Despite our reliance on technology to communicate in modern life, being able to write clearly is a definite skill that needs to be developed in children. In line with the current English syllabus, we aim for all children at the end of Stage 2 to be able to: • Recognise that effective handwriting and presentation of work is required in order to communicate effectively for a range of audiences. • write using NSW Foundation Style cursive, as appropriate, and explore joins that facilitate fluency and legibility. • recognise that legibility requires consistent size, slope and spacing • write using clearly-formed joined letters, and develop increased fluency and automaticity. An excellent example of this outcome is the following recent work samples from Year 5 students who have only just completed their Stage 2 learning. SCHOOL UNIFORM REVIEW . According to the Department of Education (DOE) it is a requirement of all schools to review how they implement the DOE Uniform policy on a three year cycle. To meet this requirement the school executive and the P & C Uni- form Committee will be meeting on 22 March 2019 to review current prac- tices and to ensure that the school meets the required guidelines. In addi- tion to this, the meeting will also discuss the possibility of introducing house coloured t-shirts for “in-school” sporting activities. In next week’s newsletter there will be a parental survey whilst in school, we will also survey staff and stu- dents about their preferences regarding the uniform. The results from these surveys will also be discussed at the proposed meeting on 22 March 2019.

Thought of the Week

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS At PCPS we recognise the importance of the students being able to write legibly. Despite our reliance on technology to communicate in modern life, being able to write clearly is a definite skill that needs to be developed in children. In line with the current English syllabus, we aim for all children at the end of Stage 2 to be able to:• Recognise that effective handwriting and presentation of work is

• recognise that legibility requires consistent size, slope and spacing• write using clearly-formed joined letters, and develop increased

fluency and automaticity. An excellent example of this outcome is the following recent work samples from Year 5 students who have only just completed their Stage 2 learning.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE Our school will be participating in the National Day of Action against Bullying on Friday, 15 March 2019. Throughout Term 1 and the remainder of 2019, our school will provide opportunities for the staff, students and community to reflect on what bullying is and on what we can do to help minimise and ultimately, prevent bullying from taking place. Bullying is defined as an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psy-chological harm. It can involve an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening. Bullying can happen in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeat-ed, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying NEWTOWN HIGH SCHOOL OF THE PERFORMING ARTS - AUDITIONS Students currently in Year 6 or Year 10, 2019 enrolled in public or non-government schools who are seeking entrance into Year 7 or Year 11 in 2020 at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, must participate in audi-tion workshops in Dance, Drama or Music. Auditions will be held between Monday 24 June and Thursday 4 July 2019. To be eligible to apply, candidates must be Australian Citizens or holders of a visa granting permanent resident status in Australia on the day of their audition. To register for an audition, please complete the online application form located on our website www.nhspa.nsw.edu.au STAGE 3 CANBERRA EXCURSIONThe Stage 3 excursion format is changing. This year all of Stage 3 are attending the Canberra Excursion. Next year all Stage 3 will attend a Sport and Rec Camp. The Canberra excursion is one of the greatest experiences that all students can have in primary school. There are so many interesting things to see and do in the nation’s capital city. From personal experience, I thoroughly recommend that all students attend this fantastic trip. Many of the exhibits visited will enhance the learning that the students are completing in class this year and it will definitely make the learning more relevant to them. The cost this year is $410 per student with a $70 deposit required by 28 March. Payments can be made in instalments. Families who requires financial assistance should contact the front office.

SUBJECT CONTRIBUTIONS - REPEATAll families should have received correspondence from their Stage leaders regarding the SUBJECT CONTRIBU-TIONS for 2019. The subject contributions cover only part of the cost of providing many of our digital platforms that children are using both in class and at home. The school covers the remaining costs from our funding.

For K-2 students the SUBJECT CONTRIBUTION includes:Matific / Reading Eggs and Typing Tournament access for $30

For 3-6 students the SUBJECT CONTRIBUTION includes:Matific / School Magazine subscription / Typing Tournament and Cars & Stars access for $45. All students will be invoiced individually for these payments.

KINDERGARTEN - CANTEENDue to some safety issues regarding Kindergarten students, ES1 staff, together with the canteen, have made some changes regarding students going to the canteen during recess and lunch breaks. All students in Kindergarten who wish to buy items from the canteen at recess will be escorted by a staff member to the canteen 5 minutes before the bell, at 10:50am. If your child has a canteen order for recess they will collect this during this time. No Kindergarten students will be able to leave the bottom playground to buy canteen items during recess. If students wish to purchase additional items at lunch time, such as iceblocks, slushies, etc they will need to be pre-ordered in the morning. Lunch orders will continue as normal. The canteen staff will place these labelled items into a basket or insulated bag and a staff member on duty will collect these from the can-teen after students have eaten their lunch to hand out. No Kindergarten children will be able to leave the bottom playground during the lunch break to buy items from the canteen. This will be in place from Week 5, 25th February. We are hoping this will only be necessary during the remain-der of Term 1, but will be reviewed for Term 2.Thanking you for your understanding and consideration in this matter.
