The Renaissance Group has enjoyed a verygood year. In September 2016, investigativejournalist and author Sarah Posner discussed theupcoming presidential election process. InOctober, we toured the Antietam Battlefield andhad lunch in Shepherdstown, WV. Then we co-sponsored the Chinese Dinner and Movie Nightwith Brotherhood in December. (We viewed“The Frisco Kid,” a comedy classic starring GeneWilder and Harrison Ford.) We toured theNational Museum of Health and Medicine inJanuary and learned how the Civil War markedthe age of modern surgery in the United States. As spring 2017 approached, we saw an excellentproduction of the musical “Ragtime” at Ford’sTheater. In April we toured the new NationalMuseum of African-American History. We closedthe program year with a May visit to the JewishMuseum of Maryland in Baltimore, and an end-of-the-year dinner on the Hal Bruno Patio and inthe Chapel at Temple Shalom.
Renaissance events are open to all. Attendingthem is a great way to meet other Templemembers and explore the Washington area.Events will be announced in the weekly Templeemails, and our full annual calendar can be foundon the Temple Shalom website.
Please contact Lynn Kanowith [email protected] for additional information.

From Rabbi Emeritus Bruce Kahn, wereceived the following news:
Hi Folks,
Phil Stewart grew up at Temple Shalom. After bar mitzvah he continued throughconfirmation and also graduated from ourpost-confirmation program. When hebecame an Eagle Scout, he held his ceremo-ny in our social hall. Years later he graduatedfirst in his US Air Force flight school classand became a fighter pilot. He has had amost illustrious, highly decorated career andwas twice promoted early due to his over-whelming excellence. Recently, the Pentagonannounced that Colonel Phillip Stewart hasbeen nominated to become a brigadier gen-eral, the first person with roots at TempleShalom to achieve this status.
Here is the announcement from thePentagon:
Air Force Col. Phillip A. Stewart hasbeen nominated for appointment tothe rank of brigadier general. Stewartis currently serving as deputy director, operations, Headquarters U.S. AirForces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base,Germany.
The US Senate has confirmed his nomina-tion. I don’t know where he will be when heputs on his star. I hope to be present. Hisparents, Barbara and Mason Stewart, havelived in Georgia for many years.
Peace, Bruce
Best wishes!
Dear Friends,
What an amazing year it has been of music
and worship programming, including High
Holy Day services, ten Family Youth Choir
services, eight Shir Shalom Music Shabbatot, a
spectacular MLK Shabbat, a Puppet Purim
featuring our Ruach Teen Choir, and very
special concerts: To Cuba With Love and Artist-
in-Residence Ellen Allard. Many thanks to
everyone who made the year so special: Singers,
players, planners, leaders, ushers, support staff
and all of you for joining us. The highlight of
the year, our Temple Shalom Mission to Cuba,
created memories that will last a lifetime.
We are already busy planning next year’s
programs, so be watching for what’s next. I
also want to extend a warm welcome to Rabbi
John Franken as we move ahead with the next
chapter in Temple Shalom’s future. May we all
be blessed with fortitude, gratitude and
strength for the year to come.
Wishing everyone a restful and peaceful
summer filled with laughter and love.

From the Cantor
Brotherhood and Sisterhood
For his Judaic Expressions presentation at a recent Brotherhoodmeeting, Marty Shargel told us about the issue of consuming coffeeduring Passover. It turns out that the Maxwell House Company, concerned that their Jewish customers might be—or might think theywere—restricted from drinking coffee during Passover, sought advicefrom a group of rabbis.
After studying the matter, the rabbis announced that because coffeeis made from roasted berries, not beans, there is no prohibition. Thispleased the Maxwell House officials at the meeting. As they wereleaving, the rabbis suggested that there might be something else theMaxwell House Company could do to promote their product duringPassover. That suggestion resulted in the blue and white Maxwell Househagaddahs that we all grew up with.
With thanks to Randall Luttenberg, the Brotherhood for the firsttime in anyone’s memory, held a recent meeting off site. We visited theonly liquor distillery in Montgomery County (pictured below). It waseducational, it was bonding, it was fun, and yes, it was good to the lastdrop.
A quick note of support for our Brotherhood softball team, now inits fifth year. With kudos to Manager Will Hochman and AssistantManager Jim Goldstein, the team is good till the last out drops in theirgloves, and enjoying a winning season.
Finally, I hope you enjoyed our End-of-the-School-Year Picnic, chairedby Matt Andelman, and will be able to drop by the Brotherhood’s ThirdAnnual Temple outing to the Bethesda Big Train baseball game onSunday, July 2 at 4 PM at their stadium in Cabin John Park. Thediscounted tickets sold by the Brotherhood support the Temple.
I look forward to seeing you at our Brotherhood events this year!
BROTHERHOOD
“Good to the Last Drop”By Peter Wolk, Brotherhood Co-President
It is with pride and enthusiasm that I introduce the new SisterhoodBoard to you!
Effective immediately, the following women have graciously agreed tolead, organize and provide opportunities for community, support andlaughs. The Board is a broad representation of our congregation and isexcited about modernizing our communication, increasing socialactivities and supporting meaningful events.
Please welcome these women by showing your support at ourupcoming events.Co-Presidents: Debbie Szyfer and Lori Simon-Rusinowitz Treasurer: Diane WechslerDigital Communications Chair: Stacey PaloskySocial Chair: Heidi LovettArtistic Chair: Emily MeyerEducation Chair and Wise Woman: Rabbi JoHanna PottsBoard Members: Bev Cohen, Jeanette Gordon, Stephanie Weldon, Beth Janoffand Susan Gerecht
We are also excited about welcoming Rabbi Franken to ourcongregation. We donated to his mitzvah fund and are co-sponsoring aBBQ event so that we may get to know him better. Along with theBrotherhood, we purchased the patio furniture so that we may enjoy thespace. We also donated $500 to purchase additional High Holy Daybooks. We hope our guests feel welcome at Temple Shalom as theyfollow the service along with us.
Susan Gerecht, as Treasurer, and I, as President and Co-President,have enjoyed participating in the Sisterhood Board over these past 8+years. Mindy Schuster will continue as an involved Temple member, andCarol Jimenez has joined the Temple Board.
The Sisterhood has grown to 150 strong members. But the time hascome to pass the baton to people who have new ideas and energy. Susan andI will continue on the Sisterhood Board, offering our support as needed.
Separately, Stefanie and I loved creating and building thegiftshop@templeshalom over the past five years. It wasn’t work butpassion for us. We invite you to continue to support the gift shop inwhatever format it takes.
We look forward to seeing you at an upcoming occasion.
Fondly,
Beth Janoff

Ben Andelman October 7, 2017
Shalom, my name is Ben Andelman. Iwill be called to the Torah as a BarMitzvah on October 7th, and I amsuper excited to take on all the chal-lenges and opportunities of becominga Jewish adult. I am an 8th grader atEastern Middle School in Silver Spring,MD. My favorite subjects at school aremath, Spanish, science, and orchestra. Ihave played the viola since I was nineand am still rocking out on it.
I like to play basketball and flag foot-ball. But when it comes to watching sports, I am a die-hardPittsburgh Steelers fan. I first started to enjoy playing basketball atmy Jewish sleep-away camp. I still look forward to going to CapitalCamps every year.
I also love to engineer things, which led me to Legos at a young age. When I was two I first picked up the bricks and it came to me natu-rally. Now I have a whole Lego city, most of which is custom builtfrom my imagination. This has led me to incorporate Lego buildinginto my Mitzvah project.
I am the older brother to three identical triplet sisters. Sometimesthey can be loud or annoying, but to me family is a part of me. Sure, not everyone would want triplet sisters, but I feel blessed to havethem. Besides hanging with my sisters, I like to watch and play sportswith my dad, and read and go on walks with my mom.
