VP TechnicalBrianne Hall, P.E., LEED AP BD+C, CPD

Thank you to all sponsors, attendees, instructors and our speaker for a suc-cessful October meeting!

The evening started with our design class instructors, Mike Melaragni and

design classes this year on venting. The series will continue at our next meeting,

on November 18th, with the topic “Common Vents” and will be moved to the room our meetings are held in to accom-modate additional attendees. If you have any suggestions as to how these classes can be improved, please let me know!

Our technical session, BIM Life Cycle, was provided by Mark Lamberson, who is the Lead Piping Planner at Lim-bach and also serves on our board as the Education Chair. Mark provided a thorough presentation starting with the

different phases of a project and the types of information BIM models may contain. Additionally, he reviewed the various types of hardware and software available to engi-neers, contractors and construction project managers, reviewed the risks and opportunities associated with BIM, and utilized his own project experience to aid in the discussion.

National Building Information Model Standard Project Committee as the following:

“BIM is a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable

from earliest conception to demolition.”

LOD. These levels can range from LOD 100, which is a schematic 2D drawing of the project, to LOD 500 which contains construction schedule, cost estimation and support-ing documentation including O&M manuals and warranty information. In 2016, all government construction projects in the U.K. will be required to meet a minimum BIM crite-rion which is comparable to our LOD 400.

While there are hurdles to overcome in utilizing BIM, such as the cost of new hardware, software, training and develop-

in 3D allows architects and engineers to easily identify con-

early phases of construction, contractors from all trades pro-vide their models to the project BIM leader, or integrator, who is able to run clash detection between the models. Clash

resolved prior to construction, which helps reduce RFIs and construction delays.

The owner receives a valuable resource at the completion of the project when receiving an as-built 3D model for future use.

A highlight of the presentation, in my opinion, was being able to see the software as well as screenshots and photos of the various tools that Mark utilizes in his projects. Unfortunately, this visual portion of the presentation cannot be accurately described in writing. However, there were requests by attend-ees on our speaker evaluation forms to have Mark provide this presentation for their companies. This would allow you to see a demonstration of the various types of software and understand the full capabilities it provides. If you would like Mark to pres-ent on BIM at your company, or have any questions, please contact him at [email protected]

I have designed several projects in 3D, participated in clash detection meetings and appreciate the advances technology has provided to assist this industry. It is exciting to watch as BIM continues to evolve and to see the potential value for an owner who receives an LOD 500 model. I look forward to the future when an existing building renovation project lands on my desk with a BIM model, rather than a roll of drawings. It will be interesting to write an article comparing existing renovation projects using drawings vs. a BIM model.

.Last month, I wrote my article from the train to the ASPE Convention. This month, I wanted to take a little more

the Convention.

While attending the Convention, I sat in the national Education Committee meeting on Saturday morning. The

Board was extremely excited to see all of the participation. They were only expecting to see three or four people there, but there were many more in attendance. It is obvious that we all believe the future of ASPE is in education.

We kicked around some ideas on bettering the education offerings at the national level. An opportunity presented itself to help out another chapter that has some outdated material that they would like to update. They have four programs, varying in content, and two of them are complete. After our discussion at the last Eastern Michigan board meeting, I will be in contact with this other chapter to get the ball rolling on the update. I hope this will result in four completed plumbing design courses being made available to us for our next program. I will keep you posted.

Throughout the convention, there were plenty of opportunities to meet counterparts from all over the country, and even the world. I attended the First Timers’ Breakfast on Monday and got to converse with an engineer from the U.K. about BIM. Some of the information he gave me put into question some of my beliefs about BIM. For instance, while it has been a general understanding that BIM has developed "across the pond" and made its way to the U.S., he assured me that the U.S. is now ahead of the U.K. in the use of BIM. While this may be opinion, the source was an engineer

During the exposition there was a selection of courses to attend that consisted of varying topics condensed into an

The Revit MEP class was excellent. This course was presented by Samuel Leo, a Plumbing Designer from

hour and a half. Revit proved to be as cantankerous as ever, but Mr. Leo did an excellent job covering families, scheduling, and annotations, among others. Of real interest

architectural based product to meet the requirements for plumbing design.

I attended a seminar on Bulk Oxygen systems. This was interesting because this work normally falls outside of the scope of an installer and is not covered to this extent. The program was very in depth and regulation driven.

Liaison ReportDann Holmes

Deadlines! I need to work better to meet them. Attempting to write an article for multiple ASPE Chapters with different publication dates each month has brought me a new challenge. I’m up for this task.

Many things have transpired in our

The ASPE 50th Conference and Expo held in Chicago was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who attended from our Region.

Congratulations go out to Mitch Clemente, CPD our newly elected ASPE President; Chris Graham, CPD, FASPE newly elected ASPE Treasurer; and Keith Bush, CPD, CSI who was elected as our new Region 2 Director. It’s important to note that all three of these distinguished gentlemen are from Region

be proud for them and us. These changes alone would give anyone enough to write about.

Then a shockwave hits. After 4 years of unprecedented and dedicated service to ASPE; Jim Kendzel announced he was stepping down as ASPE CEO/Executive Director. He also

newly elected seat on the WPC Board. I want to personally thank Jim for all he has done for me and for our organization. We wish him and his family the best in his new career path.

Meanwhile, during the same time as the ASPE Expo, there was another important industry event taking place in Chicago - PPXVII. What is this you ask? PP translates to Plastic Pipe and XVII is for the 17th international conference. This event takes place every other year, alternating from Europe to North America and back. PPXVIII will convene in Berlin in September of 2016. Visit www.ppxvii.org for additional information.

But wait…there’s more! I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you of another event. Put this one on your calendar.

On January 20th, 2015 our ASPE Eastern Michigan Chapter and Detroit ASHRAE Chapter will co-host a joint meeting. Their special guest speaker will be world renowned radiant guru John Siegenthaler. John will give a two-hour presentation titled "Unique Hydronic Details for Domestic Water Heating". This alone is reason for a road trip.

If you do travel, plan to spend the night because John will also give a special seven-hour presentation on January 21st. This course will carry CEU for P.E.’s. This event is planned to be held at the Plumbing Industry Training Center in Troy, MI. There will be more information on these educational events soon.

Wouldn’t it be great if Mitch, Chris and Keith could attend our meeting in Detroit when John is presenting?

Next month I tell you about the recent Plastic Pipe Institute www.plasticpipe.org meeting in Dallas, TX and the Plumbing Manufacturers Institute www.safeplumbing.org meeting in Chicago.

Pardon me but I have to go now; I have other deadlines to meet.

As always, please feel free to contact me at:

NSF International – Business Unit Manager [email protected] or (734) 214-6222

The last class that I attended was titled "How to Excel at Excel," and was taught by Jeff Ingertson and Mike Olson. This class was worth the price of admission on its own. We will be discussing this topic in more detail in the near future, so I do not want to give anything away here. Stay tuned.

For those who attended the BIM technical session, thank you for the feedback and the overwhelming positive response to the course. We are already discussing the comments on the evaluation forms and hope to follow up on some of the requests in the near future.

With new national lead-free legislation,

there’s been a lot of talk about making the switch.

Here’s the truth: T&S was the fi rst fi xture, faucet

and fi tting manufacturer to convert its entire line

to lead-free alloys back in 2010.

So when you purchase a T&S faucet, the peace of

mind that comes with lead-free compliance

is built right in. No worries. No hassle.

LEAD-FREE. WORRY-FREE. HASSLE-FREE.
