What is Poetry?
Poetry is difficult to pin down and define because it can take
many different forms. Poetry is defined as:
“Literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings & ideas by the use of distinctive style & rhythm.”
• (webster’s dictionary)
What’s the Point?
convey meaning, emotion, thoughts, ideas

has the capacity to connect with all humans because it speaks to emotions

topics are universal-everyone can understand (ex. life, love)

Activity ONe: Chain Poem
• Step # 1: Write the word “Mirror”
• Step # 2: Write 5 words that come to mind when you read this word
• Step # 3: Make sentences out of the words you wrote
• Step #4: Organize your sentences & read to group
Different Types of Poetry
There are many different types of poetry, here are some common types:
• Free-Verse- no rhyming scheme, no parameters
• Blank-Verse- no rhyme scheme, iambic pentameter
• Rhyming Couplet- every two lines rhyme (aa/bb/cc)
• Haiku- strict syllable requirements (5,7,5)
Activity
You are going to listen to a song and a poem that highlightthe same theme (love & life) . While listening, you are going to compare and contrast. Also, take note of any
figurative languageyou find.

Now you are going to do some comparison on your own.
1) Find an examples of ONE poem about love and ONE song
about love.
2) Compare the two (similarities/differences)
3) Identify any use of figurative language
4) Now do the same for a poem and song about life
