“Connecting People to Jesus and Others”
January 2014
Plunging Ahead in Our God Given Mission Pastor Neil Nelson, Associate Pastor Adult Disciple Making What if I told you about a place where trees were always green, the temperature stayed 80 all year round, and if you went there all you would have to do is lounge on a beach looking at clear blue water and waiters would bring you all your food. What would you say? First, I know some of you would say, “no thanks, I like the seasons” or maybe you don’t enjoy beaches, but for most of us, we would pretty quickly want to know “how do I get there?” We know that in Matthew 28:19, Jesus gives His disciples the mission of making disciples. Our church has developed a great explanation of a disciple with our four C’s, expressed in our mission statement like this, “Bible EFC exists to honor God first in Tomah and then throughout the world by making disciples of Jesus Christ who are becoming convinced by Him, changed to be like Him, called to His priorities, and committed to loving relationships.
Our goal is clear, make disciples, and in our context, the four C’s is a great way to remember that disciples are convinced, changed, called, and committed. The million dollar question then is, how do we get there? This is where our illustration fits in. We want our pathway to disciple making to be crystal clear. Think of directions you often get in a package that says some assembly required. Sometimes you have clear pictures and great instructions, other times you might as well try to read another language for all the sense they make. Directions and clarity are both essential. Much of what you are seeing in terms of content, you have seen before, but our desire is that this illustration will help make our pathway of disciple making clearer. As you see in the bold black, we have our definition of a disciple. It is the destination, where we want everyone on our church family to be heading, but how do we get there?
Again looking at Jesus’ model there seems to be three patterns that emerge. People are connected to Jesus and others. Think about how that worked. Jesus spent time with people, He got to know them, and then offered them the invitation to follow Him. Other times Like in the case of Peter, we know that it was his relational connection to his brother Andrew, which resulted in his introduction to Jesus. Growing up I used to hear that, on average, a person needed to come into contact with a number of Christ followers before they would be ready to make a commitment to follow Jesus. People need to be connected, to the body of Christ, and ultimately to the head, which is Jesus. So as a church, we ought be serious about ministries that will connect people with each other and Jesus.
Plunging Ahead in Our God Given Mission - continued
Throughout the gospels we see Jesus taking time to teach His disciples. Who hasn’t read the gospels and been amazed at Jesus’ patience with His disciples that seemed to be so slow to grasp who He was, and what His life meant. The disciples had to learn and grow, and not just hear something once, but have the true identity and mission of Jesus driven deep into their hearts. It wasn’t easy, and it looked different for each of the disciples, but the common thread was, they all had to grow. If we want to be a disciple, we too have to grow. Ministry then must look like growth opportunities. Opportunities where we engage God through His Word, and through His Spirit, and in His people, allowing what we are learning to change our lives. We, as disciples, must be taught, but we also must engage in real life, both successes and failures to look for God’s shaping hand in our development. Growth is about both what we know and who we are, and we must shape growing ministry that speaks to both. Third, we see that Jesus sent His disciples out to do ministry. Sometimes it was to great success that they told Him about when they returned to Him as recorded in Luke 10. Other times, they failed miserably, like with the demon they could not cast out in Luke 9. Even in these ministry opportunities, they were still disciples, being shaped by their master. Their ministry was about God working in them, as much as it was about God working through them. So then we too are called to serve to raise up the name of Jesus and to be challenged to follow Him more closely at the same time. Serving is not just filling a need at our church, but also about being a part of the work God is doing in our community. Serving God is about joining in what God is doing all around us, and realizing He is working in us to shape a disciple, while working through us.
Why is this pathway so important? To make it clear. We want people to know how they can
continue to be shaped as followers of Jesus, when they come to our church for the first time,
or when they come again for the three thousandth time, and feel like they have been
spiritually stuck for some time. We want this pathway model to help ministries figure out
where they fit into the disciple making pathway, and to help relieve the pressure that their
ministry has to do everything for everyone. These different areas are not clear in life.
Sometimes a ministry meant to connect, will be used by God for great growth in your life, and
sometimes someone will get connected because they jumped in on a serving opportunity.
For those coming to our church, this new illustration will help them see where they can get
plugged in to grow, or connect with others, or how they might be able to serve. Throughout
this month’s newsletter you will see the pictures for each of the different elements of our
pathway connected to various announcements. They will let you know if an opportunity is
about connection, or growth, or a way to serve. My prayer is that these will help make our
church more accessible to those who come here, and also give clarity to us as we think
about ministry we plan. It is also that in a very small way this will eliminate obstacles that
keep us from becoming disciples who are convinced, changed, called, and committed.

Financial Update for the Budget Year 7/1/13 to 6/30/14 As most of you are aware we asked the congregation in October to be aware and help with our cash flow situation. And we thank you for your generous support through that immediate financial crisis. As you know, we pass a budget every year at the annual meeting that has fixed budget items that must be paid and variable budget items that we hope to be able to access during the ministry fiscal year. This fiscal year our giving is higher than it has ever been, but our annual budget is also higher than it has ever been. Therefore, our giving is still short of our required ex-penses that have been paid for during the first six months of the fiscal year. We have tightened our belt on the variable budget items and believe that we can still meet our ministry needs with some additional help from the congregation. We are about $1,000 a week short on an average to meet our actual expenses and $2,000 a week short of our budgeted expenses. Over the next six months that would be $26,000 additional to meet our minimum expenses and $52,000 to meet all of our annual financial budget items. The budget includes several things we can really use, if the money is available. Another way you may consider helping is to designate toward the “Raise the Roof Fund”. We still owe approximately $33,000 of the $90,000 Timberwood Bank loan that was expended to replace the roof last fiscal year. Our budget pays approximately $300 a week to pay this loan off. If we had the funds designated (by you) to pay off this amount, this would help lower the budget items for this fiscal year and the next two fiscal years. We know that God is in control and definitely in-charge of our finances. We have a mission field in the City of Tomah and surrounding areas to make disciples of Jesus within our church and local community. We appreciate the sacrifices that you have made in the past. We look forward to your prayers and consideration of these matters. In Christ, Frank Best, on behalf of the Budget Contingency Team

2014 Has Arrived!!
With a new year comes another chance to ponder the past year and what we would like to see change during the upcoming year. So often we try to make drastic changes that are unrealistic and fade away quickly. This week would be a good time to gather
as a family to come up with “resolutions” for 2014 that are reasonable and fun, yet faith-building for everyone! Will your family gather once a day, week, or month to
intentionally partake in activities that help you grow spiritually? Will you plan to take advantage of family service opportunities at various times throughout the year? Plan
together, write it down, and allow every family member to help with accountability. Watch our Facebook Children’s Ministry group and the newsletter for fun,
faith-building ideas throughout the year!
Here are a few pictures from our Christmas Program . The kids did a fantastic job!

Packing shoebox gifts is always more fun with others. We are hosting a packing party at

shoeboxes for needy children around the world. Our hope is to offer up to four packing party
opportunities in 2014 prior to the collection date in November! In the meantime, we will be
collecting items for the February 2 event throughout the month of January in the foyer. Items
to be collected include such things as (copied from OCC website):
