For two years from date of purchase, when this Craftsman Lawn Mower is maintained,lubricated, and tuned up according to the operating and maintenance instructions in theowner's manual, Sears will repair free of charge any defect in material or workmanship.

If this Craftsman Lawn Mower is used for commercial or rental purposes, this warrantyapplies for only 90 days from the date of purchase.

This Warranty does not cover:• Expendable items which become worn during normal use, such as rotary mower

blades, blade adapters, belts, air cleaners and spark plug.• Repairs necessary because of operator abuse or negligence, including bent crank-

shafts and the failure to maintain the equipment according to the instructions con-tained in the owner's manual.

Warranty service is available by returning the Craftsman power mower to the nearestSears Parts & Repair Center in the United States. This warranty applies only while thisproduct is used in the United States.

This Warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights whichvary from state to state.

I. GENERAL OPERATION• Read, understand, and follow all

instructions on the machine and in themanual(s) before starting. Be thoroughlyfamiliar with the controls and the properuse of the machine before starting.

• Do not put hands or feet near or underrotating parts. Keep clear of the dis-charge opening at all times.

• Only allow responsible individuals, whoare familiar with the instructions, tooperate the machine.

• Clear the area of objects such as rocks,toys, wire, bones, sticks, etc., whichcould be picked up and thrown by theblade.

• Be sure the area is clear of other peoplebefore mowing. Stop machine if anyoneenters the area.

• Do not operate the mower when bare-foot or wearing open sandals. Alwayswear substantial foot wear.

• Do not pull mower backwards unlessabsolutely necessary. Always look downand behind before and while movingbackwards.

• Do not operate the mower withoutproper guards, plates, grass catcher orother safety protective devices in place.

• See manufacturer's instructions forproper operation and installation ofaccessories. Only use accessories ap-proved by the manufacturer.

• Stop the blade(s) when crossing graveldrives, walks, or roads.

• Stop the engine (motor) whenever youleave the equipment, before cleaningthe mower or unclogging the chute.

• Shut the engine (motor) off and waituntil the blade comes to complete stopbefore removing grass catcher.

• Mow only in daylight or good artificiallight.

• Do not operate the machine while underthe influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Never operate machine in wet grass.Always be sure of your footing: keep afirm hold on the handle and walk; neverrun.

• Disengage the self-propelled mech-anism or drive clutch on mowers soequipped before starting the engine(motor).

• If the equipment should start to vibrateabnormally, stop the engine (motor) andcheck immediately for the cause. Vibra-tion is generally a warning of trouble.

• Always wear safety goggles or safetyglasses with side shields when oper-ating mower. 3

II. SLOPE OPERATION

Slopes are a major factor related to slipand fall accidents which can result insevere injury. All slopes require extra cau-tion. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do notmow it.DO:

• Mow across the face of slopes: neverup and down. Exercise extreme cautionwhen changing direction on slopes.

• Remove obstacles such as rocks, treelimbs, etc.

• Watch for holes, ruts, or bumps. Tallgrass can hide obstacles.

DO NOT:

• Do not trim near drop-offs, ditches orembankments. The operator could losefooting or balance.

• Do not trim excessively steep slopes.• Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced foot-

ing could cause slipping.

III. CHILDREN

Tragic accidents can occur if the operatoris not alert to the presence of children.Children are often attracted to the machineand the mowing activity. Never assumethat children will remain where you lastsaw them.• Keep children out of the trimming area

and under the watchful care of anotherresponsible adult.

• Be alert and turn machine off if childrenenter the area.

• Before and while walking backwards,look behind and down for small children.

• Never allow children to operate the ma-chine.

• Use extra care when approaching blindcorners, shrubs, trees, or other objectsthat may obscure vision.

IV. SERVICE

• Use extra care in handling gasoline andother fuels. They are flammable andvapors are explosive.- Use only an approved container.- Never remove gas cap or add fuelwith the engine running.Allow engine to cool before refueling.Do not smoke.

- Never refuel the machine indoors.- Never store the machine or fuelcontainer inside where there is anopen flame, such as a water heater.

• Never run a machine inside a closed area.• Never make adjustments or repairs with

the engine (motor) running. Disconnectthespark plug wire, and keep the wire awayfrom the plug to prevent accidental starting.

• Keepnuts and bolts,especiallybladeattachmentbolts, tightand keepequip-ment ingood condition.

• Nevertamperwith safetydevices.Checktheir properoperationregularly.

• Keep machine free of grass, leaves, orotherdebrisbuild-up.Cleanoilorfuelspill-age.Allowmachineto coolbeforestoring.

• Stop and inspectthe equipmentif youstrikean object.Repair,if necessary,before restarting.

• Neverattempttomakewheelheightadjust-mentswhiletheengine(motor)is running.

• Grasscatchercomponentsaresubjectto wear, damage,and deterioration,which couldexposemovingpartsorallowobjectsto be thrown.Frequentlycheckcomponentsand replacewithmanufacturer'srecommendedparts,when necessary.

Read these instructions and this manual inits entirety before you attempt to assembleor operate your new lawn mower.IMPORTANT: This lawn mower is shippedWITHOUT OIL OR GASOLINE in the engine.Your new lawn mower has been as-sembled at the factory with the excep-tion of those parts left unassembled forshipping purposes. TO REMOVE LAWN MOWER FROMCARTON

1. Remove loose parts included withmower.

2. Cut down two end corners of cartonand lay end panel down flat.

3. Remove all packing materials exceptpadding between upper and lowerhandle and padding holding operatorpresence control bar to upper handle.

4. Roll lawn mower out of carton andcheck carton thoroughly for additionalloose parts.

tion locks into place in mowing position.2. Remove protective padding, raise up-

ENGINE SPEED

The engine speed was set at the factoryfor optimum performance. Speed is notadjustable.ENGINE ZONE CONTROL

[LCAUTION: Federal regulations requirean engine control to be installed on thislawn mower in order to minimize therisk of blade contact injury. Do not underany circumstances attempt to defeat thefunction of the operator control. The bladeturns when the engine is running.• Your lawn mower is equipped with an

operator presence control bar whichrequires the operator to be positionedbehind the lawn mower handle to startand operate the lawn mower.

TO ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHTRaise wheels for low cut and lower wheelsfor high cut, adjust cutting height to suityour requirements. Medium position isbest for most lawns.• To change cutting height, squeeze ad-

juster lever toward wheel. Move wheelup or down to suit your requirements.Be sure all wheels are in the same set-

ting.NOTE: Adjuster is properly positionedwhen plate tab inserts into hole in lever.Also, 9-position adjusters (if so equipped)allow lever to be positioned between theplate tabs.

Your lawn mower was shipped ready to beused as a mulcher. To convert to bagging:• Lift rear door of the lawn mower and

place the grass catcher frame hooksonto the door pivot pins.

• To convert to mulching operation, re-move grass catcher and close rear door.

CAUTION: Do not run your lawn mowerwithout rear door closed, clipping deflectoror approved grass catcher in place. Neverattempt to operate the lawn mower withthe rear door removed or propped open.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

ADD OIL

Your lawnmower is shipped without oil inthe engine. For type and grade of oil touse, see "ENGINE" in the Maintenancesection of this manual.4[_ CAUTION: DO NOT overfill engine withoil, or it will smoke heavily from the muffleron startup.1. Be sure lawnmower is level.2. Remove oil dipstick from oil fill spout.3. You receive a container of oil with the

unit. Slowly pour the entire containerdown the oil fill spout into the engine.

4. Insert and tighten dipstick.IMPORTANT:• Check oil level before each use. Add oil

if needed. Fill to full line on dipstick.• Change the oil after every 25 hours of

operation or each season. You mayneed to change the oil more oftenunder dusty, dirty conditions. See "TOCHANGE ENGINE OIC' in the Mainte-nance section of this manual.

ADD GASOLINE

• Fill fuel tank to bottom of tank filler neck.Do not overfill. Use fresh, clean, regularunleaded gasoline with a minimum of87 octane. Do not mix oil with gasoline.Purchase fuel in quantities that can beused within 30 days to assure fuel fresh-ness.CAUTION: Wipe off any spilled oil or

fuel. Do not store, spill or use gasolinenearA an open flame.

CAUTION: Alcohol blended fuels(called gasohol or using ethanol or metha-nol) can attract moisture which leads toseparation and formation of acids duringstorage. Acidic gas can damage the fuelsystem of an engine while in storage. Toavoid engine problems, the fuel systemshould be emptied before storage of 30days or longer. Empty the gas tank, startthe engine and let it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. See Storage Instructions foradditional information. Never use engineor carburetor cleaner products in the fueltank or permanent damage may occur.

TO STOP ENGINE

• To stop engine, release operator pres-ence control bar.

TO START ENGINE

NOTE: Due to protective coatings on theengine, a small amount of smoke may bepresent during the initial use of the prod-uct and should be considered normal.1. To start a cold engine, push primer

three (3) times before trying to start.Use a firm push. This step is notusually necessary when starting anengine which has already run for a fewminutes.

2. Hold operator presence control bardown to the handle and pull starterhandle quickly. Do not allow starterrope to snap back.

NOTE: In cooler weather it may be neces-sary to repeat priming steps. In warmerweather over priming may cause floodingand engine will not start. If you do floodengine, wait a few minutes before attempt-ing to start and do not repeat primingsteps.

MOWING TIPS• Under certain conditions, such as very

tall grass, it may be necessary to raisethe height of cut to reduce pushingeffort and to keep from overloading theengine and leaving clumps of grass clip-pings. _tmay also be necessary to re-duce ground speed and/or run the lawnmower over the area a second time.

• For extremely heavy cutting, reduce thewidth of cut by overlapping previouslycut path and mow slowly.

• For better grass bagging and most cut-ting conditions, the engine speed shouldbe set in the FAST position.

• When using a rear discharge lawnmower in moist, heavy grass, clumpsof cut grass may not enter the grasscatcher. Reduce ground speed (pushingspeed) and/or run the lawn mower overthe area a second time.

• If a trail of clippings is left on the rightside of a rear discharge mower, mow ina clockwise direction with a small over-lap to collect the clippings on the nextpass.

• Pores in cloth grass catchers can be-come filled with dirt and dust with useand catchers will collect less grass. Toprevent this, regularly hose catcher offwith water and let dry before using.

• Keep top of engine around starter clearand clean of grass clippings and chaff.This will help engine air flow and extendengine life.

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: For best performance,keep mower housing free of built-upgrass and trash. See "CLEANING" in theMaintenance section of this manual.

• The special mulching blade will recutthe grass clippings many times andreduce them in size so that as they fallonto the lawn they will disperse intothe grass and not be noticed. Also, themulched grass will biodegrade quicklyto provide nutrients for the lawn. Alwaysmulch with your highest engine (blade)speed as this will provide the best recut-ting action of the blades.

• Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet.Wet grass tends to form clumps andinterferes with the mulching action. Thebest time to mow your lawn is the earlyafternoon. At this time the grass hasdried, yet the newly cut area will not beexposed to direct sunlight.

• For best results, adjust the lawn mowercutting height so that the lawn mowercuts off only the top one-third of thegrass blades. If the lawn is overgrown itwill be necessary to raise the height ofcut to reduce pushing effort and to keepfrom overloading the engine and leavingclumps of mulched grass. For extremelyheavy grass, reduce your width of cutby overlapping previously cut path andmow slowly.

MAXI_

• Certain types of grass and grassconditions may require that an area bemulched a second time to completelyhide the clippings. When doing a sec-ond cut, mow across (perpendicular) tothe first cut path.

• Change your cutting pattern from weekto week. Mow north to south one weekthen change to east to west the nextweek. This will help prevent matting andgraining of the lawn.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS

The warranty on this lawn mower does notcover items that have been subjected tooperator abuse or negligence. To receivefull value from the warranty, operator mustmaintain unit as instructed in this manual.Some adjustments will need to be madeperiodically to properly maintain your unit.At least once a season, check to see ifyou should make any of the adjustmentsdescribed in the Service and Adjustmentssection of this manual.• At least once a year, replace the spark

plug, clean or replace air filter elementand check blade for wear. A new sparkplug and clean/new air filter elementassure proper air-fuel mixture and helpyour engine run better and last longer.

• Follow the maintenance schedule in thismanual.

IMPORTANT: Do not oil or grease plasticwheel bearings. Viscous lubricants willattract dust and dirtthatwill shorten the life ofthe self-lubricating bearings. If you feel theymust be lubricated, use only a dry, powdered

1 1graphite type lubricant sparingly.

LAWN MOWERAlways observe safety rules when per-forming any maintenance.TIRES• Keep tires free of gasoline, oil, or insect

control chemicals which can harm rubber.• Avoid stumps, stones, deep ruts, sharp

objects and other hazards that maycause tire damage.

BLADE CAREFor best results, mower blade must be keptsharp. Replace bent or damaged blades.

TO REMOVE BLADE

1. Disconnect spark plug wire from sparkplug and place wire where it cannotcome in contact with spark plug.

2. Turn lawn mower on its side. Makesure air filter and carburetor are up.

3. Use a wood block between blade andmower housing to prevent blade fromturning when removing blade bolt.

NOTE: Protect your hands with glovesand/or wrap blade with heavy cloth.4. Remove blade bolt by turning counter-

clockwise.5. Remove blade and attaching hardware

(bolt, lock washer and hardened washer).

TO REPLACE BLADE

1. Position blade on the blade adapteraligning the two (2) holes in the bladewith the raised lugs on the adapter.

2. Be sure the trailing edge of blade (oppo-site sharp edge) is up toward the engine.

3. Install the blade bolt with the lockwasher and hardened washer intoblade adapter and crankshaft.

4. Use block of wood between blade andlawn mower housing and tighten theblade bolt, turning clockwise.

• The recommended tightening torque is35-40 ft. Ibs.

IMPORTANT: Blade bolt is heat treated.If bolt needs replacing, replace only withapproved bolt shown in the Repair Partssection of this manual.

TO SHARPEN BLADENOTE: We do not recommend sharpeningthe blade - but if you do, be sure the bladeis balanced.Care should be taken to keep the bladebalanced. An unbalanced blade willcause eventual damage to lawn mower orengine.• The blade can be sharpened with a file

or on a grinding wheel. Do not attemptto sharpen while on the mower.

• To check blade balance, drive a nail intoa beam or wall. Leave about one inch ofthe straight nail exposed. Place centerhole of blade over the head of the nail.If blade is balanced, it should remain ina horizontal position. If either end of theblade moves downward, sharpen theheavy end until the blade is balanced.

GRASS CATCHER

The grass catcher may be hosed withwater, but must be dry when used.Check your grass catcher often for dam-age or deterioration. Through normaluse it will wear. 4. Wipe off any spilled oil from lawnmower or side of engine.

5. Slowly pour oil down the oil fill spout,stopping every few ounces to check theoil level with the dipstick.

6. Stop adding oil when you reach theFULL mark on the dipstick. Wait aminute to allow oil to settle.

7. Continue adding small amounts of oil,rechecking the dipstick until oil levelsettles at FULL. DO NOT overfill, orengine will smoke heavily from themuffler on startup.

8. Always be sure to retighten oil dipstickbefore starting engine.

9. Reconnect spark plug wire to spark plug.AIR FILTER

Your engine will not run properly and maybe damaged by using a dirty air filter.Replace the air filter cartridge every 100hours of operation or every season, which-ever occurs first. Service air cleaner moreoften under dusty conditions.

TO CLEAN AIR FILTER

1. Loosen screw and tilt cover to remove.2. Carefully remove cartridge.3. Clean by gently tapping on a flat sur-

face. If very dirty, replace cartridge.

MUFFLER

Inspect and replace corroded muffler as itcould create a fire hazard and/or damage.

SPARK PLUG

Replace spark plug at the beginning ofeach mowing season or after every 100hours of operation, whichever occursfirst. Spark plug type and gap settingare shown in the "PRODUCT SPECIFIC-ATIONS" section of this manual.

You can fold your lawn mower handle forstorage.NOTE: The upper handle has an "anti-fold"bracket located on the right side of thehandle. This bracket prevents the upperhandle from folding forward, which helpsprotect control cable(s) from damage.1. Squeeze the bottom ends of the lower

handle toward each other until thelower handle clears the handle bracket,then move handle forward.

2. Loosen upper handle mounting boltsenough to allow upper handle to befolded back.

ENGINEFUEL SYSTEM

IMPORTANT: It is important to preventgum deposits from forming in essentialfuel system parts such as carburetor, fuelfilter, fuel hose, or tank during storage.Also, alcohol blended fuels (called gasoholor using ethanol or methanol) can attractmoisture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acidicgas can damage the fuel system of anengine while in storage.• Empty the fuel tank by starting the en-

gine and letting it run until the fuel linesand carburetor are empty.

• Never use engine or carburetor cleanerproducts in the fuel tank or permanentdamage may occur.

• Use fresh fuel next season.NOTE: Fuel stabilizer is an acceptablealternative in minimizing the formation offuel gum deposits during storage. Addstabilizer to gasoline in fuel tank or stor-age container. Always follow the mix ratiofound on stabilizer container. Run engineat least 10 minutes after adding stabilizerto allow the stabilizer to reach the car-buretor. Do not empty the gas tank andcarburetor if using fuel stabilizer.

ENGINE OIL

Drain oil (with engine warm) and replacewith clean engine oil. (See "ENGINE" inthe Maintenance section of this manual).

CYLINDER

1. Remove spark plug.2. Pour one ounce (29 ml) of oil through

spark plug hole into cylinder.3. Pull starter handle slowly a few times to

distribute oil.4. Replace with new spark plug.

OTHER

• Do not store gasoline from one seasonto another.

• Replace your gasoline can if your canstarts to rust. Rust and/or dirt in yourgasoline will cause problems.

• If possible, store your unit indoors andcover it to protect it from dust and dirt.

• Cover your unit with a suitable protec-tive cover that does not retain moisture.Do not use plastic. Plastic cannotbreathe, which allows condensation toform and will cause your unit to rust.

IMPORTANT: Never cover mower whileengine and exhaust areas are still warm._[I,CAUTION: Never store the lawn mower

with gasoline in the tank inside a buildingwhere fumes may reach an open flameor spark. Allow the engine to cool beforestoring in any enclosure.

I. OPERAClON• Antes de empezar, debe familiarizarse comple-

Lea estas instrucciones y este manual comple-tamente antes de tratar de montar u operar susegadora nueva.IMPORTANTE: Este cortac_sped viene SINACEITE O GASOLINA en el motor.

Su segadora nueva ha side montada en laf&brica con la excepci6n de aquellas partes quese dejaron sin montar por razones de envio.Todas tas partes como las tuercas, tas arande-las, los pernos, etc., que son necesadas paracompletar el montaje han side colocadas en labolsa de partes. Para asegurarse que su sega-dora funcione en forma segura y adecuada,todas las partes y los arficulos de ferreteria quese monten tienen que ser apretados segura-mente. Use las herramientas correctas, comosea necesario, para asegurar que se aprietenadecuadamente.PARA REMOVER LA SEGADORA DELA CAJA DE CARTON1. Remueva las partes sueltas que se incluyen

con la segadora.2. Corte las dos esquinas de los extremos

de la caja de cart6n y tienda el panel delextremo piano.

3. Remueva todo el material de empaque, ex-cepto la curia entre el mango superior y _1inferior, y la curia que sujeta la barra de loscontrol que exige la presencia del operadorjunto con el mango superior.

4. Haga rodar la segadora hacia afuera de lacaja de cart6n y revisela cuidadosamentepara verificar si todavia quedan partessueltas adicionales.

COMO PREPARAR SU SEGADORAPARA DESDOBLAR EL MANGOIMPORTANTE: Despliegue el mango conmucho cuidado para no pellizcar o dafiar loscables de control.1. Levante los mangos hasta que la secci6n

del mango inferior se asegure en su lugar,en la posici6n para segar.

2. Remueva la curia protectora, levante la sec-ci6n del mango superior hasta su lugar enel mango inferior, y apriete ambas manillasdel mango.

3. Remueva la curia del mango que sujeta labarra de los control que exige la presenciadet operador junto con el mango superior.

El mango de la segadora puede ajustarseseg_n le acomode para segar. Refi_rase a"AJUSTE DEL MANGO" en la secci6n deServicio y Ajustes de este manual.

PARA MONTAR EL RECOGEDOR DE ClaSPED1. Ponga el bastidor del recogedor de c6sped

en la bolsa del c_sped con la parte rfgidade la bolsa en la parte inferior. Asegt]reseque el mango del bastidor est_ en el exte-rior de la parte superior de la bolsa.

2. Destice los sujetadores de vinilo sobre elbastidor.

AVlSO: Si los sujetadores de vinilo est&n muyduros, m6talos en agua catiente por algunosminutos. Si se moja la bolsa, d6jela que seseque antes de usarla.

La operaci6n de cualquiersegadora puede hacer quesatten objetos extrafios dentro desus ojos, Io que puede producirdafios graves en _stos. Siempre

use anteojos de seguridad o protecci6n paralos ojos mientras opere su segadora o cuandohaga ajustes o reparaciones. Recomendamosgafas o una mascara de seguridad de visi6namplia de seguridad usada sobre las gafas.

COMO USAR SU SEGADORAVELOCIDAD DEL MOTORLa velocidad del motor se estableci6 en la f_-brica para un rendimiento 6ptimo. La velocidadno se puede ajustar.

dI_NTROL DE ZONA DEL MOTORPRECAUCI(_N: Las regulaciones federales

exigen que se instale un control para el motoren esta segadora para reducir a un mfnimo elriesgo de lesionarse debido al contacto con lacuchilla. Por ningt]n motivo trate de eliminarla funci6n del control del operador. La cuchillagira cuando el motor est& funcionando.• Su segadora viene equipada con una barra

de controles que exigen la presencia deloperador, Io que requiere que el operadorest6 detrAs del mango de la segadora parahacerla arrancar y operarla.

PARA AJUSTAR LA ALTURA DE CORTELevante las ruedas para el corte bajo y baje lasruedas para el corte alto., ajuste la altura decorte para que se acomode a sus requisitos. Laposici6n del medio es la mejor para la mayoriade los c_spedes.• Para cambiar la altura de corte, empuje la

palanca del ajustador hacia la rueda. Muevala rueda hacia arriba o hacia abajo de modoque se acomode a sus requisitos. Aseg=3reseque todas las ruedas queden igualmenteajustadas.

AMISO: El ajustador esta correctamentecolocado cuando las orejas de la placa est#,ninsertadas en et agujero det mango. Tambi_n,los ajustes de 9 posiciones (si equipado) per-miten que el mango pueda ser movido entre lasorejas de la placa.

• Para pasar a la opercai6n de acolchamiento,remover la recolectora de hierba y cerrar la

_[iLpuerta trasera.PRECAUCION: No haga funcionar su sega-

dora sin puerta trasera cerrada o el desviadorde recortes o sin el recogedor de c6sped,aprobados, en su lugar. Nunca trate de operarla segadora cuando se ha removido la puertatrasera o cuando estA un poco abierta.

PARA VACIAR EL RECOGEDOR DE ClaSPED1. Levante el recogedor de c_sped usando el

ANTES DE HACER ARRANCAR ELMOTORAGREGUE ACEITESu segadora fue enviada sin aceite en el motor.Para el tipo y el grado del aceite a utilizar, veael "MOTOR" en la secci6n del Mantenimiento deeste manual._PRECAUCI(_N: NO sobrellene el motor con

aceite, o fumar& pesa demante del silenciadorcuando Io valla a arrancar.

1. Aseg=3rese que la segadora est6 nivelada.2. Remueva la varila medidora de aceite del tubo

de desarga de aceite.3. Usted recibe un envase de aceite con la

unidad. Vierta lentamente el envase enterode aceite en el tube de relleno del motor.

4. Inserte y apriete la varilla medidora deaceite.

IMPORTANTE:• Revise el nivel del aceite antes de cada uso.

Agregue aceite si es necesario. Llene hasta lalinea de lleno en la varilla medidora de nivel.

• Cambie el aceite despu6s de 25 horas deoperaci6n o una vez per temporada. Puedenecesitar cambiar el aceite m&s a menudocuando las condiciones son polvorosas o su-cias. Vea "PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DELMOTOR" en la seccion de Mantenimiento deeste manual.

AGREGUE GASOLINA• Llene el estanque de combustible hasta

la parte inferior del cuello de relleno delestanque de gasolina. No Io llene demasiado.Use gasolina regular, sin plomo, nueva y lim-pia con el m[nimo de 87 octanos. No mezcleel aceite con la gasolina. Para asegurarque ta gasolina utilizada sea fresca compreestanques los cuales puedan ser utilizadosdurante los primeros 30 dfas.

_PREOAUOION: Limpie el aceite o elcombustible derramado. No almacene, derrameo use gasolina cerca de una llama expuesta.A_,PRECAUOI(_N: Los combustiblesmezclados con alcohol (conocidos comegasohol, o el uso de etanol o metanol) puedenatraer la humedad, la que conduce a laseparaci6n y formaci6n de &cidos durante elalmacenamiento. La gasolina acidica puededaSar el sistema del combustible de un motordurante et almacenamiento. Para evitar losproblemas con el motor, se debe vaciar elsistema del combustible antes de guardarlopor un perfodo de 30 dias o m_,s.Vacfe elestanque del combustible, haga arrancar elmotor y h_,galo funcionar hasta que las lfneasdel combustible y el carburador queden vacios.La pr6xima temporada use combustible nuevo.Vea tas Instrucciones Para El Almacenamientopara mas informaci6n. PARA PARAR EL MOTOR• Para parar el motor, suelte la barra de con-

troles que exigen la presencia del operador.

PARA HACER ARRANCAR EL MOTORAVI$O: Debido alas capas protectoras del mo-tor, una cantidad pequeiSa de humo puede es-tar presente durante el use inicial del productoy se debe considerar normal.1. Para hacer arrancar un motor if[o, empuje

el cebador tres (3) veces antes de tratarlo.Empuje firmemente. Este paso normal-mente no es neoesario ouando se haoearrancar un motor que ya ha estado funcio-nando per unos cuantos minutos.

2. Sujete la barra de controies que exigen lapresencia del operador abajo en el mangoy tire el mango det arrancador r&pidamente.No permita que et cord6n arrancador sedevuelva abruptamente.

AVISO: En climas mAs frios puede que seanecesario repetir los pasos del cebado. En cli-mas m&s calurosos el cebar demasiado puedeproducir el ahogo y el motor no va a arrancar.Si se ahoga el motor espere unos cuantosminutes antes de tratar de hacerlo arrancar yno repita los pasos del cebado.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR• Bajo ciertas condiciones, tal como c_sped

muy alto, puede ser necesario el elevar laaltura del corte para reducir el esfuerzonecesario para empujar la segadora y paraevitar sobrecargar el motor, dejando mon-tones de recortes de c_sped. Puede que seanecesario reducir la velocidad del recorridoy/o haga funcionar la segadora sobre el Areapor segunda vez.

• Para un corte muy pesado, reduzca el anchodel corte pasando parcialmente por encimadel lugar anteriormente cortado y sieguelentamente.

• Para un mejor ensacado del c_sped y para lamayoria de tas condiciones de corte, la velo-cidad del motor debe ajustarse a la posici6nde R_,PIDO.

• Cuando use una segadora con descargatrasera en c6sped hSmedo y pesado, losmontones del c6sped cortado puede que noentren en el recogedor de c6sped. Reduzcala velocidad del recorddo (vetocidad de em-puje) y/o haga funcionar la segadora sobre el&rea por segunda vez.

• Si queda una huella de cortes en el ladoderecho de una segadora con descargatrasera, siegue en la direcci6n en que giranlas manillas del reloj, solapando un pocopara recaudar los recortes en la pr6ximapasada.

• Los poros en los recogedores de c6sped detela pueden llenarse con mugre y polvo conel uso y los recogedores recaudar_n menosc6sped. Para evitar 6ste, rocie et recogedorcon la manguera de agua regularmente yd6jelo secarse antes de usarlo.

• Mantenga ta parte superior del motor, alred-edor del arrancador, despejada y sin recortesde c_sped y paja. Esto ayudar_ el flujo delaire del motor y extender& su duraci6n.

CONSEJOS PARA SEGAR Y ACOL-CHARIMPORTANTE: Para obtener el mejorrendimiento mantenga la caja de la segadorasin acumulacion de cesped y basura. Vea"LIMPIEZA" en la seccion de Mantenimento deeste manual.

• La cuchilla acolchadora especial va a volvera cortar los recortes de c_sped muchasveces, y los reduce en tamaSo, de modo quesi se caen en el c6sped se van a dispesarentre 6ste y no se van a notar. Tambi6n, elc_sped acolchado se va a deshacer r&pidam-ente entregando substancias nutritivas parael c6sped. Siempre acolche con la vetocidaddel motor (cuchilla) m_,s alta, pues asf seobtendr& la mejor acci6n de recorte de lascuchillas.

• Evite cortar el c_sped cuando est6 mojado.El c6sped mojado tiende a formar montonese interfiere con la acci6n de acolchado.La mejor hora para segar el c_sped estemprano en la tarde. A esa hora 6ste se hasecado y el Area reci6n cortada no quedar&expuesta al sol directo.

• Para obtener los mejores resultados, ajustela altura del corte de ta segadora de modoque _sta corte solamente el tercio superiorde las hojas de c_sped. En el caso de que elc_sped haya crecido demasiado, puede sernecesario el elevar la altura del corte parareducir el esfuerzo necesado para empujar lasegadora y para evitar sobrecargar el motor,dejando montones de recortes de c_sped.Para un c_sped muy pesado, reduzca el an-cho del corte pasando por encima del lugaranteriormente cortado y siegue lentamente.

• Ciertos tipos de c6sped y sus condicionespueden exigir que un &rea tenga que setacolchada por segunda vez para escondercompletamente los recortes. Cuando se hagael segundo corte, siegue atravesado (enforma perpendicular) a la pasada del primercorte.

• Cambie su patr6n de corte de semana asemana. Siegue de norte a sur una semanay luego cambie de este a oeste ta pr6ximasemana. Esto evitarA que el c_sped seenrede y cambie de direcci6n.

CUIDADO DE LA CUCHILLAPara obtener los mejores resultados, la cuchillade la segadora tienen que mantenerse afilada.Cambie la cuchilla doblada o dafiada.PARA REMOVER LA CUCHILLA1. Desconecte el alambre de la buj[a y p6ngalo en

donde no pueda entrar en contacto con 6sta.2. Haga descansar la segadora en su lado.

AsegSrese que el filtro de aire y que etcarburador queden mirando hacia ardba.

3. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora para evitar que lacuchilla gire cuando sete quite el perno.

AVISO: Proteja sus manos con guantes y/oenvuelva la cuchilla con una tela gruesa.4. Remueva el perno de la cuchilla gir&ndolo

en el sentido contrario en que giran lasmanillas del reloj.

5. Remueva la cuchilla y los art[culos de fer-reter[a adjuntadores (el perno, la arandelade seguridad y la arandela endurecida).

PARA CAMBIAR LA CUCHILLA1. Ponga la cuchilla en el adaptador de _sta

alineando los dos (2) agujeros en la cuchillacon tas salientes elevadas en el adaptador.

2. AsegSrese de que el borde de salida dela cuchilla (opuesto at borde afilado) est6hacia arriba hacia el motor.

3. Instale el perno de la cuchilla con la aran-dela de seguridad y la arandela endurecidaen el adaptador de la cuchilla y el ciguefiaL

4. Use un bloque de madera entre la cuchillay la caja de la segadora y apriete el pernode la cuchilla gir#,ndolo en el sentido en quegiran las manillas det reloj.

• La torsi6n para apretar recomendada es de35 - 40 pies libras.

IMPORTANTE: El perno de la cuchilla es tratadoa calo. Si es necesario sustituir los pernos,sustituirlos s61ocon pernos aprobados mostradosen lasecci6n Partes de Reparaci6n de este manual.

PARA AFILAR LA CUCHILLA

AVISO: No recomendamoselafilarlacuchilla-perosilo hace, asegQrese de que quede balanceada.Se tiene que tener cuidado de mantenerlabalanceada. Una cuchilla que no est& bal-anceada va a producir eventuatmente dafio enla segadora o en el motor.• La cuchilla puede afilarse con una lima o en

una rueda rectificadora. No trate de afilarlamientras se encuentra en la segadora.

• Para revisar el balance de la cuchilla, claveun clavo en una viga o en la pared. Dejealrededor de una pulgada de un clave rectoexpuesto. Ponga el agujero central de lacuchilla sobre la cabeza del clavo. Si tacuchilla est#, balanceada debe permaneceren la posici6n horizontal. Si cualquiera delos extremos de la cuchilla se mueve haciaabajo, afile et extreme pesado hasta que 6staquede balanceada.

RECOGEDOR DE ClaSPED• El recogedor de c6sped puede ser rociado

con el agua de la manguera pero tiene queestar seco cuando se vaya a usar.

• Revise su recogedor de c_sped a menudopara verificar siestA dafiado o deteriorado.Se va a desgastar con el use normal. Si senecesita cambiar el recogedor, cambielosotamente por uno que sea aprobado por elfabricante. D_ el nt]mero del modelo de lasegadora cuando Io ordene.

MOTORLUBRICACI(_NUse solamente aceite de detergente de alta cali-dad clasificado con la clasificaci6n SF-SJ de ser-vicio API. Seleccione la calidad de viscosidad SAEsegen su temperatura de operaci6n esperada.

AVISO: A pesar de que los aceites de multi-viscosidad (5W30, 10W30, etc.) mejoran elarranque en clima fr[o, estos aceites de mul-tiviscosidad van ha aumentar el consumo deaceite cuando se usan en temperaturas sobre32° E Revise el nivel del aceite del motor mas amenudo, para evitar un posible dafio en el mo-tor, debido a que no tiene suficiente aceite.Cambie el aceite despu6s de 25 horas deoperaci6n o per Io menos una vez al afio si lasegadora se utiliza menos 25 horas el afio.Revise el nivel del aceite del c&rter antes dearrancar el motor y despu6s de cada cinco (5)horas de uso continuado. Apriete el tap6n delaceite en forma segura cada vez que revise elnivel del aceite.

PARA CAMBIAR EL ACEITE DEL MOTOR

AMISO: Antes de inclinar la segadora para drenarel aceite, drene el tanque de combustible hacien-do correr el motor hasta que el tanque est6 vacio.1. Desconecte el alambre de la bujfa y

p6ngato de modo que no pueda entrar encontacto con 6sta.

2. Remueva la tapa del dep6sito del aceite;d6jela a un lade en una superficie limpia.

3. Incline la cortadora de c_sped por estecostado tal como se muestra y purgue elaceite en un recipiente id6neo. Mueva lasegadora de atrAs para adelante para re-mover todo el aceite que se haya quedadoatrapado dentro del motor.

DESVIADOR TRASEROSe proporciona un desviador trasero, adjuntoentre las ruedas traseras de su segadora, parareducir a un mfnimo ta posibilidad que objetossean lanzados hacia afuera de la parte traserade la segadora, en la posici6n en donde seencuentra el operador. Si se daSa el desviadordebe cambiarse.

PARA AJUSTAR EL MANGOEl mango puede ser montado a una posici6nalta o baja. Los agujeros de montaje en elmango inferior est#,n fuera del centro paralevantar y bajar el mango.1. Remueva el mango superior y todas las

partes atadas al mango inferior.2. Remueva las clavijas de horquilla de la

ctavija de montaje del puntal del mango.3. Apreite el mango inferior hacia dentro para

removerlo de las clavijas de montaje.4. Gire el mango inferior per encima para

levantar o bajar el mango.5. Vuelva a montar las clavijas de horquilla por

encima de las clavijas de montaje.6. Vuelva a montar el mango superior y todas

las partes removidas del mango inferior.

MOTOR

VELOCIDAD DEL MOTORLa vetocidad del motor ha sido ajustada en la f&-brica. No trate de aumentar la velocidad del motorpues se pueden producir lesiones personales. Sicree que el motor est& funcionando demasiador&pido o demasiado lento, Ileve su segadora amas con su centre de servicio Sears o con unotro centro de servicio cualificado.

CARBURADORSu carburador tiene un chorro principal fijo noajustable para controlar la mezcla. Si su motorno est#, funcionando en forma adecuada debidoa problemas que se sospecha vienen del carbu-rador, Ileve su segadora a contacto con su centrede servicio Sears o con un otro centro de serviciocuatificado para repararla y/o ajustarla.IMPORTANTE: Nunca manipule el reguladordet motor, el que ha side ajustado en la fAbricapara la velocidad del motor adecuada. Puedeser peligroso hacer funcionar el motor a unavelocidad por sobre el ajuste de alta velocidadde la f_,brica. Si cree que la velocidad alta regu-lada del motor necesita ajuste,contacto con sucentro de servicio Sears o con un otro centrede servicio cualificado, el que cuenta con elequipo adecuado y la experiencia para hacerlos ajustes necesarios.

Inmediatamente prepare su segadora para elalmacenamiento al final de cada temporada o sila unidad no se va a usar por 30 dias o mas.

SEGADORACuando se va a guardar la segadora por ciertoperiodo de tiempo, limpiela cuidadosamente,remueva toda la mugre, la grasa, las hojas, etc.GuArdeta en un Area limpia y seca.1. Limpie toda ta segadora (Vea "LIMPIEZA"

en ta secci6n de Mantenimento de estemanual).

2. Lubriquela segSn se muestra en la secci6nde Mantenimento de este manual.

2. Suelte los pernos de montaje del mangosuperior Io suficiente como para permitirque el mango superior se pueda doblarhacia atr_s.

IMPORTANTE: Cuando doble el mango para elalmacenamiento o el transporte, asegt_rese queIo doble segt]n se muestra o purde dafiar loscables de control.• Cuando prepare sus mangos a partir de

SISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLEIMPORTANTE: Es importante evitar quese formen depositos de coma en partesfundamentales del sistemade combustible talescome el carburador, el filtro del combustible,la mangura del combustible o en el estanquedurante el atmacenamiento. Los combustiblesmezclados con alcohol (conocido comegasohol o que tienen etanol o metanol)Pueden atraer humedad, Io que conduce a laseparacion y a la formaci6n de acidos duranteel almacenamiento. La gasolina acida puededanar el sistema de combustible de un motordurante el perido de almacenamiento.• Vaciar el dep6sito del carburante poniendo

en marcha el motor y dej&ndolo funcionarhasta que el carburante termine y elcarburador est6 vac[o.

• Nunca use los productos para limpieza delcarburador o del motor en el estanque decombustible pues se pueden producir dafiospermanentes.

• Use combustible nuevo la pr6xima temporada.AVlSO: El estabilizador de combustible es unaalternativa aceptable para reducir a un mfnimola formaci6n de dep6sitos de goma en el com-bustible durante el perfodo de almacenamiento.Agregue estabilizador a la gasolina en elestanque de combustible o en el envase para elalmacenamiento. Siempre siga la proporci6n demezcla que se encuentra en el envase del esta-bilizador. Haga funcionar el motor per Io menos10 minutos despu6s de agregar el estabilizador,para permitir que este Ilegue al carburador. Nodrene la gasolina del estanque de gasolina y elcarburador si se est& usando estabilizador decombustible.

del agujero de la bujfa en el cilindro.3. Tire la manilla de arranque lentamente unas

cuantas veces para distribuir el aceite.4. Vuelva a montar la nueva bujfa.

OTROS• No guarde la gasolina de una temporada a la

otra.• Cambie el envase de la gasolina si se emp-

ieza a oxidar. La oxidaci6n y/o la mugre ensu gasolina producir&n problemas.

• Si es posible, guarde su unidad en un recintocerrado y cQbrata para protegerla contra el

polvo y la mugre.• Cubra su unidad con un forro protector
