PMIEF 2016 GRANTS TRANSFORM YOUTH,NONPROFITS, AND COMMUNITIES!Quite simply, project managers understand the power of projectmanagement skills more than anyone else. We know what worksand why. And we can impact our world together!

Because of friends and partners like you, PMIEF awarded over $1.3million in grants in 2016. Every dollar will be carefully utilized tobring life-changing project management skills to youth and theleaders of nonprofit organizations.

This year, we focused our grant offerings in two specific areas. Thefirst is “PM Knowledgeable Youth,” teaching children projectmanagement skills that will help them learn, live, and plan for thefuture more effectively.

Here are some of the exciting, life-changing grants that you madepossible in 2016 through your support:

Destination Imagination (DI) is teaching youth the creative process from imagination to innovation through hands-on learning and challengecompetitions. This year’s grant will allow them to assess the depth of students’ project management knowledge after participating in the2015-16 DI challenges (into which the organization integrated project management for the first time) and to use the data to inform how bestto strengthen project management integration into DI’s curricula and future challenge activities. The Space Foundation is creating a new project management-rich Robotics Laboratory simulation field trip that will enable teachers andstudents in Colorado, USA and Maharashtra, India to learn project management through science, technology, engineering andmathematics (“STEM”) studies. The Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) is developing an online course and handbook that will enable Career andTechnical Education (CTE) administrators to build their instructional leadership capacity and to strengthen teachers’ skills through projectmanagement.

The second area in which we offered 2016 grants is “PM Capable Nonprofits,” equipping nonprofit leaders and professionals to transform theiragencies through project management, becoming more effective in accomplishing their missions.

UNICEF USA is integrating project and program management to increase the organization’s capacity to save and to protect more childrenthrough its mission of advocating, educating and fundraising for UNICEF’s global lifesaving programs.Doctors Without Borders USA is integrating project and program management skills into all areas of the organization with special attentionbeing paid to their “Making Systems Fundamentally Work” program. Over time, they expect to greatly expand service capacity througheffectively streamlining processes.

All of these organizations are making a significant life-changing difference, leading to greater social good. And 2017 is going to be even moreexciting as we add a third area of focus: PM Ready Workforce.

But we need your help to make this critical global work a reality.

Please give today to inspire and empower people—from youth to teachers to nonprofit leaders and more—to transform their lives andcommunities through the use of project management knowledge.

Thank you!

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: JO FERGUSON, PMP® RETIREDJo Ferguson knows project management inside and out, forwards and backwards...maybe even upside-down!

She says that project management has defined every area of her life since she was a young adult, with each partof her education, career, and family life building on these critical life skills...leading to a lifetime of success.

Right after college, Jo began teaching high-school math and physics. She shared, “I love how strong projectmanagement skills help students to learn, better organize their work, and become more invested in what they’relearning.”

Eventually, Jo turned her project management skills into a degree from the University of Southern California insystems management and entered the corporate world.

She shares, “I found PMI’s resources fairly early on in my career. The skills you learn are transportable to any lifeevent, any project, and any job. The knowledge I gained helped my career to skyrocket!”

Jo is deeply passionate about project management skills…and especially about passing them on to the next generation through PMI and PMIEF.And she joined the PMIEF board to do just that.

Over two terms—including time as the board chair—Jo helped PMIEF pursue new areas of focus. From business and nonprofit partnerships toeducational programs overseas, Jo pushed PMIEF to grow.

One of Jo’s favorite accomplishments was a “STEAM” [science, technology, engineering, arts, and math] collaboration between her localsymphony and area schools. She is deeply proud of the project management skills PMIEF brought to both the students and symphony leaders:

“Kids had the opportunity to design programs, work in the printing shop, and organize a poetry contest for symphony events. And we taughtleaders to manage performances like projects. I remember sitting in the audience, listening to students play alongside the professionals too. Sucha joy to see project management impact all ages!”

Beyond her professional life and service with PMIEF, Jo and her husband translated project management skills to their home life, passing on theirlove for project management to their children. Today, they have the skills they need to succeed. Two of her daughters are college professors andanother is a software engineer. But best of all, her girls have been teaching project management skills to their children.

When Jo attended her grandson Cameron’s fifth birthday party, she received an adorable surprise. On the kitchen table, in shaky, childishhandwriting, was a schedule for the party:

“2:00 p.m. Kids arrive. 2:05 p.m. Play outside. 2:45 p.m. Eat cake. 3:00 p.m. Open presents. 3:30 p.m. Hit piñata. 4:00 p.m. Everybody go home.”

The next generation of project managers are well on their way...thanks to PMIEF and people like Jo.

To close, Jo shared why she believes so strongly in the mission of PMIEF:

“Using our project management skills, we can contribute to students, nonprofits, and make a difference in the world. We can make an impact oneveryone we touch. Why wouldn’t you want to support PMIEF today?”
