We Did It For You! Women’s Journey Through History is a musical about the women who fought for our rights in America, told by the very people who were there. As you saw in your play-reading workshop experience, the characters are summoned forth by Lilly Ledbetter to teach a young high school student about all that came before her.

Our goal with We Did It For You! is to encourage women, young and old, to take action and participate in politics, business, and civil rights, to bring about a more balance society.

Summary of discussion:

1.Colleges for men first opened in 1636. It was 200 years before women could start going to college, yet more women are now going to college than men.2.It was ordinary women who broke out of their cultural constraints in order to further the cause of women’s rights.3.Proponents of the Equal Rights Amendment fight for equality while an underlying assumption in our society is that women need protection. These ideas are in conflict.4.We live in a patriarchy (which is over 5,000 years old now). As a result, women’s values have been left out of public discourse. .
