Please come in, get
your packet and
QUIETLY take a seat. • THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO TALKING
ALLOWED UNTIL YOU ARE TOLD TO DO SO! If you talk, your grade will be docked points!
Learning Objective
• Today our learning objective is #4: I will compare different type of communication and which has the best affect on my personal relationship and discuss how to appropriately express my emotions
Gratitude Journal
• Write down 5 things you are grateful for today.
• Remember-they cannot be the same as ones you have done previous days!
Silent Ball!
• In a minute, everyone will sit on their tables/desks.
• We are going to throw a ball around to different people.
• You are out if you fail to catch the ball OR if you throw a pass that is uncatchable. When you are out, sit in your chair.
• For hard calls, we will have a class vote. • The last three people up gets candy!
Rules

• You cannot throw it back to someone who just threw it to you.

Using Communication To
resolve conflicts
Think Win-Win
• Thinking about how everyone can win • The opposite of thinking win-win is only
thinking of yourself • Bad Example: Your mom asks you to clean
your room, but instead you just watch TV. (You get what you want, but Mom is mad)
• Good Example: You help clean up quickly and then ask if you can go back to watching TV
Active Listening
• Learn HOW to listen!! – Listen to the reasons for being upset
– Make sure you understand from THEIR point of view.
– Repeat and ask if you understood correctly
– Ask if anything remains unspoken
– Resist the temptation to interrupt or interject.
Use “I” Messages
• This is expressing how you REALLY feel.
• Four Steps to an “I” Message: – 1. I feel…”
– 2. “When you…”
– 3. “What I need you to do…”
– 4. “Because…”
Be Assertive
• Instead of fighting back, remain calm and express how you’re feeling.
• Bad Example: You get in trouble at home, so you yell at your parents and then slam the door to your room.
• Good Example: Take a quick break, then ask your parents if you can discuss the problem calmly. You both listen to each other.
Tips
• Make the relationship the priority • Focus on the present (don’t use past
arguments, disagreements etc.)
• Pick your battles • Be willing to forgive (EVERYBODY makes mistakes,
especially when communicating)
• Know when to let go (or agree to disagree. You are not going to change their opinion so let it go!)

Inside OUt
• Now-we are going to move onto emotions.
• The best (and more fun!) way to teach this is to watch the movie “Inside Out”
• In your packet, during the movie, answer the questions. We will watch this today and finish next time!
• Don’t forget-NO TALKING! (And no you cannot move by your friends!)
You can talk
from now on!
HAVE A GREAT DAY! • Hot potato now-you cannot hold it
longer than 3 seconds
