SYSTEM OVERVIEW

The PASOLINK Network Management System comprises three elements, a high performance computer with peripheral equipment, a software package called PASOLINK Network management system (PNMS) and PASOLINK Management Card (PM CARD, only for PASOLINK) to be equipped in the PASOLINK equipment. The PNMS is located at a central or a regional operation center and enables network operators to monitor and control the PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ network and its elements remotely. Alternatively, a laptop computer with simplified software package, called PASOLINK Network Management Terminal (PNMT) is available for maintenance purpose. A PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ NE at the central site interfaces with the PNMS through one of the following interfaces.

- PASOLINK : 10BASE-T(LAN) or V.11/RS232C 19.2/9.6 kbps, Async (through Router) - PASOLINK+ : 10BASE-T(LAN) or V.11 19.2/9.6 kbps, Async (through Router)

Communication to the Remote PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ is established through one of the digital service channels in the network.

KEY COMPONENTS

• PNMS IBM-Compatible PC with its peripheral equipment and Windows XP/2000/NT operating system is used to support PNMS software. It provides a central access point to monitor and control the entire network remotely. The PNMS software provides map viewing of the entire network as well as its individual subnetworks. The PNMS provides means to edit, upload, and download the configuration files to each of the PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ network elements. Multi-level access privileges are implemented to ensure the security of the system. • PNMT A mobile terminal such as of a laptop PC running Windows XP/2000/NT/98 Operating system containing a simplified version of the PASOLINK Network Management software, called PNMT, is provided for maintenance purpose. This configuration can monitor and control a single PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ link at a time. Any link through the network, connected via digital service channel, can be monitored and controlled remotely from the laptop.

• PM Card (only for PASOLINK) The PASOLINK Management Card (PM CARD) is an optional plug-in module for NEC's PASOLINK Indoor equipment. The PM CARD handles the communication between the PASOLINK network elements and the Network Management system. It collects up to 300 event logging data and up to seven days of performance data. The PM CARD can either connect permanently or occasionally to the NMS. The PM CARD communicates with each other via one of the service channels. It serves as a single access point and enables the remote access to any PASOLINK in the network. The PM Card function is incorporated in the PASOLINK+ (CTRL module).

BASIC FUNCTIONS -PNMS-

• FAULT (EVENT) MANAGEMENT The PNMS monitors the status of the PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ stations by way of polling mechanism. Detection of a status change or failure to report at one of the PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ stations will result in a color change on the display and if appropriate, in an audible alarm.

• Intuitive GUI (Graphical User Interface) The PNMS provides intuitive graphical user interface as shown in the figure to the right. The user can access all the functions of PNMS and network element via this interface.

• Multi-layer display The multi-level windowing structure corresponding to different map levels (Network Map window) provides easy guidance to pinpoint to the PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ station of the concern and subsequently to its components. For ease of operation and quick reference, the PNMS automatically displays the status of the opposite PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ station with its key link parameters (Link Summary window). As shown in the figure to the right, key components of PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ such as the outdoor unit (ODU), indoor unit (IDU) and the PASOLINK Management Card (for PASOLINK)/CTRL Module (for PASOLINK+) are distinctly identified. The detailed information for each of these components can be found in the subsequent windows. • Alarm Logging display Two alarm logging windows are provided. One is a list of all active alarms in the network (Active alarm window) and the other, a list of recent alarm occurrence and recovery (Alarm history window). The alarms to be logged can be filtered in accordance with specified events and a specified period. Filtering options include PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ equipment, alarm item, alarm start time and alarm end time. Recent 90 days (maximum) alarm logs can be automatically stored with operator setting.

BASIC FUNCTIONS -PNMS-

• PERFORMACE MANAGEMENT The PNMS is able to retrieve the performance data of all listed PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ stations and their associated microwave link equivalent to ITU-T G.826 recommendation. For that purpose, the following performance parameters are measured: (For PASOLINK) - Errored Second Ratio (ESR) - Severely Errored Second Ratio (SESR) - Unavailable Seconds Ratio (UASR) - Background Block Error Ratio (BBER) (For PASOLINK+ ) - Errored Second (ES) - Severely Errored Second (SES) - Unavailable Seconds (UAS) - Background Block Error (BBE) - Out of Frame Seconds (OFS) The performance monitoring display is available in either a chart or a graph format. Thresholds can be defined in each parameter to signal an alarm when a performance objective has failed. Recent 90 days (maximum) link performance monitor data can be automatically stored with operator setting.

• SECURITY MANAGEMENT PASOLINK Network Management System employs high security measure to protect the network and network management system from unauthorized access.

• Multi-level user group Up to ten levels of user privileges and fifty users are defined and operator configurable. The highest level is the administrator level, which assigns the full access to the network and network management system and has the ability to create and assign privileges to other users. Privileges differ in the extent of access to a certain Network Elements and the right of available PNMS functions such as network element control and network configuration.

3) Multi cluster network The figure shows a multi-cluster network, monitored and controlled by the PNMS through LAN interface (IP network). Up to 32 remote clusters can be connected with PNMS through existing LAN (IP network). More than 32 remote clusters configuration are also possible by using Management interface unit (MIU) and Hybrid Converter (HYB CONV) in the figure to the right. MIU and HYB CONV provide concentration of supervisory signals to and from the remote clusters. 4) Mixed PDH, STM-1, STM-0 radio

equipment PNMS is designed that management of mixed STM-1, STM-0 and PDH radio equipment can be performed under one PC (NMS). Ring configuration is available only for the PASOLINK+.

5) Parallel PNMS configuration Two PNMS can monitor and control PASOLINK network simultaneously and independently to provide fault redundancy function. They are connected through Router, as shown in the figure to the right. This configuration is called Parallel PNMS. “Parallel" means that status change (ex. Alarm and event occurrence) of each NE is recognized in both PNMS. Even if one PNMS is down, the other PNMS can monitor and control NEs in the network. (The logging data, performance monitor data and network configuration data are not synchronized between the PNMS-1 and PNMS-2.)

NETWORK CONFIGURATIONS

6) Hierarchical PNMS configuration Central and Regional PNMS can be configured as shown in the figure to the right. Regional PNMS monitors and controls PASOLINKs (up to 500 NE or 1000NEs) in its region. Central PNMS monitors and controls all PASOLINKs (up to 2,000NEs) in all regions (up to 10 regions). It is considered an alternative configuration of “Parallel PNMS “ Each NE is monitored and controlled by both Central and Regional PNMS. It means that even if Central PNMS is down, each Regional PNMS can monitor and control NEs in its monitored and controlled region. In a similar way, if a regional PNMS is down, the central PNMS can monitor and control NEs under the region where the regional PNMS is down. (The logging data, performance monitor data and network configuration data are not synchronized between the central PNMS and Regional PNMS. Central PNMS has some restriction of the function.)

7) Upper Management Interface In order to make NEC's PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ equipment an integral part of an upper management system, an optional SNMP interface is provided with the PNMS. The interface is based on SNMPv1 and resides on the same PC as the PNMS. The detailed control and data gathering are performed by the PNMS. The summarized alarm traps (Summary SNMP trap such as Group of NE summary trap or NE summary trap) are sent to upper management system through this interface. As upper management system receives summary traps from PNMS, the operator needs to access the PNMS for the detail. In addition, as each PASOLINK / PASOLINK+

also has SNMP interface in itself, each PASOLINK / PASOLINK+ is directly accessible from upper management system if required. The interface to the upper management is UDP/IP with Ethernet interface. 10BASE-T is assumed for LAN interface.
