Alliteration, Consonance, & Assonance
ALLITERATION
the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
EX: I heard ten tiny, tinkling teacups as we toasted to a good day.
CONSONANCE
Similar to alliteration because it deals with the repetition of consonant sounds
Different from alliteration because the repetition of consonant sounds occurs in the middle or end of words instead of at the beginning
CONSONANCE EXAMPLES
On my plate, put a little bit of Jell-o for me to taste.
The rising sun criticizes the flowers as it scorches their lazy petals.
Little Red Riding Hood slept soundly in the bed.
ASSONANCE
similar to alliteration and consonance because it is the repetition of sounds in words
different from alliteration and consonance because it is the repetition of vowel sounds rather than the repetition of consonant sounds.
The repeated vowel sounds must be followed by different consonant sounds
ASSONANCE OR NOT? hot pasta
moon foot
house out
home bone
alone bone
YES! “ah”
NO! “oo” & “uh”
YES! “ow”
YES! “oh”
NO! “oh” but same consonant sounds
