Pilot makes emergency landingoff Beachlands during test fl ight

The experienced American pilot of a light amphib-ian plane, and his passenger, were forced to make an emergency landing in the sea off Pine Harbour Marina, Beachlands last Saturday morning after a mechanical malfunction.

Last week in this column I said there were no restric-tions on dogs running off leash at Shelly Bay Beach, Beachlands, but the story has taken quite a few twists and turns since then.

I wrote last week on the strength of the reply to a query I made to Auckland Council via its media communica-tions team. The reply I got back said dogs could run off leash at Shelly Bay Beach at all times.

Next day I got a call from Franklin Local Board mem-ber Malcolm Bell who told me there was a 9am to 7pm ban on dogs at Shelly Bay Beach during daylight saving months.

“Nope, there isn’t,” I said, “because I’ve got an email from council to say there isn’t.”

“Yes, there is,” he said, “because I’ve got an email from council to say there is.”

We compared emails. Mine was from the council’s me-dia department. His was via someone at Animal Manage-ment and a council parks officer.

I decided Animal Management and Parks trumped council media spokesperson, so I assumed I would have

to correct the editorial this week. But wait, there’s more...Later that day, Malcolm got another email from yet

another council communications specialist – this one at-tached to the bylaws department – who said that my edi-torial was correct and that there were no restrictions on dogs and they could be off leash at Shelly Bay at all times.

It all comes back to the wording in the council’s list of restricted dog areas in South Auckland which reads: Dogs are prohibited on Shelly Bay Beach and Kiwi Es-planade from Mangere Boat Club to Shortt Ave, unless for the purpose of moving through the park and boat club and their dog is controlled on a leash

It seems half Auckland Council believes this refers to our Shelly Bay Beach, while the other half of the council believes it refers to a Shelly Bay Beach next to Mangere Boat Club.

One council parks officer, in what by now was becom-ing a very long email trail, even said it was all due to a missing comma. It should read: Shelly Bay Beach, and...

With the comma in place it would mean Shelly Bay (ours) AS WELL AS the place at Mangere.

Yeah, right. But it seems the council’s final word comes from Paul

Wilson, Principal Policy Analyst Bylaws, who says in an email: “We are sorry that there may have been a mis-

understanding in information you received from other staff and we will advise them of the differences between the two beaches with the same name and that Shelly Bay Beach in Beachlands has no restrictions so it is not speci-fied on the website.”

This is all good for a laugh, but there is a serious side. For starters it has caused a lot of unnecessary tension

between beachgoers and dog walkers at Shelly Bay as ev-eryone, not surprisingly, is confused.

Secondly it is symptomatic of a wider issue with our Su-per City: Bigger is NOT better, at least not when it comes to dealing with local problems.

The whole Shelly Bay confusion is because our area is not administered and managed by local people (I’m talk-ing staff, rather than the political side). We often deal with people who live and work on the other side of Auckland and who, quite understandably, have little idea about where anything is in our part of the world.

And thirdly, why the heck do we need an Auckland wide bylaw to administer our beaches? Surely we can look to find our own solutions to our own issues.

I understand that Local Boards will at some point get the opportunity to have a say on bylaws in their own areas so maybe that will be the opportunity to tell our Board members what we want to happen at our beaches.

Doggone it, just what the heck is going on!

Given there are only a few building compa-nies working in Spin-naker Bay, perhaps they could get together and organise a clean up day before the next rain or windy day, and more of this all ends up in the parks and water.

They should all be embarrassed.

LETTER:

Clean up needed at building sites

The Westpac Rescue helicopter airlifted a seriously injured driver to hospital following a head on collision be-tween a truck and trailer unit and a hatchback on

Brookby Road last Fri-day morning.

The accident hap-pened about 10.30am on the north side of Kimptons bridge.

The road was subse-quently closed to traf-fic for close to four hours as emergency services attended.

The truck was head-ing North on Brookby Rd and the hatchback was heading South

when the accident oc-cured.

The driver of the hatchback sustained multiple fractures and crush injuries but the driver of the truck was uninjured.

The Manukau Serious Crash Unit is investi-gating.

Constable Hollie Giv-en says it will be several weeks before a decision will be made whether

any charges will be laid.In the meantime both

vehicles are being in-spected for possible mechanical faults.

“We will be getting Auckland Transport to send out engineers to assess the width of the bridge and the qual-ity of the surface of the road as well,” says con-stable Given.

Meanwhile, the Brookby Environment

Protection Society says it is distressed by the incident as the narrow bridge was identified by the society at the recent Environment Court hearing regarding Pascoe’s Twilight Road cleanfill, with residents highlighting the risk posed to road users by heavy vehicles using the bridge.

sea conditions were very nice and I was very fortunate to be close to the marina with some resources available.”

He soon discovered the cause of the problem – an oil line had vibrated loose.

Dan left his passenger, a friend from Florida, with the aircraft while he went ashore to obtain oil from the local chandlery. While the small plane has an aircraft engine Dan says it has automotive technology allowing it to fly on unleaded automotive fuel and au-tomotive oil.

Eyewitness and Air New Zealand pilot Pete Hodgson was at the marina as the drama unfolded.

“I looked up and saw blackish smoke coming out of the back of the plane and then the engine stopped,” says Pete. ”I said to my wife Alana ‘that’s not good’.”

The plane dipped behind the marina boat masts and disappeared. When Pete and Alana arrived back at their nearby home they found the plane had made a safe landing in the shallows.

Over the next hour and a half they watched from their clifftop property as first the pilot went ashore and then locals and the Auckland Police Maritime Unit aboard the Deodar 3 arrive to of-fer assistance. Dan says he is grateful to local residents who came to his aid.

“I can’t thank the neighbours enough. I’m incredibly impressed with their friendliness and helpfulness – they are very, very kind people.”

Dan also praised the Auckland Police Maritime unit. “What a professional and courteous Police department –they

were marvellous.”Once the line was repaired and the oil refilled, Dan and his pas-

senger made a safe takeoff, waved on by their helpers. While Dan returns to Florida this weekend, his Searey will stay

in its hangar at Ardmore, awaiting its owner’s return in April. Dan says the aircraft is one of only six in New Zealand, although there are 600 worldwide. He first flew his factory certified SeaRey in Florida before having it dismantled and shipped to New Zealand.

Five burglars were caught by Police leav-ing Maraetai after a break-in at an Albacore Way property in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The 16-year-old, two 17-year-olds, an 18-year-old and a 22-year-old were all from Papakura and in-toxicated.

Beachlands Police officers Aaron Mat-

aira and Adrian Fisher were about to finish a late shift when they received a call from neighbours reporting suspicious activity at an Albacore Way address at 12.45am on Saturday.

The property own-ers also called Police at about the same time after they arrived home to find people on their property.

The officers drove down past Albacore Way and found a ve-hicle fitting the descrip-

tion driving without lights around the round-a-bout towards Clev-edon.

They found numerous items of stolen property in the silver sedan.

“When we pulled them over there were bags, wallets, cash, a laptop cannabis and various ID cards in the vehicle. We believe they have been responsible for a number of recent thefts from vehicles as well as the burglary,” says Aaron.

“We also believe they are part of some sort of youth gang - two were brother and sister, there was also a cousin and two who were part-ners.” The five were arrested and appeared in the youth court on Saturday.

Those of the group over 16 will appear in the Manukau District Court on February 26 facing charges of bur-glary and one with pos-session of cannabis.

More charges may be

pending.“It was a good result

because the neigh-bours phoned the Police promptly so we were able to get there quickly and intercept the ve-hicle before the culprits got away,” says Aaron.

teeth… How? There are 100 trillion bacteria in our mouth, some of which metabolise sugar into acid. This in turn dissolves the mineral out of our enamel by lowering the pH in our mouths. If this happens often enough and for long enough, the enam-el weakens and breaks down creating a cavity. Once bacteria enter into a tooth through a cavity, a filling is necessary. But a cavity is not always

Looking after your dental health through summerBy Clevedon Dentist,

Anthony HuntThere has been a lot

of media attention re-garding sugar lately - it seems to be in every-thing! And as it is ‘Fab-Feb month (with the aim of going sugar free for the month) I thought it fitting to discuss this from a dental perspec-tive.

For dental health it is not so much the quantity of sugar that is an issue, but rather the frequency of sugar intake. Con-stant grazing on sug-ary food and drink puts an acidic load on your

type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke and even pancreatic cancer.

Tips: Drink water.

With all this hot summer weather it is important to keep hydrated, however unless you are an elite athlete, do away with the sports drinks, as water is sufficient. It is also important to avoid constant sipping on sugary drinks (including sugar in tea and coffee). Even lemon in water, which seems healthy, can be damaging to your teeth if constantly sipped.

Snack Wisely. Avoid grazing and choose snacks that are healthy

and good for your teeth, such as cheese, vegetable sticks and nuts. Fruit is a great snack but be wary of the sugar (or acid) content of these too. Rinse with water.

Eat sweets in moderation. It is better to consume sweets and sugars in one

sitting (such as mealtimes), than throughout the day.

Eat breakfast! We all know this is the most important meal of

the day. When you miss breakfast you are likely to snack more later.

Regulary routine.Have a good home routine of brushing twice a day,

and flossing - especially before bed! Finally, keep trouble at bay by making regular visits

to your dentist or hygienist for a professional clean.

YOUR GUIDE TO HEALTH, BEAUTY & FITNESS

STAY HEALTHY, KEEP FIT, LOOK GOOD IN 2015

By Fran PardonOn the Pohutukawa

Coast we are spoilt for choice with so many op-portunities and options to help keep ourselves healthy, fit and, dare I say, looking good!

With the kids back at school and the summer holidays sadly behind us, now is the perfect time to follow through on those New Year’s resolutions most of us made back in January.

You know the ones... shed a couple of kilos (lose all that Christmas cake we ate!), tone up, take an exercise class, join a gym or maybe even train for a special event like a triathlon.

As well as being sur-rounded by beautiful beaches, easily acces-sible coastal walkways, regional parks and a for-est to mountain bike in, we also have a first class sports and recreation centre on our doorstep at Te Puru offering a di-versity of classes as well as a multi-purpose sports ground. Then there are several privately run lo-cal gyms.

From pre-school athlet-ics (let’s get them mov-ing early) and school age gymnastics, ballet and dance classes to a wonderful variety of fit-ness activities including sports aerobics, circuit training, boxing, pilates, yoga and zumba not to forget gentle exercise classes for the elderly and the Probus walking group, there is some-thing for all ages and stages of fitness close to home.

If you lack motivation, joining a class or a gym with a friend and keep-ing each other account-able is a good way to get started.

Or go one better and hire yourself a personal trainer. We have a num-ber of highly profession-al trainers who would love to help you reach your goals.

We now also have the new Energy Experience store in the Beachlands shopping centre offering a multitude of delicious

health and nutritional products as well as ad-vice.

In the hurly-burly of family life, how about taking time out just for you and schedule a regu-lar relaxing massage or facial to help destress.

Or maybe get a mani-cure, a pedicure or a new

hairstyle! So why wait - all the

opportunities are right here. They say there’s no time like the present to get started so let’s make the most of what’s on offer in our own com-munity!

Now is great time to start looking after ourselves for a better quality of life

“There are even Mas-ters categories for the over 45s, who can have a scaled down ver-sion of the workout so they are not compet-ing directly against the young.”

Auckland Crossfit Games.

Perform Crossfit has been formed as an off-shoot of the Perform Fitness gym based at the Formosa sports cen-tre near Beachlands.

A CrossFit area – or “Box’ as it is called – has been constructed across half of one of the indoor tennis courts.

There are currently seven CrossFit ses-sions a week with

more on the way and four CrossFit trainers.Alex is one. The oth-ers are Perform Fitness owner Jack Holmes, along with Broni Lud-lam and Colin Walker.

Alex (29) and wife Laura arrived in New Zealand from England in February last year, Alex had been doing CrossFit in England for

about three years prior, and is now Perform Fit-ness’ most experienced CrossFit trainer.

“I came over here to teach CrossFit. This year I will be focus-sing on entering more competitions and really want to show that it’s not that big and scary,” says Alex.

“People think there is

cus. There is so much to do and so much to learn – even now.”

So what is CrossFit?CrossFit is a core

strength and condition-ing programme which is for everyone regard-less of age, experience or fitness level as each workout is scalable.

This means that the exercise stays the same but how the exercise is performed will change depending on each indi-vidual’s experience and fitness level.

CrossFit workouts are constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements; with the goal to improve fitness

and therefore general physical preparedness.

This is done through a combination of sprint-ing, rowing, skipping, weightlifting, box jumps, pull-ups, kettle bells, medicine balls, rope climbing and many body weight exercises.

CrossFitters get to use lots of different equip-ment so there’s variety in the workouts.

Classes are limited to small groups which means each person re-

ceives personal atten-tion from the coaches.

For Perform Fitness owner Jack Holmes, the South Auckland cham-pionships is a chance for new CrossFitters to get along and watch Alex in action.

“My goal will be for our new CrossFitters to get along and watch ,” says Jack.

“We see the everest of the sport on ESPN and it is quite intimidating. But at the grassroots

level where we are, it’s much more fun.

“This is for everyone and anyone can do it.”

Anyone wanting to sign up for CrossFit needs to do a five week “On Ramp” course of two sessions per week where CrossFit and its basic movements are explained, along with how they can be applied in everyday life.

A group of MIT students have built a pirate ship play area and donated it to the Kawakawa Bay Kindergarten.

It is the first project the students have been involved in that directly benefits the community.

The students and their tutor, Jared McKay, designed and built the ship from scratch and then delivered it.

“We would never have been able to afford such a solid and well-built pirate ship, the children love it,” says Andrea Couldrey on behalf of the kindergarten.

Beachlands - For Sale: Expressions of Interest

I knew I’d found one such house when arriving at the front door of this wonderful two storey four bedroom property on the Second View Ave clifftop at Beachlands. To get to the door you walk across a stone bridge over the top of the goldfish in the lillypond below. That’s after first stopping to admire the unusual aloe banksia trees at the entrance to the wide aggregate driveway – at least, I think they are aloes!

Around the front of the house, the clifftop frontage is a gorgeous landscape of big rocks, ponds, ground covers and hebes giving a sort of savannah-themed landscape with the added advantage of ensuring nothing will grow tall enough to gets in the way of the stunning view that takes in Motuihe, Waiheke and the islands beyond.

Back to the front door, step inside and passages go in all directions, Head right, along a glass fronted passage, and round the corner to a master bedroom with big walk-in wardrobe combined with an ensuite big enough for both shower and bath.

There’s direct access to the informal family dining area, or head back along the passageway, and left again into another passage off which is internal access to a double car garage. The garage also has a work area down one side with plenty of bench and cupboard space. Off the same passage is a separate toilet and a laundry.

Back to the front door again, straight ahead and into the open plan kitchen and informal dining area. The kitchen is big with natural wood fittings, including a large bench area. There’s modern gas top stove, oven, double door fridge freezer and lots of storage.

Kitchen and dining area in front enjoy magnificent views and outside access.

To the left and through to the formal dining room and formal living area, again with magnificent views and outdoor access, with some intriguing shelf spaces.

Back to the front door yet again, and up wooden stairs to a communal landing area with room for chairs and coffee table, perhaps a small library? Then on the left and up three steps is a self contained guest wing with its own kitchenette and bedroom.

On the other side of the landing are two more bedrooms, one currently used as an office. There are high ceilings throughout with lots of glass allowing for plenty of light and sun.

Throughout the property there are unique design features, a sense of fun, great attention to detail and a flair for the dramatic

Saturday activities in-cluded swimming, a picnic lunch, vintage tractor rides, walks to the trig station on Duder Regional Park and the pa site, and an evening four square Naval meal under canvas followed by a family quiz.

On Sunday there was a heritage trail walk of Mt Victoria in Devonport, Duders Wharf store and Bake house, Duders Avenue, former family houses, family graves and the Naval museum.

Most Duder descen-dants in New Zealand have one common an-cestor, Able Seaman Thomas Duder, who was shipwrecked on Buf-falo Beach, Whitanga in 1840.

Duder then became the Signal Master on Mt Victoria, Devonport.

In 1866 he bought the Whakakaiwhera Block of 600 acres, (part of

which is now the Duder Regional Park) from Chief Hori te Whetuki.

Duder descendants still live on the land retained by the family.

12 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (February 6th 2015)

All about family since 1923.

Clevedon’s Fireside Bridge Club is back underway for a new year.

The club meets every Wednesday from 10.15am to about 2.15pm at All Souls Church hall in Clevedon for friendly duplicate bridge, with usually seven or more tables.

New players are most welcome, a partner is not necessary and beginners can even use their “cheat sheets”.

A course of lessons will start on February 25 at 9am. Contact

Peter Hill with his Most Improved Player trophy - and who also celebrated his birthday during the bridge club’s end of year get together.

A talented Balinese wood carver, now resident in Beachlands, has turned his hand to creating unique garden sculptures and water features.

Made (pronounced Marday) Adnyana first began wood carving traditional Ba-linese ornaments for tourists as a teenager back in his homeland.

After living in Beachlands for 10 years with his wife Julia, he has re-discov-ered his artistic flair, this time creating exotic sculptures and garden panels in a durable and long-lasting synthetic stone.

“I love carving and trying out different designs,” explains Made. “Each piece I create is one off and unique. It is an original.”

Made can spend from three days of full time carving on one panel to more than a week creating a more complex water feature.

He loves experimenting and introducing new elements, such as shells and pebbles, into his designs. He creates his bas-reliefs by hand using carving chis-els from Bali.

The creative process starts with Made visualising a concept in his mind, usu-ally borrowing harmonious patterns from nature which he gently stylises. He then transfers the design, drawing it in pencil on the bare “stone” panel, before beginning the intricate work of chiselling the details.

Once finished, each piece is sealed and uniquely finished creating an original masterpiece with a flowing and symmetrical effect that is pleasing to the eye and can grace any style of garden.

Gaining confidence in his creative abilities, Made has now launched his own business called Creative Carvings.

He has already had interest in his work from a commercial outlet but is keen to create one off individual commissions for clients.

“Anything a client would like I can carve specially for them,” says Made. For more information contact Made on 536-4257 or 021 295 2749.

Pauline on 299 7433 if you would like to join the Club or have lessons.

The Champion player for 2014 was Robin Elisak, with Judy Ryall just pipping Jill Menzies for the runner-up place.

The annual champion is calculated by averaging out each person’s three highest and three lowest scores over the year’s play.

The individual trophy was won by Lorna Hampton and the Most Improved player Peter Hill.

Made with water features he has created. Made has adapted his Balinese woodcarving skills to work in synthetic stone.

Players and referees from the Beachlands-Maraetai Touch Club participated in the In-ter-Provincial Series (IPS) touch tournament on January 24-25 at Ro-torua.

The tournament was for under 9, 11, 13 grades in boys, girls and mixed teams with provinces competing from Bay of Plenty and Waikato in the South to Te Tai Tokerau in the North.

Seven players from the Te Puru-based club competed in the IPS tournament represent-ing Counties-Manukau.

Out of the 14 finals, Counties won 9 and come runner up in two. All seven Beachlands-Maraetai players won their finals game to re-ceive gold medals.

The seven players are pictured along with Natalie Whittaker, who will play in the Junior National Touch Cham-pionship at Bruce Pull-man Park in Papakura on February 13-15 in the under 17 mixed elite team.

Also from the Beach-lands-Maraetai club was Adam Morrison who represented Auck-land in the under 11 mixed team at the re-cent Tri-Series and IPS tournaments.

including Kurt Harrison and Karl Brown who were then invited to ref-eree at the IPS tourna-ment in Rotorua.

After refereeing at Rotorua they have now been selected for the un-der 15 and 17 Nationals at Bruce Pullman Park. Kurt and Karl are part of the Counties refe-rees’ development plan to increase the capac-ity of the national ref-eree qualification base across the province.

Also from the Beach-lands-Maraetai club is Dave Te Whare (coach), Jeremy Ad-ams (assistant coach) and Bronwyn Te Whare (manager) who will lead the Counties Manukau Open Mixed team to compete in the

National Tournament at Bruce Pullman Park on March 6-8. Players in this team from Beach-lands Maraetai are Troy Larsen, Darren Wilson and Eden Johnston.

“The Beachlands Ma-raetai Touch committee is very proud of all the club’s representative players, referees and

Counties coaches,” says club chairman Simon Williamson.

“It is fantastic to see that opportunities and pathways that are avail-able for our players, referees, coaches and administrators.”

The annual battle of the bridge touch games will be held on Friday evening February 13 at Te Puru.

All 93 teams will battle it out for final placings on finals day Saturday February 28. Everyone is welcome to celebrate the season on touch finals day and the evening when Eddie Manukau will perform live.

Online rumours about fake animal control of-ficers scouring Auck-land suburbs to ‘steal dogs’ are completely unfounded.

Auckland Council wishes to confirm that their animal manage-ment staff and vehicles are legitimate and dog owners in the region should not be con-cerned.

The rumours began several weeks ago on a number of Facebook pages.

Successfully attracting and retaining skilled migrants to Auckland is a focus of a new partnership between Auckland Council, Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED) and Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

The three organisations have developed the Auckland Regional Partnership Agreement, a three-year plan to work collaboratively on shared priorities.

“Skilled migrants have a critical role to play in Auckland’s economy,” says Mayor Len Brown. “Likewise, strong relationships between the Auckland Council group and government agencies are also immensely important.”

Murphys Road is to be widened to two lanes in each direction between Flat Bush School Road and Redoubt Road

The Murphys-Re-doubt Road intersection will be realigned and traffic lights added to improve safety.

Redoubt Road will also be widened to two lanes in each direction between State Highway One and Murphys Road

Mill Road will be re-placed with a new arte-rial with two lanes in each direction between Murphys Road and Popes Road.

The Murphys Rd route is used frequently by Coast residents travel-ling to South Auckland.

The work will be part of Auckland Council’s upgrade of the Redoubt and Mill Road corri-dor, which is needed to support large housing growth in the area.

Traffic is predicted to double on the route in 10 to 15 years due to the growth. More than 22,000 new homes are proposed for the area, with about 10,000 planned in special hous-ing areas that are likely to be fast-tracked.

Between 2009 and 2013 there were 283 crashes, including four deaths, with a number

of accident hotspots on curves and junctions.

The formal process has now begun to give certainty to both exist-ing and future property owners regarding what land is needed for the

upgrade.Auckland Transport

has contacted affected property owners direct-ly about the project and is meeting with them to discuss their land owner rights and the planning

process. The upgrade will

need future purchase of 54 full properties and 257 partial properties (for example, part of a driveway or frontage).
