A record grid of thirtyfour Lamborghini’s competed in front of an enthusiastic crowd and VSR entered an unchanged driver lineup with Kei Cozzolino and Shinya Michimi driving the number 16 car and Olly Rae and Jacopo Faccioni at the wheel of the number 18. Paul Ricard was a new circuit for all four drivers so the weekend presented them with a challenging learning curve. After free practice on Friday qualifying took place on Saturday and each driver had just fifteen minutes in which to set their best time. Cozzolino and Faccioni set the times for race one but their session was interrupted by a red flag with two and a half minutes left on the clock. Cozzolino qualified the car on the sixth row while Faccioni claimed a place on row ten. Subscribe Share Past Issues Transl

Clear blue skies and perfect summer temperatures greeted the cars when theylined  up  on  the  grid  for  Saturday’s  fifty  minute  race  which  was  shown  liveacross  the  globe  on  Motors  TV,  Nuvolari  and  via  the  Super  Trofeo  livestreaming. Cozzolino lost one place on the opening lap but was quick to claim it

back again and was running in 11th when the safety car came out. After threeslow tours with  the field closed up behind the safety car, when  it peeled backinto the pits the pit window was open and the team took advantage and calledboth  cars  in.  Cozzolino  handed  over  to  Michimi  whilst  Rae  took  over  fromFaccioni who had started the number 18 Huracán. By lap thirteen, when the pit

window closed, Michimi was in 4th place dicing hard with Crestani. A  lap  laterCrestani spun down the field after light contact with Michimi and the number 16

car moved into 3rd place. Meanwhile Rae was having a storming race and had

moved  up  to  12th  overall,  5th  in  class.  On  the  final  lap  he  pulled  off  some

stunning  overtaking  and  it  looked  like  3rd  in  class  would  be  his  reward  until

Pellegrinelli drove into him. Michimi took the flag in 3rd place while Rae bought

his damaged Lamborghini home in 12th position, 4th in the ProAm class.

A postrace penalty  for Pellegrinelli promoted  the FaccioniRae partnership  to

3rd  in class,  their best ever  finish, whilst Michimi was given an exaggeratedlyharsh penalty  for  tapping Crestani and he and teammate Cozzolino  lost  their

For Sunday morning’s  race Michimi had qualified  the 16 car on  row  four and Raehad  put  the  18  car  on  row  six  after  posting  the  fourth  fastest  time  of  the  ProAmdrivers. Michimi and Faccioni started the race but half way round the opening lap thesafety car was called out and  the  field  remained behind  it until  lap  four. Both cars

benefited from the errors of their rivals and when racing resumed Michimi was in 4th

place and Faccioni in 9th. A mistake from Kujala promoted the number 16 car to 3rd

and when  the pit window opened Michimi was chasing down  the Spinello/Moscatocar in second. At the end of lap eight Faccioni pitted the 18 car and handed it over toRae  and  two  laps  later Michimi  followed  suit.  Cozzolino  took  over  the  16  car  and

when the pit stop window closed they were lying in 2nd. Through the second half ofthe  race Cozzolino pulled away  from  the cars behind him and  took  the chequered

glad  with  a  comfortable  margin  of  eight  seconds  over  3rd  place  to  take  a  welldeserved  podium  finish  for  himself  and  teammate  Michimi.  Rae  meanwhile  had

driven well again and bought the number 18 car back home in 8th overall, 4th in theProAm class. The Super Trofeo Championship will be back for round four at the aweinspiring SpaFrancorchamps circuit next month.
