PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Greetings to my fellow historical society members! Spring has sprung across our beautiful township even though Mother Nature did her best to try to trick us. I want to take a moment and thank each and every one of you for your contributions to our humble society whether they be monetary or precious time volunteered. Without you, what we do would not be possible, and our history would soon be lost.

NEW ACQUISITION!

At a March 23rd, online-only auction of a local estate, many lots of Gap &area memorabilia were sold. The Society was able to acquire a framed35” x 35” original Gap 250th Anniversary Banner/Flag from the 1951celebration. Are any more of these known to be out there?

Unfortunately, we were NOT able to obtain the prize item of the sale –an original cast-iron Gap Train Station sign – measuring approx. 17” x

27”. This sign was in the possessionof Steve Barr and his family for manyyears – dating back to his grandfather’s time. A sign like this also hung from the porch of the Rutter House for many years by the Gap Clock Tower. The sign sold for $1870 (including the 10% buyer’s premium). Anidentical 2nd sign has been on display at the restored Christiana Railroad Station. Perhaps one day one of these signs will make its way into our Historical Society’s archives …

Information Anyone?

This ca. 1920s photo (on the right) shows, I believe, one Lewis Foulk, who – according to “A History of Salisbury Township” by Joan Lorenz –ran a restaurant with John Eshelman, located between the Walker-Ebyblock and the Gap National Bank building. The building was razed in1931. I also believe that the photo was taken across Newport Ave. fromthe old Gap Post Office building.

Any verification of the location or any biographical details of Mr. Foulkwould be appreciated! Contact Brett [email protected]

SALISBURY TOWNSHIP IS LOSING ITS OLD STRUCTURES

Many are the pre-Revolutionary buildings in this township.Unfortunately, the price of renovations and repair is such a burden to most that it is often easier to tear down rather than try to save. In the past year or two several of these structures have been sold: The Mansion House on Strasburg Road in Gap; the old Sam Adams Inn on Lincoln Highway across from Brackbill Road; and the recently sold Sunnyside [some photos are included in the newsletter]. Another sale was the 270-year-old White Horse Inn, reportedly the oldest continuously operating tavern in the county at the time of the sale in 2016. The township and the county have reason to celebrate the new owner for it has been purchased by someone who is trying to respect its gloried past.

NOTE: As you wander the local by-ways, you can help both local and county historical societies discover those places in danger. At least we can photograph the building and record the history before that building is gone. We know it is not realistic to preserve them all. “A picture is worth a thousand words” if we have nothing else.

ONE ROOM PUBLIC SCHOOL HISTORY - Update

As I continue collecting stories about the public one room schools which educated the students of this township not too long ago, the Society has gained a great many photos, year books and other items. These items not only add interest to the intended book but also provide genealogical connections that we can usein the future. I recently was able to borrow an 1899 class roster for Gap Primary School – Miss Laura Good was the teacher to 49 students in 8 grades that year! The next year she moved over to Roseneath on Umbletown Rd. and had only 22 students in 8 grades!

These past 15 months of interviewing have been a blast! I will continue to accept stories by phone and email, and photos by mail as we begin the next phase. Now the hard work begins: sorting the photos, coordinating the stories, and planning a reception for the many that provided material and memories. The book progresses and this part needs the help of many. --Leona Baker

CIVIL WAR BOOK – Update

“THE CIVIL WAR VETERANS WHO LIVED IN AND/OR WERE BURIED IN SALISBURY TOWNSHIP, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA”

The Salisbury Township Civil War history book, containing five chapters plus appendix, is still a work in progress. We are working hard to have the book sent to the printer sometime later this year.

In part, the book will contain in-depth biographies for over 400 Civil War Veterans. Each will contain a complete life history of the veteran and will include photos of some veterans and newspaper articles (obituary notices, tragic deaths, court cases, other articles, etc.). We have found letters written by several of the veterans during the Civil War and in a few cases letters sent to those with biographies in the book.

SIGN-BOARDS OF THREE CROWNS TAVERN & WATERLOO TAVERN

Benjamin West painted many tavern signs in the vicinity of Philadelphia, among them in 1771 that of the Three Crowns, a noted hostelry that stood onthe King’s Highway in Salisbury Township, Lancaster County. Thisneighborhood was partly settled by English emigrants, and the old tavern waskept by a Tory of the deepest dye. The sign-board still bears the marks of the

hostile bullets of the Continental Army, and theproprietor came near sharing the bullets with thesign. This Three Crowns sign was removed in 1816to the Waterloo Tavern, kept by a relative of the oldlandlord. The Waterloo Tavern was originally theBull’s Head, and was kept by a Revolutionaryofficer. Both sides of the Three Crowns sign-board are shown here.

[By tradition West also painted the sign-board of the old Hat Tavern [located about two miles east of Cross Keys (Intercourse)]. This was kept by Widow Caldwell in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, on the old Philadelphia road.]

MEMORIAL DAY

In the years immediately following the Civil War, oneway Americans sought to remember the war dead wasby holding “decoration days”—days on which theywould gather to decorate the graves of those whodied in the conflict.

The first official observance took place on May 30, 1868. That year, 183 cemeteries in 27 states celebrated Decoration Day, and observance only grew in the years that followed. By 1890, all the northern states had made it an official state holiday. The southern states began celebrating Decoration Day after World War I, when it changed from honoring Civil War dead to honoring the American dead of all wars.

Memorial Day, as we know it, came about in 1967, when Decoration Day was renamed Memorial Day. In 1968, it was permanently moved from May 30 to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend.

—Let us pause this Memorial Day to honor and remember all of those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that freedom may continue to ring throughout our Nation.

GENEALOGY CORNER

We get many requests on ourwebsite from researchers whoare looking for us to supplymuch needed connections. There are some questions that we can answer, and if it is of general interest we will print it here as an interesting tidbit for you. If you can help provide information or if you need some help with your research, please email Leona Baker at [email protected] or at 717-442-4071. Please remember to leave yourcontact information including email if you have it.

Over the past few years the Society has frequently been called upon to do genealogy research for many whose ancestors came from, or had ties to, Salisbury Township. While we do our best to follow the trail, often our files do not have the answers and we can only offer the seeker links to other sources and hope those bear fruit. There is no charge for the many hours spent on our in-house research. Due to the amount of time involved with the research, donations are always appreciated.

THE MANSION HOUSE IN GAP

Located on the Strasburg Pike, just west of the bridge across the railroad tracks, stands a stone building with a colorful history. The land was originally granted to William Kennedy by William Penn’s agents in early 1700. The four-story limestone house and out-buildings were erected by Colonel Joseph Baker in 1838. When he was appointed as General Superintendent of the Philadelphia and Columbia R.R., he sold the property. Over the next century, the house served as a hotel, a bank, a law office, an undertaking establishment and livery stables.

The home was originally designed with the front facingthe railroad tracks. The fire places had side cabinets forfire arm storage…..the warmth kept the gun powderdry. Large windows in the second story room facingeast had window seats and panels opening to a secondtier porch. James Buchanan spoke from this porchduring one of the great political meetings held in Gapduring the campaign for the Presidency in 1856.

In 1946 the house was remodeled by the then ownersto face the Strasburg Pike, fireplaces and staircaseswere removed in the four-story side. Central heat wasinstalled and hard wood floors were laid. At that timeno-one thought about preserving history.

Now more than 50 years have passed and the present façade and interior are the “History” we value. The house was recently sold as a home and begins a new chapter.
