SANTOS Tour Down Under
Best Dressed Town Awards Key to the success of the Southern Barossa hosting the Hostworks Stage 1 of the 2016 Santos Tour Down Under in January was the incredible job done by the many very generous and passionate local volunteers who put in an incredible ef-fort to show off our region to the world by dressing up our towns. This year Lyndoch was awarded the Gold Winner with a prize of $3,000 and Williamstown the Silver winner with a prize of $1,000. The awards will be presented at 10 am Sunday 1 May on the Village Green. All of the TDU volunteers are invited to come along. This is a great follow up to Williamstown winning the gold award last year.
Red Cross Fundraising Breakfast.
The Lyndoch Branch of Australia Red Cross will be holding a Egg and Bacon Roll Breakfast on the Lyndoch Village Green 9 – 11 am Sunday 1 May to raise funds for Red Cross. Come and share breakfast with your friends on the Green. Gourmet Egg and Bacon Roll, tea and coffee for $5.
BAROSSA OPENS DOORS TO CHINA
The lucrative Chinese tourism market will be the focus of a trade delegation to Shandong province next week. Mayor Bob Sloane will join the delegation of council representatives, diplomats, business and tourism leaders in a bid to open doors for South Australian business in China. Shandong is the third strongest economy in China and the outbound mission will reach a potential audience of 1000 Chinese businesses and investors. Mr Sloane said the goal was to increase tourism visitation, export opportunities and channels for inbound investment in years to come. “We know food and wine are key drivers for why people travel into regions,” said Mr Sloane. “We want to build relationships that will not only attract international visitors to the Barossa, but encourage return visitation.” Three Barossa wineries will also be represented, Pernod Ricard Winemakers - Australia, Yalumba Wines and Seppeltsfield Wines, alongside Barossa Fine Foods.
$100,000 in playground upgrades for Barossa Kids will love the outdoors even more with the installation of $100,000 worth of play equipment across the region. The equipment will be installed in coming months at Georgetown Reserve in Lyndoch, Jubilee Avenue and Memorial Reserve in Angaston, Homburg Street in Tanunda, Bethany Reserve and Coulthard Reserve in Nuriootpa. Council will also install its first Expression Swing at Tanunda Recreation Park, enabling an adult and child to face one another and have an eye-to-eye experience. The new additions will replace outdated or non-compliant equipment, creating an engaging environment for children to indulge their sense of adventure and imagination. Mayor Bob Sloane described it as a significant investment in community health and wellbeing. “Playgrounds are not only places for children to play – they provide socialisation and recreation opportunities and are an important gathering place for people of all ages,” he said. “Importantly, these upgrades will meet Australian standards for playground equipment so our children are kept safe as well as engaged in fun, physical activity.” The upgrades were identified as part of a regional audit of play equipment and were included in Council’s 2015-16 budget, with installation expected to be completed this financial year.

LYNDOCH HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The unveiling of the Barossa William Light Monument at the Society’s January meeting was a very successful occasion with those present enjoying the hospitality of Nelly and Guido Auchli. Since the occasion the Society has been approached by residents of Lyndoch requesting a visit to the property be organised to see the statue on its marble base. The Society has decided to arrange a visit during History Month for Sunday 15th May at 2.00 p.m. Anyone interested should contact the Secretary, Anne Hausler, (phone 85245002).
The next meeting of the Historical Society will be held in the Meeting Room at the rear of the Lyndoch Library on Sunday 24th April at 2.00 p.m. The topic for the occasion is the “Jubilee of Federation Re-visited”. The events that took place in Lyndoch in 1951 will be discussed accompanied by a Power Point display. Please bring a plate of afternoon tea to share at the conclusion of the meeting. Anyone interested is welcome to attend.
Newspapers of the day covering the Vintage Festival reported the Director-general of the Jubilee Celebrations (Lt-Gen F.H. Berryman) had praised the Festival for giving tremendous impetus to the jubilee celebrations and influencing other Australian country towns to organise similar festivals. The paper went on to say at least one reveller must have felt he had received a chilly reception to the festivities. Police found him wandering the streets at 4 a.m. clad only in shirt and shoes. They elicited the information that he had fallen into a creek, had removed his trousers to dry them, and forgotten where he had left them. The man was given a pair of trousers and driven to Adelaide by a friend.
As it will also be the Centenary of Gallipoli this Anzac weekend the Society will again place white crosses and poppies, with the names of the Lyndoch men who enlisted, in the memorial garden lawn adjacent to the Institute.
History SA has arranged History Month in May and the Lyndoch Historical Society has organised an event which will be held in the Meeting Room at the rear of the Lyndoch Library on Saturday 14th May and Tuesday 17th May. From 10a.m. to 4p.m. on each occasion. Facilities will be available to enable family history research specifically relating to Lyndoch and Hoffnungsthal. There will also be a display of paintings and photographs of Lyndoch past and present and the museum will also be open. Event cost is by donation.
