NCLR AmeriCorps staff will be available to meet with Affiliates interested in supporting an AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps is funded through the Corporation for National and Community Service and each year AmeriCorps offers eligible participants the opportunity to serve in their communities to address critical human needs. AmeriCorps Members currently serving at Affiliate locations are providing literacy tutoring, building capacity, teaching computer classes, and recruiting volunteers. Upon successfully completing their service AmeriCorps Members are eligible to earn an education award that can be applied to past, current, and future educational expenses. Interested Affiliates are invited to meet with NCLR AmeriCorps staff to learn about how they might bring the program to their community.

Teen pregnancy rates have fallen dramatically over the last 20 years, yet Latinas still have the highest rates of any group. Join the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy and NYU’s Center for Latino Adolescent and Family Health to learn about a family-based intervention developed for Latino families that has been shown to prevent early initiation of sex. This workshop will review teen birth data and provide information on the Families Talking Together program, including its delivery by promotores de salud.

An Untold Story: Abusive Policing and Lost Latino Lives POLICYRoom 2207

Incidents in Ferguson, Baltimore, and elsewhere have highlighted the severity of abusive policing practices on communities of color. Missing from the public discourse, however, are the stories of Hispanics who have lost their lives in such incidents. This workshop will address Latinos’ experiences with extreme policing and the steps necessary to restore trust between police and the Latino community. Attendees will hear from leaders in the field and receive background materials on Hispanics’ interactions with the criminal justice system.

Men Can Stop Rape is a violence prevention program that mobilizes young men to prevent sexual and dating violence. Its Men of Strength (MOST) Club provides young men with a structured and supportive space to build individualized definitions of masculinity that promote healthy relationships. Learn how young men can develop a positive personal sense of their masculinity and be allies in decreasing relationship violence.
