Time For Fishing
TEACHERS: Lauri Lonon
SUBJECT: Math First Grade
STANDARD: 1.MD.3 Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks
OBJECTIVE (EXPLICIT): Identify time to the hour and half-hour by matching an analog and digital clock. Identify and label hour and minute hands on an analog clock. Identify and label the hour and minutes on a digital clock.

TEACHER WILL: Show an analog clockAsk:
What is this called? What are these sticks called?
(hands) What does the short hand tell? What does the long hand tell? How would I show 1 o’clock? How would I show 8 o’clock? How would I show 12:30? How would I show 4:30?
Show a digital clockAsk:
What is this called? What numbers on a digital clock tells
the hour? What numbers on a digital clock tells
the minutes? How would I show 3:00? How would I show 6:00? How would I show 3:30? How would I show 7:30?
Display both clocksAsk:
How are the clocks the same? How are the clocks different?
Set a time on both clocks (do not set at the same time)Ask:
Do the clocks tell the same time? How do you know? How can I make the clocks show the
same time?Repeat as needed
STUDENT WILL: Orally answer the questions Students guide teacher through
example using clocks.

TEACHER WILL: Explain Activity: With a partner, you will play Time To Fish. Pass out 7 cards to each player. The extra cards are put into a pile, face down. Player 1 will ask Player 2 for a time card. If Player 2 has the card, then Player 1 is able to make a match and is able to go again. If Player 2 does not have the time card, they will state “Time to Fish” and Player 1 draws a card from the pile. Player 2 will then ask Player 1 for a time card. Continue until all cards are matched.
STUDENT WILL: Match an analog clock time with a
digital clock time

TEACHER WILL: Ask:
What hand on an analog clock tells the hour?
What hand on an analog clock tells the minutes?
Say: The two dots on a digital clock is called a colon.
What do the numbers before the colon tell us?
What do the numbers after the colon tell us?
Ask: What are the names of the two clocks we used today?Say: Today in math journals, write what two types of clocks we use to tell time. Thenyou will cut out the two types of clocks, label the kind of clock it is and the part of the clock that tells the hour and the minutes. You will need to have two analog clocks. One clock you will draw a time on the hour and the other clock you will draw a time on the half-hour. You will need two digital clocks. One clock you will write the time you drew on the analog clock to the hour. On the the other digital clock, you will write the time you drew on the analog clock to the half-hour.
STUDENT WILL: Partner Share:
The hand that tells the hour is the short hand.
The hand that tells the minutes is the long hand.
The numbers before the colon tell the hour.
The numbers after the colon tell the minutes.
The two clocks we used today were an analog clock and a digital clock.
Write: The two types of clocks we use are
an analog clock and a digital clock.Cut out and label: the clocksEx. Analog Clock Digital Clock
