Lake Como Italy Facts and Details

Lake Como is a glacier lake and the temperature is typically too cold for swimming. However, a number of the resorts across the lake have floating pools together with their hotel for guests to savor. You will see that the lake has a sort of inverted Y shape with two legs extending out of a central promontory, known as Bellagio – or the “pearl of Europe”.

The town of Bellagio is certainly worth a visit, with its narrow alleys and magnificent historic Roman arches, old patrician villas and luxurious hotels.

Discover scenic Lake Como in Italy's beautiful lake area on a typical day trip tour from Milan. Intimate Como Lake, is only 50 km from the heart of Milan and is the "must" destination to visit. If you eventually visit Milan and you have every day or two, do not skip this top romantic travel destination and an excellent location for photography.

My excursion for the lake has started from Milan railway station Cadorna (also a Milan red line train station). The popular lakeside city of Como is really just a brief drive from Milan, and is surrounded by majestic mountains. After dining in Como and spending some time shopping, you can go on a two-hour panoramic cruise ride to the stunning village of Bellagio and still make it back in time for an evening dinner in Milan.

The beautiful area around Lake Como is perfect for any type of traveler, no matter what sort of holiday they're after. Gwen Stefani's music-video " Neat " was recorded in Villa Erba right on the banks of Lake Como and other spots around the lake.

Where to Stay in Lake Como, Italy

Inexpensive holiday vacation rentals can save you a lot of money. You can buy food from the local market - locally produced vegetables, as opposed to plastic store variety. And you are able to cook up your own delicious dishes in place of needing to eat out at the same kind of buffet each night in the hotel. Then again you can always eat out at inexpensive tourist -resort restaurants. Italy guests planing a trip to/from Tuscany to Sicily, Milan, Venice, Rome, Naples, Lake Como and other principal Italian cities, towns and neighborhoods have many “Trattorias” and “Pizzerias” or family-run locales with excellent food quality at rock-bottom prices.

The Beautiful Architecture Hailing from Lake Como

The Villa D’Este built in 1567 is an example of a wonderful villa with unobstructed lake views from the leading veranda, and many magnificent views from each room/suite. Between its development and its conversion in to a hotel in 1873, Villa d’Este (composed of the Cardinal’s building and the Queen’s Pavilion) includes many colourful paintings, frescoes and important sculptures inside and outside the hotel.

Don’t Miss Other Important Lake Como Villas

Lake Como and the nearby region is known for many beautiful villas and gardens. Built in 1568 as an exclusive residence for Primary Tolomeo Gallio, Villa Balbianello considered one of many finest samples of architecture and gardening. It is here that several episodes of Star Wars were recorded. The Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo has some of the most beautiful gardens found anywhere in northern Italy. Lake Como is also home for some of the best golfing in Europe.

Lake Como is Very Popular among Writers and Artists

For literary buffs and bibliophiles, Lake Como has discovered itself highlighted in much good literature, from Mark Twain to Dostoevsky. And even if great authors weren’t featuring it in their textbooks, many of them were singing the praises of this Italian lake to others. In 1818 Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote that “This Lake exceeds anything I ever seen. It's narrow and long, and gets the look of a great river winding among the foothills and the forests.”

Lake Como Vacation Packages

Lake Como Italy vacation packages are a great way to see the region as well, as they can support the price of flights, hotels, and other transportation options all bundled into one price. For instance, you can get a direct flight to Milan Malpensa Airport and then arrange for private pickup in a limousine to Como, Italy. Many times, admission is included into preferred Como Italy attractions, such as the Villa Carlotta and other well-known historic structures and gardens.

Visiting Many of the Beautiful Towns Sprinkled Along the Lake

From Como, it is only a brief drive to Cernobbio, whose old-town features a delightful collection of beautiful houses and narrow alleys. This is the site of the fictional Villa Baglianello, the stylish family-property-cum-pensione featured in the film Monthly by the River. Nearby is one of the grandest hotels in Europe, the five-star Villa D'Este, (already mentioned above) whose bedrooms are virtually like public galleries and whose grounds feature a wonderful "floating swimming-pool" (it actually rests atop the lake). Up the road is Toriggia, where you can visit Villa Passalacqua, a late-18th-century house where Vincenzo Bellini, the famous opera composer, once slept.

Next to the pristine streets, the other most memorable portion of my vacation to Lake Como was the hospitality of its people. Individuals were overwhelmingly pleasant, in three or four languages. These were generous and patient and kind and created a homely, comfy feel for everyone in our group. Some of the towns make you go back to the 18th century and keeps their “aristocratic” experience.

A Conclusion…

The stunning Italian lake area, long-time favorite haunt of the rich and famous, is an ideal destination for tourists travelling to Northern Italy. Town cobblestone streets add to the historic ambiance of Italian architecture. Almost all buildings in this area haved witnessed mankind since Roman times.

Another fun thing you can do is to study pasta making with a skilled chef in a private cooking class at the stunning Villa Mirabella on the banks of Lake Como. You will study with a culinary master and get hands-on training. Then when you’re ready to try local specialities you can visit Cuisine Il Gatto Nero – a fine example of a restaurant near Cernobbio that was made famous by Mr. Clooney. Fantastic views and good food having a wonderful team who make sure you have a fabulous time.
