The much anticipated introduction of the new White Sisters to our fleet made 2003 an exciting year in our history, but now we’re looking forward to what promises to be an exceptional year when we take delivery of our brand new ship - Arcadia - in April 2005.

I am always delighted to welcome new ships to our UK fleet, but to be introducing a brand new superliner that has been specifically designed with the British cruise passenger in mind is a truly thrilling experience and one that has already created a buzz of anticipation amongst our customers, officers and crew, and the world of cruising generally.

The introduction of Arcadia signifies the next generation of superliners and represents the evolution of P&O Cruises, as we create the kind of holiday experience that will appeal to the modern day traveller.

Great destinations are to be expected from P&O Cruises, but it’s what we can offer on board that really sets us apart - and there will be an even more extensive range of experiences than ever before.

But this is no more than you’d expect from a company at the forefront of cruising and we are confident of our ability to meet the ever-changing needs of our customers, without straying from the values upon which P&O Cruises has built its reputation as Britain’s leading cruise line.

With Arcadia we have taken a bold step, which further develops our vision of the authentic cruise experience and which adds another unique dimension to the growing world of P&O Cruises.

We will be exploring more of this incredible new superliner in each issue of Arcadian, so read on and find out why Arcadia will be your dream destination.

On Wednesday 26 May 2004, a special group of dignitaries, key workers and other guests witnessed the ‘float out’ of Arcadia. The realisation of a dream for those who watched as the water slowly rose around her, for the first time she revealed her true class (and her pedigree) as a stunning 290 metre long, 85,000 ton superliner, destined to provide a new dimension to cruising.

After being formally blessed by the shipyard chaplain, a brass band played both the British and Italian national anthems as confetti and streamers showered upon the assembled guests to celebrate the beginning of Arcadia’s life on the water.

This is always a pivotal moment in a ship’s development, one of the most significant milestones before her sea trials. Arcadia is no longer a collection of massive steel blocks, no longer a giant industrial structure of dull steel and raw primer. Now she proudly displays her newly painted livery, her gleaming white hull and distinctive buff funnel. To see Arcadia actually on the water is the culmination of many months of effort by many people, and gives a sense of what she will actually look like at sea.

The events at the Fincantieri shipyard were highly moving for all those privileged to witness them. And it seems fitting that our newest and most exciting ship should be built in Venice, this most romantic of cities, her home until she joins the P&O Cruises fleet in April 2005.

Carrying nearly 2000 passengers (and 869 crew) she will be the largest cruise ship ever to be built exclusively for British passengers. Being more spacious means more flexibility in layout, so Arcadia will provide new opportunities for passengers to enjoy their cruise in the way that they choose.

Arcadia shows her colours on the water

Once Arcadia was afloat Sabrina Dunkerly, one of the youngest female cadets in the P&O Cruises fleet, welded a newly minted £1 sterling silver coin under the ship’s mast. Sabrina then marked the occasion by breaking a bottle of champagne on Arcadia’s bow to celebrate the ship’s first venture into water.

Arcadia is a very special kind of ship, offering a new dimension to cruising for passengers who prefer an environment that truly inspires - one where they can choose to do more or less as they please.

A fresh perspective Arcadia is British through and through. Yet as you join the ship you may spot some unusual details: such as four different styles of leg on a single table. A design feature that hints that this ship will be unlike any other. The same attention to detail that you would expect from P&O Cruises, of course, and the same extraordinary level of comfort and service, but with a style of her own. Arcadia is designed to appeal to the more contemporary traits of her passengers.

With so many different ‘spaces’ on board, intended for a variety of purposes at all times of day and night, clever and careful interior design will be a vital factor in the Arcadia experience. A number of experts have been recruited to turn our new cruising vision into the reality that will fulfil and exceed passenger expectations.

There is no single theme that has been followed in the overall Arcadia ‘concept’. Each area has been designed to serve aparticular purpose, but also flows comfortably into adjacentspaces. Colours are chosen to support needs and reflect moods. Lighting has been selected to change subtly throughout the day.Fabrics and floor-coverings have been selected or commissioned to convey the right ambience.

The Atrium, for example, although undeniably impressive, is unexpectedly simple in design. There is no giant sculpture but instead a dramatic, shimmering, two-tone curtain that falls over three decks. The effect is elegant without being over-stated: using a subtle and delicate colour palette.

Arcadia will have a truly unique and stimulating ambient art collection that includes the work of painters, sculptors and artists in a wide variety of materials including metal, glass, stone, ceramics and textiles.

Getting the ambience just right

The Orchid restaurant achieves a different sort of impact, hinting at a fusion of Asian and Oriental culture, with warm, neutral tones and exciting materials contrasted with the occasional burst of bright orange.

The largest floating art gallery in Britain

From the giant 2.2m high stainless steel John Ashworth sculpture over the main pool to the 2,609 limited edition prints in the cabins, Arcadia will have a truly unique and stimulating art collection.

Specially commissioned art plays a vital role on board Arcadia, adding to the cruising experience by enhancing the environmental features.

Nicola Elstone, of Elstone Hayes Associates, has commissioned the entire art collection for Arcadia. The ship will house a showcase for the very best of British art and interior design today. Artwork has been commissioned from the length and breadth of Britain, from the Shetland Islands to Land’s End.

DesignTeam is a consultancy of interior architects with huge experience in creating schemes for cruise ships, as well as for hotel, leisure and retail environments. Their specifi c cruise ship experience means they have the specialist knowledge required to address the intensive demands placed on them, both in terms of all the regulations - and the needs of passengers. Their philosophy is to “believe that anything is possible and make it happen”. They have certainly made it happen on Arcadia.

Navigation is a key consideration (as you’d expect!)Different areas have been designed and named to reflect their particular purpose and atmosphere. Signage has been developed to complement the spaces and the mood the architects have created. Lenco International is the specialist company charged with the typographic design and ensuring the signs work for each individual space.

SMC Design performs a similar role, adding their own experience of cruise ship design to the special challenges of Arcadia. L’Épicure for example, was designed by SMC to create a richly elegant atmosphere, appropriate to a fi ne dining experience. Crisp detailing is complemented by a warm palette of colours that includes blue upholstery, marble hues of cream and brown, metallic golds, silver, bronze and brushed brass working with each other to help create a sumptuous but relaxing atmosphere. Fine wood veneers are contrasted with fabric-lined walls. Special decorative lights provide a warm amber ambience and include sharp blue crystalline detailing.

We have matched Arcadia to those people whose personalities best suit her unique character. For we all knowonly too well how important individual officers are to the enjoyment of your cruise. While you sail with them, their distinctive personalities are almost as important as their particular skills and experience - most of whom are P&O Cruises through and through.

Just as we pay minute attention to every detail of her design and fitting out, so we have chosen a senior team that will help make the most of Arcadia and ensure that your cruise is one of the finest you’ll ever experience.

Your new captain and his officers are ready to welcome you aboard.

Captain Stephen Burgoine Captain

Making sure an Arcadia cruise is the fi nest cruise

“I’m really looking forward to taking command of Arcadia. I’ve served on over a dozen ships with P&O Cruises (six as Captain) and it’s clear she will be quite different to command than any of the others. We’ll be on the edge of a new cruise revolution - it’s great to be part of it.

Running a ship is a complex business, with my role not too dissimilar to that of a Chief Executive on dry land! Apart from the obvious maritime duties, I am responsible for nearly 2000 passengers and 869 crew. Above all, I’m committed to making sure all our passengers experience something that meets their high expectations and I relish the challenge of developing new schedules.”

Currently in command of Oceana, Captain Burgoine is a Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation.

He is married to Kathy, whom he met when she was a passenger on his fi rst passenger ship Chusan, over 30 years ago. They have two daughters Sophie and Rosie and any spare time he has is spent on DIY, golf, classic cars and supporting his local church.

As we look forward to the fi nal delivery of Arcadia, we each have different expectations of what she will mean to us. But a select few already know that Arcadia will play an important part in their lives. Even before she leaves the shipyard, the ship’s senior offi cers are preparing to take up their new positions.

Arcadian 9

Page 9: P&O Cruises

“With 38 years service on P&O Cruises ships, I suppose I can claim considerable experience! But I never cease to be amazed by developments in our ships. Not just in technical terms, but in the innovation of facilities and overall opportunities for passengers. Once again, with Arcadia it looks like P&O Cruises is making an inspired move to create a new kind of cruise experience for passengers who want something a little different.”

Captain Richard Fennelow has served on dozens of ships, latterly as Captain of Adonia.

He is married to Margaret and lives in Sheffi eld. They have two children, James and Victoria. He likes impressionist art and collecting antiques.

“I ensure that everything runs like clockwork, so it’s better if no one ever thinks about me being on board! After all, there’s no roadside rescue service in the middle of the ocean. But apart from maintaining the engines, the power and lighting, there are things like managing the desalination plant to provide additional fresh water. I am standing-by with Arcadia as she is being built, so I know intimately all her quirks, whims and ways.”

Paul joined P&O Cruises in 1971 as a cadet and has served on many ships. He stood by the construction of both Orianaand Aurora and has now relocated to Italy on a permanent basis to stand bythe build of Arcadia.

He is a Fellow of the Institute ofMarine Engineering, Science andTechnology and lives in Spalding, Lincolnshire with his Canadian wife Marilyn whom he met while cruising in Alaska. They have a son, Scott, and in his spare time, he likes golf, gardening and four-by-four off-road driving.

“My job is to oversee all the ‘hotel services’ on Arcadia. All the accommodation, the linen, the foodand the drink, the crockery, everything - quite a challenge for a ‘cruising resort’ with so many people to cater for.”

Born and educated in South Africa, his career began as Food Services Manager for South African Broadcasting Corporation and South African Airways, before joining Sun International Hotel Corporation, where he became General Manager in 1988. He joined P&O Cruises in 1994 and has served on Victoria, Oriana, Aurora, Oceana and Adonia.

Patrick is married to Linda and lives in the north of Scotland where he enjoys walking, golfi ng and following international cricket.

“As Staff Captain, my role will be mainly to run the deck department but I’ll work closely with the other members of the team to ensure that every passenger is happy, that every member of the crew enjoys their work and does it to the best of their ability, and that all our operations run as smoothly as possible.”

Keith has been with P&O Cruises since 1990 and is currently serving as Staff Captain on Oceana.

His home is in Northern Ireland with his two children, John and Holly. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, classical music and walking his dog, Harvey.

Arcadia means you can experience all the wonders of the

entertainment world - some virtually

24/7 - without ever leaving the ship.

Quite simply, when it comes to high quality leisure time, Arcadia is whatever you want her to be. You can do it all or do nothing at all. You decide, then you indulge.

In fact, it’s time to forget all you knew about cruising. Arcadia is the largest ever superliner purposely designed for British passengers, although the differences do not end there. She is also a child-free zone. Which means we can spoil our grown up guests. People like you, perhaps?

And spoilt for choice you will be. From the moment you step aboard Arcadia, expect to have your expectations exceeded. There are places to socialise, party or enjoy your own space. Whatever your mood, Arcadia accommodates it.

To say there are 14 brilliant bars, at least half a dozen superb places to eat, two beautiful pools, five jacuzzis, shops, a 3-tier theatre, casino, nightclub, library, cyb@centre and so on, simply misses the point...

Just pack ‘your’ imagination

Page 11: P&O Cruises

12

With a fully interactive dance floor, lighting and sound systems to match, you’ll want to be the star of the show!

With three tiers and over 700 luxuriously comfortable seats, this sophisticated theatre, equipped with all the latest audio-visual technologies, can provide you with a complete cruise of unforgettable experiences. One extra touch is the fact that you can have a seat with a personal drinks table and take refreshments all evening, while you are being entertained.

We’ve provided a blank canvas on which you can paint your own ‘cruise lifestyle’.

The Palladium

Every night we raise the curtain on Broadway and West End produced stage spectaculars, including Arcadia’s unique signature production, presented only at The Palladium. From classics to comedy, solo virtuoso recitals to silver screen movies, bands to big haired 70’s boogie, The Palladium offers you the perfect night out, in.

Imagine your favourite uptown bar. Cool, contemporary and refi ned where everyone wants to be seen. A place where genuine style will never, but never, go out of fashion. Intermezzo is all this and so much more besides.

Experience at fi rst hand all that Mother Nature has to offer, from the classic but always stunning sunsets to shoals of silver-sided fl ying fi sh cutting through the waves. In fact, The Crow’s Nest is situated just above the bridge - but your outlook is better than theirs! So, you’ll get a real life, real time wide screen view of the world.

The Crow’s Nest puts the class back into

classic cruising.

All that said, you might prefer a little more ‘action! ’ Perhaps a long, cool pre-dinner cocktail, listening to a selection of jazz standards played on a baby grand? Or maybe you’d prefer to take a cocktail and step out onto the teak observation deck where the welcome shade and cool breezes work their magic?

Either way The Crow’s Nest is the perfect place to gather in a party mood or fi nd a few intimate moments. This cool, sophisticated bar works on every level. It should; it simply is a cut above.

When you’re seeking an excuse to dress for dinner (as if !) the Meridian Restaurant offers you the perfect one. You can indulge in world class cuisine, British classic dishes with surprising fl ourishes and everything served with panache.

Great eating can be like great dressing - presentation is everything. But don’t forget that while it’s important to

follow the required etiquette, there’s always room for those little individual touches.

So while the inspiration for the Meridian Restaurant’s decor comes from the British love of nature and the countryside, the carpet pays small homage to Claude Monet’s Giverny.

In the last couple of decades dining out in Britain has been revolutionised. Aboard Arcadia, the revolution continues. We’ve combined the best of home, with all that’s unique, innovative and inspirational from the world’s fi nest culinary infl uences. Superbly prepared dishes and succulent ingredients combine with legendary P&O Cruises service.

Arcadian 15

Whatever your mood or body clock time, you’ll fi nd a menu to match both on Arcadia. From busy, buzzing and bustling informal atmospheres to intimate, dinners for two, we’ll cater exclusively for you.

With no children on board, everything’s easier (and quicker) to organise. And if you’ve left your little ones behind, perhaps you can be rather more adventurous, go a bit further afi eld and squeeze in more than might otherwise have been possible. Our on board experts will give you all the advice you need before arrival, to help you make the most of your time ashore.

As the year unfolds, Arcadia will embark on her full programme of cruises. But fi rst we have planned a special series of Maiden Cruises for you to look forward to.

Arcadia will cruise to all of your favourite destinations (and some less familiar places in-between). But beyond all the attractions on board and the obvious benefi ts of watching the world go by as you sail between ports, cruising on Arcadia means you can do even more.

It’s not only where

you’re going, but it’s how

you get there!

To make the most of being at sea, over three-quarters of the cabins enjoy stunning views, with either a picture window or a balcony. And you have a greater opportunity to choose a balcony on Arcadia, for she has more cabins with balconies than any of our ships.

There is a wide variety of cabin types to suit different requirements and budgets - from standard twins up to palatial suites. And, whatever cabin you choose, you can be sure that your cabin steward will keep yours shipshape throughout your stay.

Make yourself at home and enjoy the views

A space designed around you We have designed Arcadia’s cabins to be lived in and enjoyed rather than talked about. But although good design is often unobtrusive, you may like to know something about how we have achieved the cool atmospherics of Arcadia’s cabins.

Light colours have been chosen to help create a sense of space and airiness, with fresh greens and corals providing a light-hearted accent in most cabins. In the suites a scheme of purples and coppers has been introduced, with highlights of light blue and gold. Pale beech veneers match sandy-coloured carpets, and special desk and tub chairs have been commissioned, as well as curtains and bedspreads unique to P&O Cruises.

Each of our cabins is carefully designed to provide a stylish, comfortable and practical base that you can call home for the duration of your cruise. We have selected furniture, furnishings, lighting and colour to create a subtle, relaxing, environment. A place that is more than a hotel room in which to dream about your next destination, and is as much somewhere to relax quietly in private or to entertain new-found friends.

Limited edition prints by artists of the British Brotherhood of Ruralists movement have been chosen to add to your enjoyment.

You may wish to have breakfast al fresco in the morning sun. Or perhaps you would prefer to sit quietly staring into the blue infinity. In the evening, you may choose to order a romantic dinner à deux, or use your balcony to entertain some guests, adding another dimension to your temporary home. We’ll be surprised if you’re happy to leave.

Make yourself at home and enjoy the views “...wherefore art thou, Romeo?”

The only thing better than a sea view is your own balcony.

A private, but dynamic space

to enjoy as you please.
