I t’s that time of the year again… The sound of lawnmowers starting up again after the winter break; stacks of hurleys, helmets and gear bags lie in heaps in classroom corners (like their owners, they’re bursting to get out the door and into action!) And there’s a match to look forward to every weekend! In this issue you can read about the finest stadium in Europe and navigate a crowded calendar of upcoming fixtures to discover just a fraction of what we have to look forward to in the coming term. Mickey Ned has introduced new faces and they’re doing him proud. We’ve been casting our eye over them. We’ve also focussed on the recent divisional and inter-divisional primary school football competi-tions. 2006 brought trophies and glory for St. Nessan’s NS on the football field. West Limerick claimed the Sarsfield Cup and the Larkin Shield. There’s news and results from around the county and dates for all the glamour fixtures and finals from now until late June. Indoor or outdoor, from Croagh to Croke Park, the season ahead is full of possibilities. And “The Green and White” will be there to record the excitement and achievements, as we have been doing since September 1996.

Larkin Shield Goes West Again

Larkin Shield Facts:

The growth in popularity of ladies football, both among players and spectators, is one of the most remarkable features of modern Irish sport and, judging by the third running of the Allianz Larkin Shield, this trend is set to continue. The Larkin Shield brought together the best primary schools girls from all corners of the county-and what an exhibition they put on for us! Skill, endeavour, heroics, drama…and a last-gasp winning score. This final had it all! West Limerick left it to the last minute of the final to get their noses in front and their large band of followers danced with delight at the final whistle!Match Report:East Limerick, backboned by St. Ailbe’s, were determined to regain the coveted trophy and Niamh Ryan led by example as she sliced through the West rearguard to open the scoring with a beautiful point. Caroline Hickey raised a second white flag as the East used wind advantage to the full. Dazzling forward play saw Stephanie Carroll notch the game’s opening goal. Niamh Ryan rifled home goal number two to stretch the East advantage. But Timmy Woulfe’s charges refused to panic and when Katie Forde latched onto a long delivery just before the break, she coolly side-stepped her marker and fired home from a narrow angle. It was the perfect boost going in at half time (score: East Limerick 2-2: West Limerick 1-0). West Limerick signalled their intentions from the throw-in as they quickly set about reducing the deficit. The East rearguard was heroic but pressure finally paid off for the West girls and Dervla Murphy fired home their second goal. East goalie, Leonie O'Donnell was in great form and the East defence repelled wave after wave of attacks. Amy Griffin added a point for the West to cut the deficit to a single point. The East rallied, refused to panic, and Niamh Ryan took the responsibility on herself to solo through the heart of the West defence and fire over a great point. With time ebbing away, a final West onslaught saw Martina Mc Mahon secure possession and fire left-footed to the net. There was no time left for the East to fight back and the final blast on referee Patsy Coffey’s whistle saw scenes of unbridled joy in the West ranks. G&W

St. Nessan’s Girls Make it a Double! Anything the boys of St Nessan’s NS can do, the girls can match! The Mungret school completed a grand slam of football trophies when the girls football team crowned a wonderful year by capturing the Celtic Image Shield. A thrilling final saw St Nessan’s reverse the result of the previous year when they toppled reigning champions Roxborough NS.

Celtic Image Glory for St. Nessan’s GirlsBy the Mungret girlsIt was a lovely day in the Gaelic Grounds. Three teams, Bruff, Roxboro and Mungret (us!) had qualified for the County Final. We played Bruff in our first match and won 3:6 to 0:0. Then Bruff played Roxboro, and Roxboro came out on top. We then played Roxboro (the holders) in the final. The whistle blew and the game was on! Suddenly Maeve Barry came down the wing to score a fantastic goal. We fought hard and so did Roxboro. Mungret scored another goal (kicked beautifully to the net by Nicole Power). Roxboro replied with 2 goals. Level again! Both teams were under pressure and either team could have won. A perfect pass from our goalie Emma O'Rourke found Jenny O'Malley and the move was finished off by Clodagh Moloney with a goal in the top corner. The final whistle sounded and we all jumped up in the air. There was laughing, cheering and crying. The trophy was presented to Aileen Buckley and we ran around the pitch singing and cheering. That was the day that Mungret won the county final for the first time!

Spring 2007 The Green & White

Pádraig Browne is a perfect example of a modern inter-county footballer. Fit and fast with skill to burn, he is not restricted to any zone on the playing field. Instead, his distinctive style sees him pop up all over the field, making interceptions, supporting play, and covering back. Pádraig came into the team in 2003 as a corner-back but has filled the centre-back role in this season’s League campaign. Fr. Casey’s triumph in the 2006 County Championship has seen him don the captain’s armband, an honour that Pádraig greatly appreciates. But his roaming style is not restricted to the playing pitch. While some of his Limerick teammates travel from West Limerick or Clare, every Limerick fixture entails a little more for the Civil Engineering student from Abbeyfeale. For Pádraig is a student in the Scottish capital Edinburgh. There he studies from Monday to Friday, training on his own every day before packing his boots and heading for the airport at weekends. One weekend in February, Pádraig left Edinburgh on Friday, led Limerick in a National League tie v Dublin on Saturday afternoon, lined out for Fr. Casey’s against Cork aces Nemo Rangers in the final of the Munster League on Sunday and was back in college on Monday morning. And that’s not all. Pádraig is a key man in the Tournafulla hurlers’ plans for 2007, playing in the forward line. He is especially looking forward to working with their new coach Ciarán Carey. Pádraig, though only in his early 20’s is a veteran of the inter-county scene. He first donned the Limerick colours when he lined out in the Primary Game in the long hot summer of 1996. Andrew O'Shaughnessy was a teammate then. They’ve both come a long way.

The Underdogs ExperienceThe TG4 Ladies Football Underdogs culminated in a match against Cork at windswept, floodlit Páirc Uí Rinn on December 9th. We knew this game would be a challenge but little did we think that the Rebels would be as strong, skilful and courageous as they proved to be. Let there be no doubt about it, the Cork Senior Ladies deserve their All Ireland medals!

Thomas Cahill of County football champions Fr. Casey’s may not be known to many of our readers but The Green and White can confidently predict that great things lie ahead for the towering Abbeyfeale midfielder. Thomas may be learning his trade as an inter-county footballer but his displays to date prove that he is a quick learner. A tiler by trade, Thomas shot into the public eye when Fr. Casey’s won the 2006 Limerick senior football title. Hard, lean and uncompromising, Thomas has carried on in convincing style in the Limerick jersey and few who witnessed his league displays this spring will forget the impact he made, winning possession, distributing effectively and still finding time to put in bone-shuddering shoulder charges that stopped opponents in their tracks. Thomas has forged an effective partnership with John Galvin and the form of the Limerick duo is an encouraging omen for Limerick football supporters.

Special Report Spring 2007 The Green & WhiteThe Green & White

Played at Páirc na nGael in ideal conditions, the 2006 Allianz Sarsfield Cup served up some top-class entertainment and provided ample evidence of the ever-improving standards in Limerick primary schools Gaelic Football.

West LimerickWest Limerick

Semi-final 1West Limerick defeated East Limerick by 0-4 to 0-3.

Final: West Limerick 1-7: South Limerick 1-4The spellbinding movement of the West forwards ensured that the South boys were chasing shadows for much of the opening half. Ryan Carroll struck a hammer blow when he fired home an early goal for the West who then proceeded to tag on six points in a row. Shane Mulvihill from Carrickerry was a thorn in the side of the South defence and he notched three of these points while Maurice Shine (capt.), David O'Mahony and Kevin Murphy also raised white flags. Dean Coughlan replied for the South on the stroke of half time, leaving the score at half time: West Limerick 1-6 South Limerick 0-2.We don’t know what Ollie Coffey said to his charges during the break but his team returned to the fray determined to make inroads into the West lead. Two quick points followed before Adrian Enright replied for the West. A succession of attacks eventually paid off for the South when Kieran O'Dea scored a goal after the West failed to clear a ‘45’. South piled on the pressure for the last ten minutes but they had left themselves with a mountain to climb and the West survived.

Tournament Referee was Patsy Coffey (Cappamore)

Semi-final 2South Limerick ousted Limerick City on a score line of 2-5 to 1-4. Limerick City led at half time by 1-4 to 0-2 but could not add to their tally and the South advanced to the final.

The Gerald Griffin’s star was the only Limerick player to receive a nomination for a 2006 O’Neill’s/TG4 Ladies Football All-Star Award. But her greatest honour, surely, was lining out for her country in the inaugural Ladies International Rules series (v Australia). The talented forward scored 12 points on her (winning) international debut. Dympna is also a top soccer player and plays camogie for Killeedy and Limerick. A few short years ago, when Dympna was a primary school pupil, she was tipped for the top when she featured in a Green and White Magazine article entitled, “Little Miss Dynamite!” Now that she’s arrived, we wish her many years of contin-ued success at the top … in all her sporting endeavours.

Family TiesEvery GAA team has its family ties. Ollie & Niall Moran, Tomás, Dara & Marc Ó'Sé, Ben & Jerry O Connor … the list is endless. Barry Murphy lined out with Doon CBS in the recent East Football Finals. On the same side was Dara Stapleton, Barry’s uncle. The family connections don’t stop here. Spring 2007 The Green & White

Dear Sirs, My favourite team is Limerick. I know they haven’t been that successful lately, but they’re my home county. This year my school won the Girls East Limerick Schools Football final against Oola. I was the captain. Our coaches were Séamus Keating and Mike Clarke. I play hurling with the Under 12 boys (and camogie with my club and school). I got on the East Limerick Camogie team last year and this year I was on the football team. I also play soccer for Cappamore Celtic.Claire Keating,Scoil Chaitríona,Cappamore.

Dear Sirs,

My name is Paddy Byrnes. I always read The Green

and White. It’s great fun. My favourite hurler is D.J.

Carey—even though I’m from Limerick and he’s from

Kilkenny! I am in 5th Class and I am 12 years old.

I play hurling and Gaelic Football.

Paddy Byrnes,

Scoil Chaitríona.

Dear Sir, I like to watch hurling and football on TV. I follow the Limerick teams. I play under 12’s with

the Cappamore Camogie Club. My mam trains us. I am glad to see the GAA allowing rugby to be played in Croke Park, as I like most sports.Denise Blackwell,Scoil Chaitríona.
