Are you at risk of having a STROKE?

Winter brings increased risk of heart attacks

Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound Screening: $40An ultrasound of the abdominal aorta is a non-invasive, painless test that uses high-frequency sound waves to image the aorta, the main blood vessel leading away from the heart. When the walls of the abdominal aorta become weak, they may balloon outward. If the aorta reaches over 3 centimeters in diameter, it is then called an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). As the aneurysm gets larger, the risk of rupture increases.

Carotid Artery Ultrasound Screening: $40A carotid ultrasound is performed to test for narrowed carotid arteries, which increase the risk of stroke. Carotid ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of the carotid arteries in the neck which carry blood from the heart to the brain.

Peripheral Arterial Disease Screening: $20Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD), more commonly known as hardening of the arteries, affects about eight million Americans. It is a condition in which the large and medium-sized arteries supplying blood to the legs become narrow or clogged, constricting the flow of blood.

Atrial Fibrillation Screening: $10A non-invasive procedure used to detect irregular heartbeat (a major risk factor for stroke), an Atrial Fibrillation screening is performed by attaching EKG electrodes above your wrists and ankles.

Respiratory Therapy receives unique new equipment

You can’t breathe. You’re starving for oxygen. In the Emergency Room, the nurse puts a nasal cannula under your nose, but the oxygen you receive is not regular oxygen - it’s humidified and delivered to you at body temperature using new respiratory equipment called Vapotherm.

Vapotherm is a tool commonly used to address the signs and symptoms of patients in respiratory distress due to COPD, shortness of breath or pneumonia.

Michelle Whelan, Respiratory Therapist said, “The Vapotherm will enable hospital staff to deliver specially conditioned oxygen to the patient without drying airways and reducing the amount of effort it takes for the patient to breathe.”

For more information about HHC’s Respiratory Therapy department, contact Michelle Whelan at (402) 723-4512.

In an effort to enhance day to day life and make our care practices

more individualized to each resident, Henderson Care Center will be implementing Culture Change.

Natural WakingStaff will no longer be waking residents up, instead we will allow them to wake on their own. Breakfast time will be extended to accommodate this.

Undisturbed SleepStaff will no longer be waking residents every 2 hours to check them, but instead doing hourly safety checks to assure they are safe and comfortable. Better quality incontinent products and mattresses will be utilized. Additionally, lighting and sound changes will accommodate a sounder night of rest. At any time the resident has a need or utilizes the call llight, complete care will continue to be given.

Why are we doing this?Numerous studies have shown deep sleep facilitates less confusion, less “Sundowner’s Syndrome”, fewer behaviors, reduction in falls, and actually builds immunity. Facilities that have implemented this have seen fewer illnesses and lower infection rates.

When did this begin? Our implementation day was January 10, 2018. If at any time you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call a member of leadership at the Care Center. We hope you can support our changes and look forward to a positive Culture Change in 2018!

Some people may be at increased risk of a heart attack during snow shoveling. The combination of colder temperatures and physical exertion increases the workload on the heart. That’s why people who are outdoors in cold weather should avoid sudden exertion, such as lifting a heavy shovel packed with snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snow drifts can strain the heart.

“For people with existing heart conditions like heart failure, high blood pressure or cholesterol, the increased workload

on the heart from activities such as shoveling heavy snow, can put them at higher risk for

heart attack,” said Katie Harwick, Cardiac Rehabilitation RN.

Here are tips for heart-safe snow shoveling:• Give yourself a break• Don’t eat a big meal before or soon after shoveling• Use a small shovel or a snow blower• Learn the heart attack warnings, listen to your body• Do not drink alcohol before or soon after shoveling• Consult a doctor ahead of time. Before you start shoveling, talk with your doctor if you have a

medical condition, do not exercise on a regular basis or are middle-aged or older.
