The Toyota Way: “Don’t Give People Rules They’re Unable to Follow”
This tip applies in many ways, but in this case it relates to the rule of never knowingly passing
defects to following processes.
This involves more than just telling people not to do it.
What do they do if they find a defect? Who do they call? Where do they put it?
If these issues are not defined, the people will be confused and conflicted. They want to do the
right thing and follow instructions, but if it isn’t possible to follow the rule and get the job done
effectively, they will choose to get the job done and violate the rule.
Watch to see what happens. Try the task yourself to get firsthand experience. Don’t assume
that people break the rules because they don’t care. Maybe there is not a good system for
helping people to follow the rules.

Thank you to Drew Johnston for putting on another great golf weekend in sunny
Penticton!
We had a great turnout for the Wine & Cheese Social; thanks go out to Penticton
Foundry for sponsoring this event.
The spouses wine tour was also a hit, but next time around we might consider cutting down on
the number of wineries we plan to visit.

Everyone had a great time at our Oct. 3rd tour of BC Place Stadium and watched our Vancouver
Whitecaps FC beat Chivas USA 4 to 0!
Thank you to Taralynn Reburn of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC for setting up this great stadium tour and soccer game, and to Brian
Griffin, the Director of Facility Op-erations, for describing in detail the new roof and stadium up-grades, from start to finish.
One of their biggest challenges was to upgrade the stadium to the new building code, especially for earthquake safety. At lot
had changed in the building code since BC Place was originally built in 1981. We were also impressed by the immense weight of the entire roof structure.
Of course, we were not pleased to learn that all
the castings were sourced from Europe, e.g., France, Spain and Turkey. Despite news in the media to the con-trary, our local foundries were involved in the bidding pro-
cess early on and were shut out of the procurement for castings for the roof and seismic upgrades.

OSU Discovers Sweet Approach to Sand Casting, November 14, 2012 Based on a new discovery by researchers at Oregon State University, Corvallis, Ore., the metalcasting industry may soon develop a sweet tooth. Experts in adhe-sion science in the OSU College of Forestry have discovered and applied for a patent on using sugar as a binder for metalcasting sand molds. “We were surprised that simple sugar could bind sand together so strongly,” said Kaichang Li, an OSU professor of wood science and engineering. “Sugar and oth-er carbohydrates are abundant, inexpensive, food-grade materials. The binder systems we’ve developed should be much less expensive than existing sand bind-ers and not have toxicity concerns.”
