PLUME COLLEGE YEAR 12 INTO YEAR 13 SUMMER TRANSITION CHALLENGE 2017 Subject: Qualification/Level: Examination Board SPANISH A2 AQA We expect students at Plume College to complete a transition piece of work for each subject between Year12 and Year13. This is assessed and feedback given to students when they start the courses in September 2017. The following challenge(s) are to be completed over the summer break and brought to your first lesson. To be successful in this KS5 Subject Area I need to demonstrate the following key study skills:- Resilience and self-motivation Critical approach to Writing Time management & Organisation Independent research & Reading skills Essay writing Examination Preparation: Revision The Summer Transition into Year 13 ‘CHALLENGE’ Shallow TASK A - FILM Película: Ver la película « El Laberinto del Fauno » en español otra vez. Se puede encontrar en Netflix. Watch the film in French « El Laberinto del Fauno » again. You can find it on Netflix. TASK B - BOOK Leer el libro « Crónica de una muerte anunciada » por Gabriel García Márquez, español. Read the book « Crónica de una muerte anunciada » by Gabriel García Márquez in Spanish. TASK C - IRP Completar y finalizar vuestra investigación para vuestro proyecto de investigación elegido. Complete and finalise your research for your chosen research project. TASK D - GRAMMAR Revisad completamente la gramática española, los tiempos verbales cubiertos en As y todos los verbos irregulares de memoria. Seguid la lista y escribid un tic junto a cada tema completado. Podéis usar un libro de gramática o páginas web pero imprimid copias de todo lo que completéis. Revise completely the grammar, tenses covered at AS including all irregular verbs off by heart. Follow the AS Grammar tick list for this and complete grammar exercises from a grammar book or on line but print copies of all those completed. TASK E – REVISION TECHNIQUES/STRATEGIES Revisad y cread listas, tarjetas y esquemas/mapas mentales para todo el vocabulario de los temas de As. Revise and create highlighted lists, flashcards, mind-maps… whatever works for you… for all of the vocabulary of Year 12. How the work produced will fit into subsequent work and the specification as a whole. The work produced will allow students to complete some foundation work on the Cinema, Literature, and their Independent Research Project which form a major part of the A2 course – Speaking and Writing Exams.

How the work should be presented. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and therefore all work must be written in your own words and correctly referenced. The work should be presented in word documents with links to external references, audio file or hand written with appropriate bibliography. Length of time expected to complete the challenge:-

• Please be aware that you will have at least 4-5 hours of homework per subject per week. • Regular consistent time 30 minutes per task for series of sessions.

How the work will be assessed and marked:- • The work produced will be assessed according to use of grammar, accuracy, variety of tenses, range of language and

vocabulary used including pronunciation and intonation. Success criteria for this challenge:-

• Benchmark skills – reviewing and developing these skills is essential for a solid transition from As Year12 into A-level Year13.

• Cultural immersion – it is essential for students to develop a wider knowledge of the Spanish language and culture by

visiting the country, being in touch with native speakers or at least watching Spanish tv (www.rtve.es) , listening to Spanish radio/music (www.cadenadial.es), reading the news in Spanish about Spanish speaking countries (http://www.elmundo.es/ , http://elpais.com/ , http://www.20minutos.es/)

• Reading and Writing, Grammar skills to be developed, reviewed and addressed in authentic tasks – essential for students to

maintain their skill foundation in these areas and increase their knowledge of the Spanish speaking world.

• Students can refer to Grade Boundaries in accompanying document when completing Writing and Speaking tasks. Resources to be used for this work.

• Write an appreciation of two books in comparison. In this appreciation include more depth about the books including plot, characterisation, themes addressed, influences, context… You will need to read around the books – book reviews, and read about the authors to be able to develop a detailed enough response to include the above elements.

• This appreciation will be marked as per Writing grade boundaries and the content will need to address key aspects of literature and chosen author/s.
