EXPOSITION: Annemarie, Ellen and Kirtsi were racing down the streets of Copenhagen after school one day. They were stopped and questioned by German soldiers. Conflict: The Nazis are “relocating” all Jews. The Nazis retrieved a list of all Jews from a local synagogue. Ellen and her family are in danger. Peter takes Mr. and Mrs. Rosen into safe-hiding. Ellen stays with the Johansens. Soldiers come to the house to search for the Rosens, and almost discover Ellen! Mrs. Johansen takes Annemarie, Kirsti, and Ellen to Uncle Henrik’s house by train. Soldiers board the train to question the passengers. Mrs. Johansen and the girls finally reach Uncle Henrik’s house for the night of mourning, for Dear Aunt Birte. Soldiers come to the house to question the gathering. CLIMAX: Ellen and the others are able to escape as Annemarie finally delivers the “package” to Uncle Henrik after racing through the woods and escaping the Nazi soldiers. Uncle Henrik safely delivers his “package” to Sweden. RESOLUTION: Mrs. Johansen, Annemarie, and Kirsti return home to Papa. The war ends. Annemarie anticipates Ellen’s return.
