,& \Mäs§§( ffisä x§a* Dark Side,After several presidential detours, Benjamin Walker comes

backtothe classics in Broadway's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

by Brandon Voss

e's played the titular presidents in theblockbuster Abraham Lincoln: VampireHunter and the Broadway rock musical

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, but BenjaminWalker now faces one of his greatest challengesin leading a classic Tennessee Williams familydrama. Walker-whose previous Broadwaycredits include revivals of lnherit the Wind andLes Liaisons Dangereuses-stars as tormentedalcoholic Brick Pollitt opposite Tony winnerScarlett Johansson's Maggie in the latest revivalof Cat on a Hot Tin Roo[ which officially opensJanuary 17 at Broadway's Richard RodgersTheatre. The 3O-year-old actor-comedian dis-cusses the perils of onstage drinking and howhe's found the funny in the dysfunction.

You became an aclionstar in Ahraham Lincoln: Vampire

Hunter, andyou'll next appear 0nscreen in the HB0 filmMuhammad Ali's Areatest Fight Asyou branch out into

television and film, how important is it for you to stay

connected to the theatre?

I started out in the theatre, and l'm never goingto not be doing theatre. I love that the best lit-erature is in the theatre, and I love the people inthe theatre. I love that the theake community isa real community, whereas the movie businessis a business. I like working in that businesstoo, and I'm inspired by people in that field, but it's the legacy of the theatre that keepsdrawing me to it.

What attracted youlo Cat on a llot Tin Roof! Our director, Rob Ashford, was one of the firstguys to give me a shot. We were going to doBrigadoon together a few years ago, but it fellapart. I adore his work. He inspires me, and I

knew that I could learn a lot from him. AndScarlett's not bad eitherl Based on those twocomponents alone, l'd be interested in doingthe play even if it were toilet paper.

10

Rob Ashford is an inspired choice lor this revival,

which marks his directorial debut of a non-musical

Broadway production. He's a dir,ector-choreographer

best known for his work on shows ltke Evita, llow toSucceed, and fhoroughly Modern Millie.

Well, the play is very musical. lt is music. lt ispoetry. lt is dance. A trap of the play is to let themovement be worn down slow by the Southernheat, but these people really are like a cat on a

hot tin roof-screaming, bouncing, constantlyjumping in pain. The need for that physicalityis something Rob really understands and is

brilliant at pulling out of us.

You married actress Mamie Gummer last year. Are

you drawing 0n the new marriage, with all its ups and

downs, to enrich Brick and Maggie's relationship?Luckily my wife and I don't have that muchin common with Maggie and Brick. lLaughslBut yeah, I draw from every relationship. And

Page 13: PLAYBIr..I; - Ciaran Hinds · Wind (dir: Doug Hughes). OfT-Broadway: Spring Awakening (.dir: Michael Mayer), Arrangemenrs (dir: Christian Parker). ... Burning Blue, Virgin Alexander,

Scarlett also brings so much from her own lifethat really creates a lovely chemistry.

What's lhe greatest challenge In playing this iconic role?Finding a pee break. I have to keep drinking, refilling my glass, and l'm onstage the wholetime! I might need to hide a spittoon in thecorner. Other than that, where to begin?Tennessee Williams is the best, but he,scertainly the most challenging writer that l,veworked on in a long time.

As far as Brick's heavy drinking goes, how methodhave you been in your research?

Oh, my research on that has been well donefor years. l'm typecast, if nothing else.

You're also a stand-up comic and host of a varietyseries called Find the Funny. Are you finding the

humor in Cat on a llot Iin Roof?

The more time I spend withmy comedian friends, themore I realize that truly funnypeople are ones with a reallydeep inner darkness. Brick isdefinitely stewing over somepainful stuff, and oftentimespeople can only release thatthrough humor, sarcasm, orbeing cutting in a way that

causes nervous laughter. Tennessee Williamsis a funny writer in the same way as Chekhov;if the audience isn't laughing, you've probablymissed the point. There's a fine line betweendrama and comedy that we walk, and life isIike that too.

Some theatergoers may compare your performance asBrick with your performance as Andrew Jackson. lt'seasy to dismiss those characters as having nothing in

common, but have you noticed any similarities?Yeah, actually. They're both very conflictedmen at crossroads in lheir tives, and theyhave to make huge decisions that will affectthe legacy of their families. Of course, theshows are very different. When a cell phonerang during Andrew Jackson, I could just yell,"Shut off your phone, you prick!" I have to get

o

t1,

out of that habit
