Before we introduced our team of student leaders, I shared with our assembly how we arrived at the decision of student leaders. Earlier this term we spoke to those Year 6 students who were interested in applying for student leadership positions and the opportunities that were available. We spoke about the role that student leaders play in our school community and what kind of characteristics and attributes they need to possess. We spoke about the type of behaviours and attitudes we expect to see in our senior students as student role models, particularly our leaders. We also discussed how people deal with disappointment and how they would respond if they were not successful with their leadership application. As in past years, we had 18 leadership positions available. This year we had many applications. The vast majority of our students wrote excellent applications, demonstrating a thorough understanding of our expectations. A number of our students were then invited to have a conversation with the school leadership team. Our students in years 4-6 also met in their house meetings and voted for their preferred candidates as house captains. So after this process we are pleased to announce the following students to our 2021 student leadership positions: School Captain: Ivy Mulholland School Captain: Aarav Shah SRC Captains Aaliyah Carver, Arnav Dhiman, Ava Norton, Bhavia Patel, Emma Donnellan, Lucas Berry, Hayley McCandless, Shuao Tan House Captain – Botanic: Iremide Ajayi House Captain – Botanic: Justin Scott House Captain – Creekwood: Katherine Lin House Captain – Creekwood: Cody Mackay House Captain – Parkway: Nikki Martinovic House Captain – Parkway: Thanmay Shajin House Captain – Waterford: Ruby Blacka House Captain – Waterford: Joshua Webel Congratulations to our student leaders and I look forward to working with you during 2021. On Monday we conducted our annual House Cross Country event for all students in years Prep to Six. Through their participation, all the students contributed points to their house total. It was great to see students decked out in their house colours, this created a sense of fun and comradery. In addition to the house competition, our cross country was aligned with School Fun Runs as a fundraising event. I would like to sincerely thank our school community for embracing this event, as the event has raised a substantial amount already. I look forward to sharing with our school community the final figure raised and how the funds can be used to support our students learning and development. I would like to thank Mrs Drew and Mr Seton for their organisation, and also the parents who came along to support their children. From this cross-country carnival, we will also be selecting our inter-school team, which will compete and represent PLPS at the District cross-country next term. Last Friday, our year 5 students and staff returned from another very successful camp at Beechworth. Although weary from their activities, the four -day camp once again provided a variety of experiences for our children in one of Victorias most beautiful and authentic historical towns. On behalf of our students and parents, I would like to extend my appreciation to our staff for their commitment and support of your children. Ms Gilmour, Ms Kruse, Ms Weston, Mr Krug, Ms Douglas, Ms Johnstone, Ms Drew, Ms Lowndes, Ms Thomas, Ms Dickson and Ms Bould all assisted the students to ensure they had an enjoyable time, whilst participating in learning about their classroom Inquiry Unit. I had the pleasure of joining our students and staff in Beechworth on Wednesday. I thoroughly enjoyed the many stories the students shared with me as well as participating in some of the experiences. It was wonderful to hear the positive feedback I received from the tour guides and our staff about the manner in which our students engaged in the experiences, the prior knowledge they shared, together with the respectful and courteous way they conducted themselves whilst interacting with the public. Well done to everyone involved with the camp. Thank you to our school community for the Easter raffle donations and to our PFA members who have done an incredible job putting together the hampers. Photos of these are later in our newsletter. If you would like the chance to take one of the wonderful hampers home, please have your tickets returned to the school office no later than 9am on Wednesday, March 31 st . With school holidays fast approaching, I would like to advise all families that OSHClub is providing their vacation care program for our students at PLPS. Please note that only students who are enrolled at our school will be eligible to participate in the vacation care program. Parents who are currently using the service will receive information from OSHClub.
