Different Note Review Methods

Outlining your notesBest used for well organized material that moves

from main ideas to details. (History)

Charting your notesGreat for subject matter that can be broken down

into categories, such as similarities/difference, date/event/impact, pros/cons, etc.

Mapping your notesUses graphic organizers and diagrams to organize

notes; It is useful for those who learn best with visuals.

-Find a “sheet” of notes from the class with your lowest grade OR one in which you have a test this

week.-Take time review/reorganize these notes on a

separate sheet of paper.

HistoryDeveloped in 1949 by Walter Pauk at Cornell

University.

Why?He developed Cornell Notes in response to

frustration over student test scores.

How?Cornell notes get students to process notes THREE

DIFFERENT times!! Recall the Forgetting Curve.

Why should WE learn how?“When used appropriately, students are

GUARANTEED to increase their knowledge and raise their grades in ANY given class.”

S = Set up your paperWrite a proper heading: Class and Date

S = Set up your paperWrite the topic of the lecture.

S = Set up your paperSave 1/3 of the left hand side of the paper for questions by folding or drawing a vertical line

T = Take NotesWrite notes on the right side of the page.

- Abbreviate and Paraphrase

- Skip at least one to two lines between each idea.

A = Apply your ThinkingWithin 24 hours of taking your notes, review your notes and write questions on the left side of page.

R = Reflect on NotesWithin 24 hours, add a summary to your notes at the

bottom half of the paper.

R = Revise the NotesCompare notes with classmates or textbook for items

you might have missed.

R = Review NotesFold your notes so that the questions show; Quiz
