February 4, 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, Congratulations! Your child has expressed an interest in participating in the PVES Science Fair. This event will take place along with the PTA Science Night in the New Gym from 6:30-8:00 PM on March 18th. Over the next few weeks, your fourth grader will plan a project, implement it, and display the results for the school community. Attached, you will find a timeline that will help your child organize his/her work over the next few weeks. Students may choose to do an experiment, a demonstration of a scientific principle, a research project, a presentation of a collection, or a presentation on a scientific apparatus. We do encourage students to use the scientific method that they have learned in class to perform a scientific experiment. The scientific method includes:

• Purpose- the purpose of the project is clearly stated • Hypothesis or Prediction- this must be clearly stated • Materials list- a list of all supplied used including any books, articles, movies • Procedure- the list of steps taken to carry out the experiment must be written using numbered steps • Conclusion- clearly stated

I, along with Ms. Mistretta, Mrs. Broas, our school library aide, and our PVHS Science Honor Society high students will be available to meet with fourth grade students weekly to check in with them. We will assist them in their research and answer any questions that they may have. These meetings will be held in the library during lunch/recess times, along with several after-school sessions with our high school scientists. The dates for these voluntary afternoon meetings, which will take place from 3:30-4:15 in the elementary school, will be: February 5, 2015 February 12, 2015

February 26, 2015 March 5, 2015 March 12, 2015

Please note that if you would like to have your fourth grader stay to work with the high school science students on one or all of the above dates, your child must bring in a note giving permission, and you must be able to pick your child up promptly at 4:15. No bus transportation will be provided at this time. Ms. Mistretta and I look forward to supervising these after school sessions. If you have any questions or concerns while your child is preparing for the Science Fair, I am happy to answer them for you. I can be reached at (845) 528-8092 or via email at [email protected]. Thank you, Margaret Podesta Principal

This program is all about “FUN”. Children love games and the element of surprise. Each week

(for 4 weeks) I will bring my surprise box, which contains various objects. “Hammy”, my monkey

puppet will reach inside the box, prompting us to play a particular game, read a story, sing a song,

stretch, draw...all types of neat stuff. The games and activities are designed to facilitate decision

making skills, problem solving, and self- confidence. Of course, there will also be lots and lots of

laughter. So don’t miss out on all the fun, since you never know ... What’s in the Box!!

Please complete and detach the registration below. Make checks payable to PVPR. Send payment and registration to Putnam Valley Parks and Rec. Or send to PV Elementary School with your child, mark envelope “PVPR – What’s in the Box?“ and your child’s name.
