Those who ignore the news from that country are drinkingwith those who exercise themselves
with every fact of every death, every figure, image, and quotethat tallies or tells
who deserves rebuke – the world is full of voices – and whomsome help: cans, clothes, and prayers
for the ones under siege in that maimed town. Those whoignore the pain the news portrays,
the pain it portends – some are lulled, then hurled by each – leaninto the half-light
stripping the bar of its veneer, their glasses diminishing by thehour their focus on the screen, half-lit
while ‘‘Harvest Moon’’ recycles itself on the jukebox, skippingat the third refrain, then going
across the record’s scratch (the boy on a run at the table needsthe song for the balls to go in).
With last call at ten to two, the boy’s grin due to expire,those who ignore
and those more aware make sure both hands are full againstfriction and the hand of war.
The box is unplugged mid-song, the 8 knocked into the night’slast pocket, the cues returned
to the rack: those who ignore and those more aware unsettlethemselves from their stools, having learned

a score, or two, who fucked whom the night before, or gotfucked, and head together for the door,
where their cars wait to take them – in solemn troops and sweetsociety – home to their private war.
