India’s exports jumped by 11.15% in September compared to same month last year to USD 27.64 billion while imports dropped by 18.10% compared to same month last year to USD 34.43 in the same month. Imports dropped due to steep drop in Crude Oil and Gold import, resulting in trade deficit of USD 6.7 billion in September which is the lowest in last 30 months. Trade deficit in the first half of the current fiscal stood at USD 80.12 billion which was lower than the USD 91.81 billion recorded in the same period last fiscal year.

Imports of gold and silver dropped by more than 82% to USD 0.8 billion in September from USD 4.6 billion in the same month last year. Oil imports were also declined by about 5.94% to USD 13.19 billion as well. Government has recently taken some measures to hike import duties on gold, silver and platinum and restricted import of LCD televisions which are the main reasons behind dropping imports.

Poverty ratio in the country has declined to 21.9% in 2011-12 from 37.2% in 2004-05 due to increase in per capita consumption, as per the Planning Commission report published today. The percentage of persons below poverty line in 2011-12 has been estimated at 25.7% in rural areas, 13.7% in urban areas and 21.9% for the country as a whole compared to 41.8%, 25.7% and 37.2% respectively in 2004-05.

RBI has reduced the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) for each bank from 1% of the total deposits to 0.5%. RBI has also asked banks to maintain higher average CRR (cash reserve ratio) of 99% of the requirement on daily basis as against earlier 70%.
