.Whenyou play a Supporter card, put it next to your Active Pokmon. When your turn ends, discard the Supporter card whether you used it or not. A Technical Machine card isattached to 1 of your Pokmon in play. That Pokmon may use the Technical Machinecards attack instead of its own. As with a Supporter card, you must discard a TechnicalMachine card at the end of your turn whether you used it or not.Expanded Pokmon Powers: Some Pokmon have special Pokmon Powers.Pokmon Powers are now divided into two categories: Pok-Powers and Pok-Bodies.Pok-Powers are once-per-turn powers that you must choose to use. A Pok-Body isactivated as soon as the card is in play. Each Pokmon Power is different, though, soyou should read carefully to see how each power works. In addition, all Special Conditions(not just Asleep, Confused, and Paralyzed) turn off Pok-Powers. So if your Pokmon hasa Special Condition on it, you cant use its Pok-Power until you remove the SpecialCondition.

  • Weakness and ResistanceSome Pokmon have a Weakness or Resistance to certain other types of Pokmon. (For example, Charmander has a Weakness to oW Pokmon.) A Defending Pokmon takes double damage from a Pokmon that it has a Weakness to, and it takes 30 less damage from a Pokmon that it has Resistance to. Thats all there is to it!

Order of What You Do in an AttackUsually, an attack wont depend on the order in which you do things, but if it does, then this is how youll figure it out! First, you pay any costs (discarding Energy cards, for example) before seeing what the attack does. Then damage comes before any othereffects. Also, you need to figure out any Weakness before other effects that might changethe amount of damage.

Special ConditionsSome attacks make the Defending Pokmon Asleep, Burned, Confused, Paralyzed, orPoisoned. These conditions (Asleep, Burned, Confused, Paralyzed, and Poisoned) are calledSpecial Conditions. Special Conditions dont happen to a Benched Pokmon, only toan Active Pokmonin fact, if a Pokmon goes to the Bench, these things are removedfrom it! Evolving a Pokmon also means that its no longer affected by a SpecialCondition. Also, anything else thats the result of an attack (besides damagedamagecounters stay!) goes away if the Pokmon goes to the Bench or evolves (for example, the results of Sandshrews Sand-attack go away).AsleepIf a Pokmon is Asleep, it cant attack or retreat. As soon as a Pokmon is Asleep, turnit sideways to show that its Asleep. After each players turn, flip a coin. On heads, thePokmon wakes up (turn the card back right-side up), but on tails its still Asleep, andyou have to wait until after the next turn to try to wake it up again. You may flipto awaken a Pokmon right after the turn it becomes Asleep.BurnedIf a Pokmon is Burned, place a Burn marker on it to show that its Burned. As longas its still Burned, flip a coin after each players turn. If tails, place 2 damage counterson it, ignoring Weakness and Resistance. If an attack would burn a Pokmon thatsalready Burned, it doesnt get doubly Burned. Instead, the new Burn condition replacesthe old one. Make sure whatever you use for a Burn marker looks different from adamage counter.

    5

ConfusedIf a Pokmon is Confused, you have to flip a coin whenever you try to attack withthat Pokmon or whenever you try to make it retreat. Turn a Confused Pokmon withits head pointed toward you to show that its Confused. When you try to have a Confused Pokmon retreat, you first have to pay the RetreatCost by discarding Energy cards from the Pokmon. Then flip a coin. On heads, youretreat the Pokmon normally. On tails, the retreat fails, and that Pokmon cant tryto retreat again that turn. When you attack with a Confused Pokmon, you flip a coin. On heads, the attack worksnormally, but on tails your Pokmon attacks itself with an attack that does 20 damage.(If your Pokmon has Weakness or Resistance to its own type, or if theres some othereffect that would alter the attack, apply these things as usual.)

On tails, the Active Pokmon does 20 damage to itself even if its attack normally doesnt do damage (like Squirtles Withdraw attack).

ParalyzedIf a Pokmon is Paralyzed, it cant attack or retreat. Turn the Pokmon sideways to show that its Paralyzed. If an Active Pokmon is Paralyzed, it recovers after its players next turn. Turn the card right-side up again.

What this means is that if your Pokmon get Paralyzed,it will be out of action on your next turn, and then it will be okay again.

PoisonedIf a Pokmon is Poisoned, put a Poison marker on it to show that its Poisoned. As long as its still Poisoned, place a damage counter on it after each players turn, ignoring Weakness and Resistance. If an attack would poison a Pokmon thats already Poisoned, it doesnt get doubly Poisoned. Instead, the new Poison conditionreplaces the old one. Make sure whatever you use for a Poison marker looks differentfrom a damage counter.

  • How Special Conditions Work TogetherIf a Pokmon is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed, and a new attack is made against it that makes it Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed, the old condition is erased and only the new one counts. But these three conditions are the only attackeffects that erase each other. So, for example, a Pokmon can be Confused and Burnedat the same time!

After Each Players TurnSometimes there are things to do after your turn is over but before your opponentsturn starts. After each players turn, if either players Active Pokmon is Poisoned, itlltake damage. If its Burned, it might take damage. And if its Asleep or Paralyzed, itmight recover. Then the next players turn starts.

Complete Rules ReferenceWhat Do You Need to Play?Well, you and your opponent each need your own deck of 60 cards, a coin to flip, andsome counters to mark damage to your Pokmon. You can use pennies or whatever elseyou want if you run out of counters.

Whats the Pokmon Game Like? You and your opponent are Pokmon trainers, battling it out to see whos the greatestPokmon trainer of all time! You and your deck of cards (those are your Pokmon andthe abilities you have as a trainer) will fight against your opponent and his or herdeck.Youll have one Pokmon, called your Active Pokmon, fighting for you. You can haveother Pokmon waiting behind the Active Pokmon on your Bench. If your ActivePokmon loses the fight by getting Knocked Out, then you pick one of those Pokmonon your Bench to be your new Active Pokmon.

Object of the GameYou win if you Knock Out 6 of your opponents Pokmon. You keep track of this withPrize cards that you put aside at the start of the game. Each time you Knock Out oneof your opponents Pokmon, you take one of your own Prizes (not your opponents!)and put it into your hand. You win when you take your last Prize (this shows youve Knocked Out 6 Pokmon).

    76

You also win if your opponents deck is out of cards at the beginning of his orher turn.

You also win if your opponent has no Pokmon on the Bench to replace his orher Active Pokmon, and his or her Active Pokmon gets Knocked Out. Thatmeans theres no one for your Pokmon to fight against, so you win!

Starting the Game Flip a coin to decide who goes first. You can use your special Pokmon coin, if you

have one. Shuffle your deck and draw a starting hand of 7 cards. Put the rest of your deck

face down in front of you. You and your opponent each choose a Basic Pokmon card from your hands and

put them face down. These will be your starting Active Pokmon. Each player may, if he or she wishes,

choose up to 5 Basic Pokmon cardsfrom his or her hand and put themface down on his or her Bench (this iswhere Pokmon wait when theyre notthe Active Pokmon).

After each player has put down his orher Basic Pokmon, put the top 6 cardsof your deck face down in front of you. These are your Prizes, which you takewhen your opponents Pokmon areKnocked Out. You cant look at a Prizecard until you take it.

Flip over all of the Active and Benched Pokmon that have been put on the table.

During the game, youll be putting more and more cards on thetable. All the cards on the table that are in the Active Pokmonarea or on the Bench are considered in play. Your deck, yourPrizes, and the cards in your discard pile are not considered in play.

What If I Dont Have aBasic Pokmon Card in

My Hand? Then show your hand to your opponent, shuffle it back into your deck, and draw7 new cards. Your opponent can thenchoose to draw up to 2 extra cards. Ifyou still dont have any Basic Pokmoncards in your new hand, you repeat thisprocess, but your opponent gets to drawup to 2 extra cards each time!

    300_96405_001_E2/Rulebook.qxd 2/13/03 4:19 PM Page 6

  • Pokmon cards, Evolution cards, and Energy cards will be on the tablein playafter you play them from your hand. You can keep using those cards in play turn after turn. Trainer cards, though, are used once and then discarded.

DRAW a card. You always begin your turn by drawing a card. (If your deck is empty at the beginning of your turn so you cant draw a card, the game is over, and youropponent wins.)

Now DO ANY of these you want in whatever order you want: PUT Basic Pokmon cards on the Bench (as many as you want).Choose a Basic Pokmon card from your hand and put it face up on your Bench. You can have no more than 5 Pokmon on your Bench at any time, so you canput a new Basic Pokmon card there only if your Bench has 4 or fewer Pokmonon it. If your Active Pokmon gets Knocked Out (or leaves play for any other reason),you have to replace it with a Pokmon from your Bench right away (or you losethe game).

EVOLVE Pokmon (as many as you want). If you have a card in your hand that says Evolves from so-and-so and so-and-so is the name of a Pokmon you already have in play, you may play thatcard in your hand on top of the Pokmon so-and-so. This is called evolving a Pokmon.

Example: Jayne has a card called Charmeleon that says Evolves from Charmander, and she has a Charmander card in play. She may play the Charmeleon card on top of the Charmander card.

When a Pokmon evolves, it keeps all cards attached to it (Energy cards,Evolution cards, and so on) and any damage it might already have, but the old attacks and Pokmon Powers of the Pokmon it evolved from go away. All otherthings about the Pokmon go awaySpecial Conditions (Sleep, Burn, Confusion,Paralysis, Poison) or anything else that might be the result of an attack some Pokmon made earlier.

Sorry, you cant evolve a Pokmon that you just played or evolved on that turn. Also, neither player can evolve a Pokmonon the first turn. And finally, yes, you can evolve a Pokmon onyour Benchthat counts as in play!

    2

1Lets Play!As you play, you and your opponent take turns. During your opponents turn, you dontdo anything except replace your Active Pokmon if it gets Knocked Out (see below).During your turn, go through the steps below.

What Can You Do during Your Turn?

You can do lots of things during your turn! You always draw a card first, and you always attack last. Heres everything you can do:

    DRAW a card.

Now DO ANY of these you want in whatever order you want: PUT Basic Pokmon cards on the Bench (as many as you want). EVOLVE Pokmon (as many as you want). ATTACH 1 Energy to 1 of your Pokmon (only once per turn). PLAY Trainer cards (as many as you want). RETREAT your Active Pokmon (as many times as you want). USE Pok-Powers (as many as you want).ATTACK!

CHECK to make sure you have enough Energy attached to yourActive Pokmon to attack.

CHECK Weakness and Resistance of your opponents Pokmon. PLACE damage counters on your opponents Pokmon. CHECK to see if you Knocked Out your opponents Pokmon. TAKE a Prize (if you Knocked Out your opponents Pokmon).Your turn is OVER now.4

  • ATTACH 1 Energy to 1 of your Pokmon(only once per turn).

Take an Energy card from your hand andattach it to one of your Pokmon in play, eitheryour Active Pokmon or one of your Benchedones, but NOT both (put it under the Pokmoncard).

PLAY Trainer cards (as many as you want). When you want to play a Trainer card, do what it says, then put it in the discardpile. RETREAT your Active Pokmon (as many times as you want). If your Active Pokmon has lots of damage counters on it, you might want to retreatit and bring in one of the Pokmon on your Bench to fight instead. But on mostturns, you probably wont retreat. To retreat your Active Pokmon, you must discard 1 Energy attached to it for eachoC listed for its Retreat Cost. If there arent any oC for its Retreat Cost, it retreatsfor free. (Youll read more about costs in the ATTACK! section.) Then you can switchit with a Pokmon from your Bench. Keep damage counters, Evolution cards, andEnergy cards (other than the ones you had to discard) with the 2 Pokmon whenthey switch.A Pokmon that is Asleep or Paralyzed cant retreat. A Confused Pokmon can try toretreat, but it might not succeed. (Why this might happen will be explained later onin the rules.)When your Active Pokmon goes to your Bench (whether it retreated or got theresome other way), some things about it do go awaySpecial Conditions (Sleep, Burn,Confusion, Paralysis, and Poison) and anything else other than damage that might bethe result of an attack some Pokmon made earlier.

If you retreat, you can still attack that turn with the new Active Pokmon. USE Pok-Powers (as many as you want). Some Pokmon have special Pok-Powers that they can use when theyre in play. (Remember, Benched Pokmon are in play, too, so they can use Pok-Powers, if they have any.) Many of these Powers can be used before you attack. Each Pok-Power is different, though, so you should read carefully to see how eachpower works.

A Pok-Power isnt the same as a Pokmons attack, so if youuse the Pok-Power, you can still attack!

ATTACK!When you attack, you place damage counters on your opponents Active Pokmon (also called the Defending Pokmon). This is the last thing you can doduring your turnyou cant do anything else afterward. You are allowed to attackonly once during your turn (if your Pokmon has 2 attacks, it can use only 1 ofthem each turn). Say the name of the attack youre using, and then follow the restof the steps below!

CHECK to make sure you have enough Energy attached to your ActivePokmon to attack.

You can use an attack only if you have at least the required amount of Energyattached to your Active Pokmon.

The required amount is written to the left of the attack name.

Any kind of EnergyoG, oR, oW, oL, oP, oF, oC, oD, or oMcan count towardColorless Energy requirements (oC). But for the other eight kinds of Energy, onlyEnergy of the appropriate kind counts toward Energy requirements of that kind. Forexample, you can use an attack with oR oR oC next to it only if that Pokmon hasat least 3 Energy attached to it, at least 2 of which are oR Energy.

    3

    1312

Unlike most of the other things youcan do during your turn, you may dothis only once during your turn. Also, remember that you can attach anEnergy card to a Pokmon on yourBench. After all, thats in play, too!

    300_96405_001_E2/Rulebook.qxd 2/13/03 4:19 PM Page 12

  • CHECK to see if your Pokmon Knocked Out your opponents Pokmon. If a Pokmon ever has total damage at least equal to its Hit Points (for example, 4or more damage counters on a Pokmon with 40 HP), its immediately Knocked Out. TAKE a Prize (if you Knocked Out your opponents Pokmon).Whenever you Knock Out your opponents Pokmon, your opponent puts its BasicPokmon card and all cards attached to it (Evolution cards, Energy cards, and so on)in his or her discard pile. You then choose one of your Prizes (you do this even ifyour opponent Knocked Out his or her own Pokmon!) and put it into your hand. After that, your opponent must replace his or her Active Pokmon with a Pokmonfrom his or her Bench. (If your opponent cant do this because his or her Bench isempty, you win!) If your Active Pokmon and your opponents Active Pokmon areKnocked Out at the same time, the player whose turn it is replaces his or her Pokmon last. The player whose turn it is chooses his or her Prize last as well.

Your turn is OVER now.Sometimes there are things to do after your turn is over but before your opponents turn begins. After you do those things, your opponents turn begins.

    4

    14 15

Tackle does 10 damage to the Defending Pokmon.

Ponytas first attack is called Tackle.

Ponyta needs to have 1 oC Energy attached to use this attack.

CHECK Weakness and Resistance of your opponents Pokmon. Some Pokmon have Weakness or Resistance to Pokmon of certain other types.(For example, Chikorita has Weakness to oR Pokmon.) Look to see if the Defend-ing Pokmon has Weakness or Resistance to the attacking Pokmons type. ADefending Pokmon takes double damage from a Pokmon that it has Weaknessto, and it takes 30 less damage from a Pokmon that it has Resistance to. So howdo you do damage in the first place?

PLACE damage counters on your opponents Pokmon. When you attack, place 1 damage counter on your opponents Active Pokmon foreach 10 damage your Pokmons attack does (written to the right of the attackname). If an attack says to do something, be sure to do that, too!

You have to have the required amount of Energy attached to aPokmon to use its attack, but you dont have to discard thosecards to attack. The cards stay attached to your Pokmon unlessthe attack says otherwise!

Usually the attack doesnt depend on the order you do thisin, but if it does, then this is how you figure it out! First, you pay any costs (discarding Energy cards, for example) beforeseeing what the attack does. Then damage comes before any other effects. Also, Weakness is applied before other thingsthat might change the amount of damage.

    300_96405_001_E2/Rulebook.qxd 2/13/03 4:19 PM Page 14

  • ParalyzedIf a Pokmon is Paralyzed, it cant attack or retreat. Turn the Pokmon sideways toshow its Paralyzed. If an Active Pokmon is Paralyzed, it recovers after its players nextturn. Turn the card right-side up again.PoisonedIf a Pokmon is Poisoned, place a Poison marker on it to show that its Poisoned. Aslong as its still Poisoned, place a damage counter on it after each players turn, ignoringWeakness and Resistance. If an attack would poison a Pokmon thats already Poisoned,it doesnt get doubly Poisoned. Instead, the new Poison condition replaces the old one.

Can Your Pokmon Be Asleep and Confused at theSame Time?If a Pokmon is Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed, and a new attack against it causes it to become Asleep, Confused, or Paralyzed, the old condition is erased and only the new one counts. But these three conditions are the only attack effectsthat erase each other. For example, a Pokmon can be Confused and Burned at thesame time.

Okay!Youve read the Advanced Rules, so now you know enough tohandle almost anything that might come up in a Pokmon

game. Once you master all of these rules, you can take a look at the Expert Rules on p. 19 to fine-tune your Pokmon knowledge.

Why Are There So Many Different Cards? One of the things that makes the Pokmon game different from other card gamesis that its a trading card game. This means that there are lots of different cards thatyou can collect and trade with your friends. Also, you arent limited to just playing thepreconstructed decks you buyyou can use all the different cards you have to createtotally new decks! A lot of the fun of a trading card game comes from making differentdecks that use different strategies.

What Happens after Each Players Turn? After each players turn, if either players Active Pokmon is Poisoned, it takes damage. If its Burned, it might take damage. And if its Asleep or Paralyzed, it might recover. Then the next players turn begins.

How Do Special Conditions Work? Some attacks cause the Defending Pokmon to be Asleep, Burned, Confused, Paralyzed,or Poisoned. These conditions are called Special Conditions. They dont happen to aBenched Pokmon, only to an Active Pokmonin fact, if a Pokmon goes to the Bench,Special Conditions are removed from it. And evolving a Pokmon also means its nolonger affected by a Special Condition.AsleepIf a Pokmon is Asleep, it cant attack or retreat. As soon as a Pokmon is Asleep, turn it sideways to show that its Asleep. After each players turn, flip a coin. Onheads, the Pokmon wakes up (turn the card back right-side up), but on tails its stillAsleep, and you have to wait until after the next turn to try to wake it up again.BurnedIf a Pokmon is Burned, place a Burn marker on it to show that its Burned. Make sure whatever you use for a Burn marker looks different from adamage counter.ConfusedIf a Pokmon is Confused, you have to flip a coin whenever you try to attack with itor whenever you try to make it retreat. Turn a Confused Pokmon with its head pointedtoward you to show its Confused. When you try to make a Confused Pokmon retreat, you first have to pay the RetreatCost by discarding Energy cards. Then flip a coin. On heads, you retreat the Pokmonnormally. On tails, the retreat fails, and that Pokmon cant try to retreat again thatturn.

  • Expert RulesThis section answers some questions that dont come up very oftenbut if they do,youll be glad to have the answers!

What Counts as an Attack?Anything written on a Basic Pokmon or Evolution card under the picture where attacksare (except for a Pokmon Power) is considered an attack. And an attack is alwaysconsidered to be against the Defending Pokmon, even if it doesnt do anything to thatPokmon. So, for example, Marills Defense and Sunkerns Growth are attacks against theDefending Pokmon and would be prevented by an effect like Spinaraks Scary Face.

In What Order Do You Do Your Attack? The exact steps to go through when attacking are listed here. For most attacks, it wontmatter what order you do things in, but if you have to work your way through a reallycomplicated attack, follow these steps in order and you should be fine.a) If the Defending Pokmon is a Baby Pokmon, flip a coin to see if your turn ends without an attack. (If your turn ends without an attack, dont do any of the other steps. Youre done now.)b) Announce which attack your Active Pokmon is using. Make sure your Pokmon has enough Energy cards attached to it to use the attack.c) If necessary, make any choices the attack requires you to make. (For example,Natus Telekinesis attack says Choose 1 of your opponents Pokmon. So you choose now.)d) If necessary, do anything the attack requires you to do in order to use it. (For example, discard Energy cards, as in Flaaffys Discharge attack, which makes you discard all oL Energy cards attached to Flaaffy in order to use it.)e) If necessary, apply any effects that might alter or cancel the attack. (For example,if your Pokmon was hit last turn by Lv. 35 Quilavas Smokescreen attack, and you wantto attack with that Pokmon during your next turn, you should flip a coin. If tails, yourPokmons attack does nothing.)f) If your Active Pokmon is Confused, check now to see if the attack fails.g) Do whatever the attack says. Do any damage first, then do any other effects, and, finally, Knock Out any Pokmon that have damage greater than or equal to their Hit Points.

How Do You Make a New Deck?

To make a new deck, first notice that all the cards other than the Trainers have differentEnergy types on them. Your deck should probably include one or two of the basic Energytypes, and you can choose to add some Colorless (oC) Pokmon if you like. If you choosejust one Energy type, you will always have the right kind of Energy for your Pokmon butnot as much variety. If you have several Energy types, youll have more Pokmon to choosefrom, but youll run the risk of sometimes not drawing the right type of Energy for yourPokmon. And be sure your deck has enough Energy cards (most decks need 20 to 25).Once you choose your Energy types, pick Pokmon and Trainer cards that work welltogether. Do you want to build up big Pokmon to crush your opponent? Then put ina lot of Evolution cards and some Trainer cards, like New Pokdex, that help you findthose Evolution cards. Do you want to do a lot of damage to your opponents Pokmonvery quickly? Then pick Pokmon that dont need to be evolved and cards, like BaseSet 2 PlusPower, that do extra damage. After you make your deck, play it as often as you can against as many other decks asyou can. See what works and what doesnt, and then make changes. If you keep workingat it, youll have a deck that will show everyone youre the greatest Pokmon Masterof all time!

    18 19

Your deck has to have exactly 60 cards, and you cant have more than 4 of anyone card other than basic Energy cards in your deck (the basic Energy cards areoG, oR, oW, oL, oP, and oF). A card counts as the same as another card if it hasthe same nameit doesnt matter whether the cards have different art or come fromdifferent sets. So, for example, you could have 4 Mistys Staryu and 4 Staryu in your deck, but you cant have more than 4 Pokmon named Staryu total even if they were differentversions of Staryu.

  • How Do You Figure Out the Damage?Usually the amount of damage an attack does wont depend on the order in which youdo things. But if you have to figure out an attack in which a lot of different thingsmight change the damage, follow these steps in order (skip any steps that dont applyto that attack).a) Start with the base damage. This is the number written to the right of the attack,or, if that number has an x, , +, or ? sign next to it, its the amount of damage theattack text tells you to do.b) Apply any effects the Active Pokmon has that affect the base damage dealt (for example, Base Set 2 Scythers Swords Dance). Then if the base damage is 0 (or if the attack doesnt do any damage at all), just stop figuring the damage. Youre done now. Otherwise, keep going.c) Double the damage if the Defending Pokmon has Weakness to the attacking Pokmons type.d) Subtract 30 damage if the Defending Pokmon has Resistance to the attacking Pokmons type.e) Figure out damage effects of Trainer cards (like Base Set 2 PlusPower) and Darkness Energy cards on the attacking Pokmon.f) Figure out damage effects of Trainer cards and Energy cards on the Defending Pokmon (like Base Set 2 Defender or Metal Energy).g) Apply any relevant effects resulting from the Defending Pokmons last attack (like Base Set 2 Onixs Harden) or any relevant Pokmon Powers.h) For each 10 damage the attack ends up doing, place 1 damage counter on the Defending Pokmon. (If at this point the damage done turns out to be less than 0, dont do anything.)i) Now that damage has been done, if the attack does anything other than damage,do all of that.In What Order Do Things Happen after Each Players Turn?Usually it doesnt matter in what order you do things after each players turn, but ifthings get complicated, follow these steps in order.a) Place damage counters on any Poisoned Pokmon.b) Flip to see if Burned Pokmon take damage.

    c) Flip to see if Asleep Pokmon recover, and have Paralyzed Pokmon recover.d) Flip to see if Pokmon with Char counters get damage counters placed on them.e) Place damage counters on any Pokmon with oD Energy attached to them (exceptfor oD Pokmon and ones with Dark in their names). If a Pokmon has a Pokmon Tool card attached to it and that card does somethingbetween turns, that card can be used at any time between turns that the person whoplayed the Pokmon wants. If your Pokmon and your opponents Pokmon are Knocked Out at the same timebetween turns or during an attack, the player who is about to take a turn replaces hisor her Pokmon first (and chooses his or her Prize first as well).

Pokmon that Refer to ThemselvesSometimes a Pokmon refers to itself by name. For example, Aipoms Pilfer attack saysShuffle Aipom and all cards attached to it into your deck. Read the name as thisPokmon if the attack somehow gets used by another Pokmon. So if Togetic copiesAipoms Pilfer with Super Metronome, Togetic would get shuffled into its players deck, just as if Togetic said Shuffle this Pokmon and all cards attached to it into your deckon it.

Illegal EvolutionsWhenever you evolve a Pokmon, the Evolution card has to say it Evolves from thename of the Pokmon it goes on top of (unless youre using Base Set 2 PokmonBreeder, which specifically lets you get around this rule). So if, for example, your ActivePokmon is Togetic, and the Defending Pokmon is the Magikarp from the TeamRocket expansion, you cant use Togetics Super Metronome to copy Magikarps RapidEvolution attack and evolve Togetic into Gyarados.

How Do You Retreat Using Double Energy Cards?Paying Retreat Costs can get confusing with Double Energy cards. Heres the way itworks: Discard Energy cards one at a time until youve paid the Retreat Cost (or maybemore). Once youve paid the cost, you cant discard any more cards. For example, supposeyour Pokmon has a Retreat Cost of oC oC and it has two oW Energy cards and aoC oC Energy card attached. You can pay the Retreat Cost in several waysbydiscarding oC oC, by discarding 2 oW, or by discarding oW first and then oC oC. Youcant discard all 3 cards, though.

  • What Happens if a Card Tells You to Draw More Cardsthan You Have Left?If a card tells you to do something to a certain number of the top cards of your deck, and you have fewer cards than that left in your deck, do whatever youre supposed todo to the cards that you have left and continue play as normal. For example, if a cardtells you to draw 7 cards or to look at the top 5 cards of your deck, and you haveonly 3 cards left in your deck, you draw the top 3 or look at the top 3. Remember, you lose if you cant draw a card at the beginning of your turn, not if you cant drawone because a card told you to.

What Happens if Neither Player Gets a Basic PokmonCard in His or Her First 7 Cards?Sometimes neither you nor your opponent get any Basic Pokmon cards in your firsthands of 7 cards. If this happens, both players shuffle and draw 7 new cards. In thiscase, neither player gets to draw the extra 2 cards. Repeat this process until at leastone of the players has a Basic Pokmon card in his or her hand of 7 cards. If theother player still doesnt have a Basic Pokmon card in his or her hand, that playercan shuffle and draw 7 new cards, but the player who already has a Basic Pokmoncard can draw up to 2 extra cards as usual. Continue this process until each playerhas a Basic Pokmon card in his or her hand of 7 cards.

What Happens if Both Players Win at the Same Time? You win if you take your last Prize or if your opponent has no Benched Pokmon toreplace his or her Active Pokmon if it gets Knocked Out or otherwise removed fromplay. But it might happen that both players win in one of these ways at the sametime. If this happens, play Sudden Death. But if you win in both ways and your opponentwins in only one way, you win!

Whats Sudden Death? If Sudden Death occurs, play a new Pokmon game, but have each player use only1 Prize instead of the usual 6. Except for the number of Prizes, treat the Sudden Deathgame like a whole new Pokmon game: Set everything up again, including flippinga coin to see who goes first. The winner of this game is the overall winner. It mayhappen that the Sudden Death game also ends in Sudden Death; if that happens, justkeep playing Sudden Death games until somebody wins.
