Please Help Have-A-Heart
The Commission on Aging and Friends of Isabella Seniors are
asking you to “Have-a-Heart” and make a donation to support the
2020 Have-A-Heart Project.
The “Have a Heart” project depends solely on the generosity
of Isabella County residents. There are no federal, state or local funds
used for this program. As in the past, the COA expects to assist
between 75 to 100 older adult residents in Isabella County with the
high costs of prescription medications, warm winter clothing, and
food. If you have questions or would like more information, please
contact the Commission on Aging at (989) 772-0748.
Please fill out and return the form below. Every dollar helps
us reach our goal. Thank You in advance for your willingness to help
our friends and neighbors.

Question: I am a full-time caregiver for my sister.
It is becoming more and more difficult for me to
care for her as her condition declines and she
needs more total/24/7 care. I am losing my own
strength and don’t get much sleep. She has a very
low income and doesn’t have the funds to pay for a
nursing home. Is there any help out there for us?
Answer: If you are no longer able to care for
your sister in your home, there are still options
available. Those services might enable you to
continue to care for her there. You can call the
Commission on Aging and one of the Case
Managers and Caregiver Support Specialist can
work together to assist you in determining the next
steps. She may qualify for assistance from a
Waiver Program or PACE to help keep her at
home or Long Term Care if keeping her home isn’t
an option. The Caregiver Support Specialist can
also assist you with some supportive tools so you
can continue in your role as caregiver. Please don’t
hesitate to call us Monday through Friday from
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

February … a month to recognize and show
our love to our special Valentines and cheer on our
favorite football team in the Super Bowl! If you
are a football fan, I hope that your team wins!
February is also “American Heart Month”
as proclaimed by President Lyndon Johnson in
1963. Here are some ways that you can observe
and promote it:
Get Moving!
Whether it is a walk, exercising in your
home, or participating in an organized exercise
program, just get moving! Check out our fitness
class schedule in this paper – all are welcome and encouraged to take part!
Eat a Tasty, Heart-Healthy Meal.
Did you know that all of the lunches prepared and served here at the
Isabella County Commission on Aging and all of our satellite sites, are heart-
healthy and dietitian-approved? We would love to have you join us for lunch.
See the menu in this paper to see what great meals are planned for the month.
Wear Red. Go Red. Glow Red.
The American Heart Association (AHA) encourages everyone to
participate in “National Wear Red Day for Women” on the first Friday in
February to bring attention to heart disease.
With the winter weather upon us, we hope to be the warm place that you
look forward to visiting for coffee or lunch; playing cards, billiards, bingo or
other games; taking part in a fitness class or joining others with the same hobby
(music, needle crafting, quilting, woodworking, dancing etc.) or just socializing
with others. We love to hear the laughter and stories and see the smiles of all of
our guests. We are here for you, and we want you to enjoy your facility here at
the Isabella County Commission on Aging.

• Follow-up with Central Michigan University doctors
• Help train doctors of the future

Caregiver Support Group The monthly COA Caregiver Support
Group will meet on Tuesday, February 18 from
12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the COA Craft Room.
“Peer support provides caregivers
dedicated time and space to be with other
caregivers dealing with similar issues -- a place to
receive and give support and a safe place to vent..
Support groups allow caregivers to focus on their
needs, not just the needs of the care recipient. It
aligns with the philosophy when the oxygen mask
drops in an airplane cabin. We always put on our
own mask first before helping the person who
needs us.” (Family Caregivers of British
Columbia)
All caregivers are welcome. If you have
questions, call Mary Ellen Walsh, Caregiver
Support Specialist, at 989-953-4449.

Gold Key Volunteer Opportunities
A Friend is Only a Phone
Call Away
The Isabella County Commission on
Aging offers a FREE Friendly Calling
service to Isabella County older adults and
their families. The Friendly Calling
program is available to any older adult who
would like or benefit from a daily telephone
call. Calls can be temporary while
recuperating from an illness or calls can be
arranged on a permanent basis. Older
individuals do not need to be homebound.
Perhaps they are isolated and would just
like someone to say hello to them each day.
A trained Gold Key Volunteer will
make regular telephone contact with a
program participant, checking the older
adult’s safety. If the older adult does not
answer his/her telephone, the Volunteer
will contact COA staff who will try to reach
an established emergency contact. If none
of the contacts are available, COA Staff
will attempt to contact the participant.
Emergency services (9-1-1) may be
contacted if necessary. If you know of
someone who would benefit from this
service, please call 989-772-0748.
Medicare Seminar The Commission on Aging offers a
monthly seminar covering the basics of
Medicare. The seminars are offered on
the last Monday of each month at 1:00
p.m. in the COA Craft Room.
The seminars are intended for
those that are new to Medicare, who may
be looking at retiring, or for those needing
more information on how their current
plan works. If you plan to attend, please
call the COA at (989) 772-0748 and
register for the seminar, as there is limited
seating. There is no cost for the seminar.
Happy Winter! I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful snow and weather
lately! As this weather can also bring higher heating costs and weather-related expenses,
we are looking forward to teaming up with Friends of Isabella Seniors for our annual
Have a Heart Project. This project is funded by donations from kind hearted individuals
and families, and supported by volunteers throughout the county. This year, we are
hoping to be able to give grocery/gas assistance and cards to 89 individuals to help
offset high winter costs. We could not do this without the support of our community and
we are so grateful for this assistance!
The Gold Key Volunteer Program is also beginning our annual Tax Preparation
appointments on Wednesday, February 5. We are happy to continue partnering with
AARP who trains volunteers to be able to help file Michigan state and Federal taxes.
There will be various appointment dates available through the beginning of April. If you
are interested in making an appointment, please call the Commission on Aging to
schedule.
Have a fabulous winter season and stay warm!

Telling My Story Sheila Carroll, Instructor, will provide Six 1
hour sessions on Thursdays, February 20 to
March 26, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the
Craft Room. The course will teach participants to
recall and tell important life events in order for them
to pass on the legacy of their life to their children and
grandchildren. As they develop their stories,
participants will have an opportunity to reflect on the
lesson learned and share that as part of the story. A
culminating experience would be to create one’s
story in a tangible way--recording, written story,
letter, re-enactment, scrap book page--and share it in
a presentation at the end where all are welcome to
attend.
Cost for the six week session will be $25 per
participant/story. Deadline for signups and
payment will be February 14. Please contact
Marcy Jerome, Activity Program Coordinator, to

on the different programs and care provided by the
ICMC facility.
Following the presentation, we will have our
general business meeting. There will be a 50/50

coming up in 2020, as it is also an election year. I
strongly encourage members as well as guests to
attend to get informed. If there are any questions,

Therapeutic Bodywork with Amanda Pardee Feeling like you need that little something extra for your partner this
Valentine’s Day? Join Amanda Pardee, (Naturopathic Student), on
Wednesday, February 12 at 11:00 a.m. in Room A, as she describes how
to perform some basic therapeutic bodywork! We’ll be going over a few
topics about how to de-stress from our everyday life and when you leave
you’ll be able to apply these learned techniques to your partner for that
relaxing moment they’ll appreciate. If giving a massage doesn’t work for
you, I’ll also be discussing the different types of massage, how they’re
beneficial to your health, what to expect when you’re ready to receive one,
and even where you can go to get it!
