Welcome to a new school year in 2017! This year we will be celebrating our sesquicentenary and our year will be full of special events commemorating 150 years of public education at Bowral. A particular welcome to our many new families; we are thrilled that you have chosen to join our Bowral Public School family and we hope that your educational experience is a positive one. As a special sesquicentenary gift to all students our wonderful P&C has paid for every student to receive a commemorative school badge. We hope that all children will wear their badge every day this year, with pride. Badges will be issued as soon as classes are permanent. We formed 23 classes this week, based on our anticipated numbers. I have no doubt that we will gain some new enrolments and lose some families who will have moved during the holidays, as such classes will be temporary for the first two weeks and parents and students should anticipate that some moves may be made. This year we are changing the way classes are named. All classes will be named after a colour shade....for example our kindergarten classes are shades of red/pink and will be called Kindergarten Rose, Kindergarten Raspberry and Kindergarten Ruby. We welcome Miss Jennifer Cousemacker to our school as our newest permanent member of staff. Miss Cousemacker will be teaching Year 3. A detailed list of teachers and classes will be outlined in our next newsletter (which will be in 2 weeks time). Last term we trialled fortnightly newsletters and this will continue this term. BUBBLES AT BRADMAN As a way of welcoming new families and catching up with our "old" families I would like to welcome all parents to a social function, Thursday evening 16 February at The International Cricket Hall of Fame. This will be the 4th year that we have hosted Bubbles at Bradman, it is a lovely way to "kick-off" our year. We would love to see as many parents as possible, to say hello, meet our staff and relax over a glass of "bubbles". Please see the attached invitation, I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible next week. ALLERGIES AND PEANUT PRODUCTS We have some students who suffer from food allergies at our school and as such, we ask that peanuts and foods containing peanuts be kept at home. This includes peanut butter sandwiches. Thank you for helping keep all of our children safe by ensuring that these types of foods remain at home. UNIFORMS AND HATS Congratulations parents! Our students looked wonderful this week in their school uniforms. It was fantastic to see so many students in black school shoes and wearing hats. Labelling all of your children's belongings will help them be returned to you when they are inevitably left behind on some occasion. ANAPHYLAXIS AND ASTHMA PLANS

If your child suffers from anaphylaxis or asthma they must have an updated plan which is signed by your family doctor.

These forms MUST be completed every 12 months and are available from our school office.

UPDATED FORMS

This week we will be sending home forms which need to be completed and returned to school. These forms are

completed each year and we request that every child return them as soon as possible. Children will not be able to

participate in local excursions or be included in school photos or publicity until the relevant forms are returned. Thank

you for returning these forms as soon as possible.

SCRIPTURE

Last year we had some children changing scripture classes mid-year. To avoid confusion, we are asking parents to

update their scripture preferences for your children now. Children will then be expected to remain in that scripture

class unless we receive written notification of the requested change.

Our religious education teachers (scripture teachers) are all volunteers who give up their time to teach our students.

We appreciate their dedication and want to support them by ensuring classes remain as stable as possible.

SKOOLBAG APP

Our school app is available to be downloaded onto all Smartphones. We will be using the app more and more this year

and hope that parents, too will make good use of it. The app is available from the app store…simply look for Bowral

Public School.

PARENT TEACHER NIGHTS

This term there will be two opportunities for you to meet with your child's class teacher.

We will have our usual meet the teacher evening early in the term where your child's class teacher will outline the year

ahead. We will also hold parent-teacher interviews, held in Week 8 and 9 of this term. This will enable you to meet with

your child's teacher at a one-to-one meeting to discuss your son or daughter's academic progress. There will be more

details in the next newsletter.

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Our annual swimming carnival will be held Friday17 February at the Bowral swimming pool. All notes should be

returned to class teachers as soon as possible as well as payment and the blue medical forms. More information to

follow.

YEAR 6 CAMP

Next week, Week 3 at school, we will see Year 6 head off to camp. This is a wonderful opportunity for Year 6 to get to

know each other and their new teachers and enjoy recreation and social activities in the beautiful setting of Narrabeen

Sport and Recreation from Wednesday 8 February to Friday 10 February 2017. Please ensure that all paperwork is

completed in a timely manner and payments made this week. Any parent who is having difficulty making this payment

should contact the class teacher as soon as possible.

It is exciting to be returning for 2017, a special year which will mark 150 years of education at Bowral Public School. Our P&C will begin the year by providing a cup of tea to welcome new Kindergarten parents this week, and we have a number of other fundraising and social events already planned for the year. In this sesquicentenary year, we would like to encourage all members of our school community to join in our activities and especially invite new families to come along and meet other parents.

Also, to everyone who showed such passion and enthusiasm for our outdoor play spaces at the end of last year, we would love to see you come along and get involved. Our first meeting for 2017 will be held on Monday 20 February at 6.30pm in the school library. These meetings are relaxed and friendly and are concluded within two hours. At our AGM in March the executive positions will be vacated and there will also be the opportunity to be nominated to join our sub committees. Meredith Wakeman P&C President

News from the Beehive . . . . . . . Welcome back to our returning families, and welcome to our sesquicentenary Kindergarten class and those new to our school. The Beehive is buzzing already with a hive of activity (ok I will stop with the puns) to have full canteen service from this week. For those new to the school, our canteen is run by the P&C who employ the lovely Adriana (our Canteen Manager) and the lovely Sue to provide healthy, nutritious (but delicious) food for our kids. We pride ourselves on the fact pretty much everything is made from scratch right down to the passatta we use for our pasta sauce and pizza base... If you didn’t already know, we are a not for profit canteen and can keep costs low by being staffed mainly by volunteers. Any funds we raise go directly back to the school to benefit our school community. That’s why volunteers are crucial to the canteen. We just can’t operate without you! Thank you to those already on our volunteer list who have filled some of our empty spots for the first few weeks. Please check below for the days you are volunteering. Where there are VACANCY we still need volunteers so if you would like to get involved, or to be included in our email distribution list for information and for last minute availability requests, or have any questions generally, please contact me on [email protected] or [email protected] There are a few small changes to the menu for Term 1. Gluten free bread is now a standard option and we have introduced salad boxes as a lunch item as well. We will continue with the popular ‘Apple Slinky Friday’ and hummus and carrot cups will also be a regular over the counter option..... A copy of the menu is attached.

Reusable (and washable) lunch bags in black with a variety of fetching trim colours can be purchased from the canteen for $10. Please note the canteen will not be open on Friday 17 February as it’s the school swimming carnival. The first canteen committee meeting for 2017 will be held next Thursday 9 February in the school staffroom at 2.30pm (before pick up). You are very welcome to come along (please sign in at the office first). Hope to see you in the Beehive soon.
