HAVE YOU “LIKED” OUR RACE PAGE YET????

“A TRIP TO COLORADO”By: Kirsten Garcia, ESL Teacher

My parents have been taking me and my brother to Powderhorn since I was nine years old. Now that I am older, my husband, my son, my parents and I all drive the 900 miles to the quiet Ski Resort in South Western Colorado. We spend one week on the mountain in our Goldenwoods cabin.

This year, we were there December 26th, 2015 to January 2nd, 2016. Most days my father and I ski on the mountain, while my husband rides his snowboard. The most exciting thing about his year is that Benjamin was able to ride on the ski lift to get to the top of a small mountain. With the help of myself, my husband and my father, he was able to ski down the smallest hills. Sometimes we would let him ski down alone and one of us would catch him, and sometime he rode between our legs. It was great exercise for all of us and Ben couldn’t help but laugh as he slid down the mountain. When we were not enjoying the snow on the mountain, we enjoyed the snow near our cabin by building a very small snow man. Ben was so proud of our snowman that he could not stop smiling. He and his daddy even made snow angels.

Sometimes when we get restless, we make the one hour drive down to the city of Grand Junction. Sometimes we shop at the mall, eat at the local restaurants, or even watch a movie. This year we made a trip down to town to see Star Wars Episode 8: The Force Awakens for the second time.

This family trip is something that I look forward to every year. I have so much fun with my parents and I love to have special time with my son, and husband. If you are interested in going skiing in Colorado, Powderhorn is the best ski resort for people who do not like crowds.

Dear Mrs. Han, I made it. Thank you sooooo much for all of your effort to teach us. You are not only teaching us, you give your heart to us. God bless you!

Poison Control Phone NumberPoison control call centers are staffed by medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and pharmacists who are specially trained to assist in poisoning emergencies. Keep the number handy in case of an emergency. The National Capital Poison Center can be reached from anywhere in the U.S. by calling 1-800-222-1222. This number automatically connects callers to their local poison control center based on the area code and origination phone number, and it is available for free 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When calling the poison control center, it is vital to have enough information available for the specialist to provide proper advice. Callers should have the following:

1. The victim’s age and weight, both of which can affect how quickly poisons operate.2. The precise item ingested – refer to the bottles label for the exact name and ingredients.3. An approximation of the amount of poison ingested.4. How long ago the poison was ingested.5. The condition of the victim – groggy, hyperactive, nauseous, etc.6. How the victim was exposed – ingestion, vapors, skin contact, etc.7. Any medical concerns, such as allergies or medication the victim is taking, that could interfere with the poison or

treatment.8. Remain calm and provide the specialist with as much information as possible, including a callback number in case the call is disconnected.

Our condolences to Norm Chavez and his family whose father passed on January 18, 2016. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families. “Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy”.

CONDOLENCES

IT’S A GIRL! Harper Lynn Rader was born on December 3, 2015 to Sgt. Jason and Ariel Rader at Ft. Hood, Texas, son of Vickie Burch.

She weighed in at 3 lbs. 14 ounces and 17 inches long and arrived at 31 weeks gestation.

With the Grace of God, Harper was able to breath on her own and had no medical issues other than her small size and weight.

She was able to leave the NICU at Darnell Medical Center Ft. Hood after 5 weeks weighing a healthy 5 pounds.

Ironically, Harper was born exactly 1 year to the day after her great-grandfather Anthony Zywczak passed away at the age of 83.

Although Grandma Vickie saw her for the first time the day after Harper was born, she was not able to hold her because of Harper’s delicate condition.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY RACE staff celebrated their annual Christmas dinner party at El Cholo’s in Whittier on Friday, December 4, 2015. It was a night to remember with lots of laughs, drinks, food and the annual gift exchange. During the annual gift exchange a staff member each year is selected to take care of the “Hat”. The “Hat” was introduced in 1998 by Lourdes Rodriguez. The first grateful recipient was Rocky Bettar. The recipient of the “Hat” is considered honored to be in the company of the chosen few who have been guardians of the “Hat”.

10 WAYS TO PREPARE FOR EL NIÑO RAINS THIS SEASON

Hanna Conchas, daughter of Jessica Marin participated in a dance competition on Sunday, February 14th in Long Beach. Hanna has been dancing with Fine Arts Academy of Dance since the young age of 2 ½ years old. Her main focus is in ballet but also dances in tap, jazz and contemporary styles of dance. This competition Hanna competed as a soloist in a Variation La Bayadere piece as Gamzatti. Hanna placed a High First and was very satisfied with her results. Her next competition will take place in March 2016.

This year Marieanne Han, ESL Teacher was chosen.

NO STAGE FRIGHT!

If El Niño rainfall predictions are correct, this fall and winter could be the answer to drought-relief prayers. As with everything in life, however, be careful what you wish for. While there is a chance precipitation will be only moderate, there is also the possibility of powerful, drenching rainstorms that can quickly create trouble on many fronts. It’s time to get your head in the game. Preparing your house, your yard, your car and your insurance — now — can be the best hedge against an unpredictable season. Here are some tasks to consider to better position yourself against whatever challenges El Niño throws your way.

1. Fix your leaks before it rains: The recent dry heat may have caused wood structures to shrink and to open up expansion joints, possibly creating leak points. Call your roofer to check for trouble spots and repair any old leaks. Most roof leaks occur at metal flashing connection points, so make sure the flashing is free of debris. Use your hose to make sure the flashing is directing water off the roof and into the gutters.

2. Clean out your gutters and downspouts.

3. Invest in a generator: If you are in a neighborhood susceptible to power outages, consider buying a portable generator or even a permanent standby generator that immediately kicks in if the power goes out.

4. Install a sump pump: With enough rain, groundwater can invade below-grade spaces such as basements and garages even with good drainage systems in place. If you already have a sump pump, have your plumber service it.

5. Paint the exterior wood trim of your home: Cracks in paint can carry water directly into the wood and promote dry rot and termite invasion.

6. Examine your window glazing compound: The persistent hot, dry weather may have caused the glazing compound to shrink and pull away from the glass panes. Loosened panes can allow rain penetration. Check and recaulk as needed.

7. Check balcony and deck slopes: Make sure water flows away from the walls and into the drainage system.

8. Do a preemptive strike on any potential ant invasion: If wet weather in the past has sent ants or other bugs scurrying into your house, now is the time to bring in an exterminator.

9. Store emergency repair materials (sandbags, heavy plastic sheeting) in a safe dry place.

10. Prepare now: Experts agree that the toughest time to find solutions to rain-related issues is during a rainstorm.
