Mooncrest Food Donation: We Did Make a Difference

It has now become tradition that the students of St. Louise de Marillac School collect food to provide a complete Thanksgiving dinner to the residents of the Mooncest Community in Coraopolis. Donations are assigned to each child in the school and collected the week before Thanksgiving. There is always a bit of anxiety…knowing that these families are relying on us…………………..but the schoolfamilies always come through in their generous spirit.

This year the school was able to feed 40 families. Each year a handful of 8th grade students accompany the adults on delivery day. It always is an experience that they have difficulty putting into words. Here are some of their comments about their experience.

“….I will never forget this experience and it should impact us to do better in our ownlives………………….”

“…..I saw old apartments in need of renovation……………….and realized some of these kids don’thave parents home when they come from school……………………..”

…………..”what I found hard to believe was that adults participated in a game at the communitycenter to win cleaning supplies, which are very expensive………………..”

“……………I learned that not everyone lives with the same comforts that we do…………..there arepeople who actually have no food…….”

“………….the Felician Sisters do so much to help the kids in this neighborhood…………..”

“……………the Sisters create a place for the kids to come after school instead of an emptyhouse……………they help with homework and provide snacks. Thank you to all who donated. Trustme it really helps!”

Year after year we greet these families who have learned that the school community of St. Louise can be counted on.

God Bless you all for your generosity. We already look forward to next year!

2015 Jesse Tree Advent Reflections

Tuesday, December 1st

The Jesse Tree represents Jesus’ family tree and tells the story of God’s plan to bring a Savior into the world. It begins with creation and continues through the Old Testament and into the New Testament up until the birth of Christ. During Advent we will be reading a daily Scripture passage and unveiling a symbol for the day’s Jesse tree ornament. This symbol will be placed on our Jesse tree in the school lobby as well as on the smaller Jesse trees in grades K-3. These symbols are to remind us how the Advent season is connected with the faithfulness of God throughout history.

Today’s Scripture reading comes from Genesis 1:31 – “God looked at everything He had made, and He found it very good.”

The first Jesse Tree ornament is a dove, reminding us of the peace and harmony of creation as God intended.

Wednesday, December 2nd

Today’s reading for our Jesse Tree comes from Genesis 3:6 – “The woman saw the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”

The Jesse Tree symbol for this reading is an apple, representing original sin. Christ is called the “second” or “new” Adam because He brought in a new creation, forgiving sin and restoring humanity to God’s grace.

Thursday, December 3rd

Our reading for our Jesse Tree is taken from Genesis 8:15-17 – “Then God said to Noah: ‘Go out of the ark, together with your wife and sons and your sons’ wives. Bring out with you every living thing that is with you – all bodily creatures, be they birds or animal or creeping things of the earth – and let them abound on the earth, breeding and multiplying on it.”

The Jesse Tree ornament showing the ark reminds us that although God was displeased with the evil of the men and women He had created; He also saw the best in us and renewed His covenant with us through forgiveness and mercy.

Page 11: Please&take&time&toreadall&of&the&information …stlouiseschoolpa.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Week-15... · 2016. 10. 18. · 2015 Jesse Tree Advent Reflections Tuesday, December

Friday, December 4th Today’s Jesse Tree reading comes from Genesis 15:5 – “He took him outside and said, ‘Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so, ‘he added, ‘shall your descendants be.’ “ The ornament for today’s reading is a field of stars, representing God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants will be as many as the stars and they will become the chosen people of God. Monday, December 7th Today’s reading for the Jesse Tree comes from Genesis 28: 12-15 – “Then he had a dream; a stairway rested on the ground, with its top reaching to the heavens; and God’s messengers were going up and down on it. And there was the Lord standing beside him and saying, ‘…in you and your descendants all the nations of the earth shall find blessing. Know that I am with you; I will protect you wherever you go, and bring you back to this land. I will never leave you until I have done what I promised you.’ “ The symbol for the Jesse Tree ornament is a ladder, representing the ladder in Jacob’s dream. This ladder reunited the earth to heaven and reminds us of God’s promise to never leave us. Tuesday, December 8th Today’s ornament is of Mary, the Immaculate Conception, and who we celebrate today. In preparation for Jesus to enter the world, God created Mary, His mother, to be free from original sin. This also explains why the Church celebrates Mary’s birthday on September 8th, nine months from her Immaculate Conception on December 8th. Wednesday, December 9th Today’s reading for our Jesse Tree is taken from Genesis 41:47-49 – “During the seven years of plenty, when the land produced abundant crops, he husbanded all the food of these years of plenty that the land of Egypt was enjoying and stored it in the towns, placing in each of the crops of the fields around it. Joseph garnered grain in quantities like the sands of the sea, so vast that at last he stopped measuring it, for it was beyond measure.” Today’s ornament shows a symbol of a sack of grain. Joseph, the son of Jacob, is cast out by his brothers. Through his faith in God, he has enough food to feed all who are hungry with sacks of grain bursting at the seams.

Page 12: Please&take&time&toreadall&of&the&information …stlouiseschoolpa.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Week-15... · 2016. 10. 18. · 2015 Jesse Tree Advent Reflections Tuesday, December

Thursday, December 10th Our reading for our Jesse Tree is taken from Exodus 3:2-10 – “As he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush, though on fire, was not consumed…God called out to him from the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!...Come, now! I will send you to Pharaoh to lead my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt. ‘ “ Our Jesse Tree ornament reveals the burning bush, reminding us that God fulfills His promise to free the Israelites from slavery. Friday, December 11th Our Jesse Tree reading comes from 1 Samuel 3:19 – “Samuel grew up, and the Lord was with him, not permitting any word of his to be without effect.” Samuel, son of Eli, was repeatedly called by God. When at last he recognized the Lord’s call, he listened without fail, and proclaimed the coming of Christ the King who would have power over all earthly kings. Today’s ornament shows a crown to symbolize Christ as the everlasting King. Monday, December 14th Today’s reading for our Jesse Tree comes from 1 Samuel 16:11-13 – “Then Samuel asked Jesse, ‘Are these all the sons you have?’ Jesse replied, ‘There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep.’…Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them…The Lord said, ‘There – anoint him, for this is he!’ Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in his hand, anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and from that day on, the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David.” Today’s ornament is that of s shepherd’s crook. David was first a shepherd of sheep and then called to be a shepherd of God’s people. Jesus is a descendant of King David which is a promise God made in Isaiah 11:1 that states, “But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom.” Tuesday, December 15th Our reading for our Jesse Tree today is from Isaiah 9:1 – “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone.” The white candle ornament symbolizes the light of Christ that the prophet Isaiah proclaims will save us. It is through Christ that we are brought out of the darkness of sin.

Page 13: Please&take&time&toreadall&of&the&information …stlouiseschoolpa.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Week-15... · 2016. 10. 18. · 2015 Jesse Tree Advent Reflections Tuesday, December

Wednesday, December 16th We now enter into the New Testament and today’s reading comes from Luke 1:30-33 – “Then the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” The white lily on today’s ornament symbolizes motherhood, new life and resurrection – hope for the future, as the angel, Gabriel, announces to Mary that she will be the mother of our savior, Jesus. Thursday, December 17th Today’s Jesse Tree reading is from Luke 1:63 – “John is his name.” When Elizabeth gave birth to a son, family and friends expected him to be named after his father, Zechariah. But Zechariah, unable to speak, wrote on a tablet, as seen on today’s ornament, that the child should be named John. Because of his obedience, Zechariah regained his voice, and announced the anticipation of the coming of the Lord. Friday, December 18th Today’s Jesse Tree reading is from Luke 3:16 – “John answered them all saying, ‘I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” Today’s Jesse Tree ornament symbolizes a scallop shell, a traditional symbol of baptism. John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus, proclaims the coming of a savior and renewed life for all through the repentance of sins. Monday, December 21st Today’s reading for our Jesse Tree comes from Matthew 1:20-22 – “…the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be Afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to call him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’ “ Joseph trusted God that Mary had conceived a child through the Holy Spirit and would bear the Savior who would bring salvation to all. The hammer on today’s ornament represents Joseph’s job as a carpenter and his unique role in the story of our salvation.

Page 14: Please&take&time&toreadall&of&the&information …stlouiseschoolpa.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Week-15... · 2016. 10. 18. · 2015 Jesse Tree Advent Reflections Tuesday, December

Tuesday, December 22nd The last reading for our Jesse Tree is taken from Luke 2:10-12 – “The angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah the Lord. And this will be a sign for you; you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in manger.” Jesus Christ is born and laid in a lowly manger, shown on our ornament today. Shepherds are instructed by angels to witness the miracle of this child’s birth, to show homage and spread the good news. Merry Christmas!

The Feed the Mind Program is a fundraiser for our school that can help you meet your Family Share requirement or reduce your tuition. By shopping with gift cards for everyday purchases like food, clothing and entertainment, you can reduce your tuition and/or Family Share requirement from the retailer rebates. It is easy to use and we encourage all school families to participate.

Orders are accepted every day at www.stl-fundraising.com and the LeGras Parish Office or through the weekly family folder. You can find more information about ordering on our school website at www.stlouiseschoolpa.org under Support STL.

Last year, families that participated frequently were able to benefit from hundreds of dollars of retailer rebates that were applied to their tuition or family share.
