British Gas: Proud to have delivered the UK's largest ECO1 scheme Project Overview The long-term partnership between British Gas, Plymouth Community Homes and Plymouth City Council is a great example of how a community, a local housing provider and the council can work together to increase the energy efficiency of thousands of homes. The citywide project delivered in only two years (December 2013-15) has transformed 3,908 homes with the installation of external wall insulation. To reduce future costs and to complete the rejuvenation, Plymouth Community Homes also replaced canopies, gutterings and fascia's. Energy efficiency improvements were also promoted to the private sector with a £20million deal between Plymouth City Council and British Gas. Homeowners, landlords and tenants could apply for energy efficiency grants providing opportunity for the wider Plymouth community to also benefit from the scheme. Health and safety On site staff, resident and visitor health and safety is of paramount importance to British Gas. We are delighted the project has exceeded the company's minimum standards with a Hurst Setter independent Health and Safety inspection awarding the scheme an average score of 75.08%. Providing opportunities for local people A high priority of any scheme is to offer local employment opportunities. With a shortage of a local skilled workforce and relatively high levels of unemployment, a dedicated training programme was developed. In total, 228 NVQ level 3 insulation installer courses were completed; many which were taken by those living in the homes included in the work programme. Plymouth Community Homes also invited second and third year environment and construction students from Plymouth University to visit the site and get a hands-on experience at work being carried out. Guy Durant, construction student, said: “The visit helps massively with the coursework and the practical knowledge gives an advantage in job interviews with technical questions.” Case Study Plymouth Other works: 290 high efficiency boilers installed 2,290 cavity insulation extractions £2m non-ECO insulation work *estimated calculation 3,908 homes insulated 200,000 m2 external wall insulation installed 102,507* tonnes carbon saved Delivered 11months ahead of schedule
