Member Spotlight Each month we’ll shine the spotlight on a club member and let them share the love for their Ford products…….

It all started with a young boy’s fascination with a blonde Angel sitting on a blue and white Mustang II. This fascination grew until

that young boy turned 14 and could finally drive. With a loan from my grandmother (at 10% interest), I was able to buy my own

1977 Mustang II – Cobra II. But unlike that white and blue beauty, mine was white with red stripes. Although it did not matter, it

was mine and it was cooooool.

Fast forward a few years, and that young boy has a family of his own with a son the same age as he was when he fell in love with

Mustangs. After scouring eBay for months, I found a promising project car for me and my son to work on. A 1971 Mustang Mach 1.

This would be a meaningful father/son project to pass down some knowledge and build some lifelong memories. A year later, that

Mach 1 was running and driving. It still had a lot of work needed, but it was a fun car to experiment with. Over the next 3 years,

small projects would continuously improve the Mach with things such as a new A/C, stereo, center console, and some sweet shiny

new rims and tires.

With my daily driver, a 2003 Cadillac, having more problems than could be fixed, it was time to trade it off. In came Mikey – my

2012 Mustang V6 coupe. Although it is nothing too special, it is a fun daily driver that has enough giddy-up to keep me occupied on

the morning commute. I had plans for the 2012 – super charger, new paint, suspension – but realized that I was better off keeping

it stock and putting the time and money into the other cars.

Then 2020 hit. COVID-19. During this time my son was trying to join the Army and quit his job to enlist. The day before he could go

through the final steps of enlistment, the Army shut down all recruiting stations. Being home, without a job and nothing to do, he

asked me what he could do to keep busy. I gladly pointed to the 1977 Mustang in the garage and said “Let’s get started”.

Together we pulled the motor, stripped the car to bare metal, and removed the interior. Neither of us had done any body work

before, but there is no better way to learn than to jump in and do it. We bought a welder and paint guns, and began working on the

Cobra. We had a deadline looming over us to get the car completed before he left for basic training in December.

With everything eventually rebuilt, we were trying to start the car in the frigid cold of December. Unfortunately, he left for basic

training on December 28th without the car running. On December 30th, I was able to get the car started for the first time in years,

just two days after our deadline. I was amazed, but felt a bit defeated that he was not able to feel the low rumble of the 302

coming to life.

Over the next 6 months final touches were done to the car – interior, front spoilers, suspension, exhaust, wheels and tires, and

other touch ups. It was time to reveal my Cobra to the world, and it did it in a very loud fashion. Declaring – “I AM BACK AND I AM

LOUD!”

I am so appreciative of the opportunities these cars have given me with my family and friends, and all of the new friends I have met

along the way. It is not just the love you have for these cars; it is the impact these cars have on you and those around you.

TOPEKA MUSTANG CLUB Minutes for October 21, 2021

Members Present - 16 Guests Present - 6 The meeting was called to order at 6:30 pm by Roger. REPORTS The secretary’s report from September 2021 was read by Brenda. A motion to accept the secretaries report was made by Kay and seconded by Rob. The treasurer’s report was read by Terry. The ending balance in the Silver Lake main account is $1,568.04. The balance in the Wounded Warrior account is $761.00. A motion to accept the treasurer’s report was made by Randy and seconded by Kay. Kay then made a motion to move all but $250.00 of the $1,107.00 from the September 11th car show to the Wounded Warrior account. The $250.00 is the amount the club allocates to the SLI-Festival of Trees. The motion was seconded by Rob.

OLD BUSINESS For the MCA event at Heartland Park on October 2nd and 3rd, Roger thanked everyone who helped with the event. A special thanks to Kay and Deena who manned the registration table. For the 1st Annual Car Show at the Kansas Speedway, the weather is not looking very good. If the weather is bad, we will not caravan to the event; but everyone can still choose to attend the car show and race if you want. We talked to Clayton who is organizing the car show and he will be in contact with Roger over the next couple of days as the weather becomes clearer. We will keep everyone updated through emails and will also post the updates on Facebook. We may be able to get a refund for the car show registration fee. For Festival of Trees, Kay brought samples of the decorations that she has. We still need lights (probably around 1400 lights). Kay will send Brenda an example of the lights and we’ll ask club members to either donate lights or the money to purchase them. Helen made a motion to reimburse Terry & Kay $200.00 for items they have already purchased for the tree. The remaining $50.00 will be put towards lights and club members will be asked to help purchase the remaining lights that are needed. The motion was seconded by Brenda.
