FromtheProductionsChairpersonMarch12,2016DearBarleySheafPlayersMember,WelcometothePlayProposalPacketforour2016-2017Season!DuringourGeneralMembershipMeetingonMarch12,we’llbeworkingtogethertoselecttheshowsfortheupcomingseason.Thankyouforyourparticipationinthis,oneofthemostimportanteventsoftheyear!Asyouprobablyknow,BarleySheafwouldnotexistwithoutaseasonthatattractsmembersandotherswhoarewillingtoputthetimeandeffortintocreatingsuccessfulshows,aswellasthoseinthecommunity,whomakeupthevitallynecessaryaudiences.Firstofall,aheartfeltthankyoutothedirectorswhohavesubmittedproposalsfortheupcomingseason:GiaAngeli-Myers,JeffCronin,RobDeRemigio,AmandaFrangoulis,LindsayFranklin,GregMorton,GlenEricReed,ChristineRobinson,CindySchneider,andDougSchultz.Directingisnotaneasytaskandweexpressourdeepestgratitudetothosewhoarewillingtotakeonthechallenge.Wehaveexcellentchoicesthisyearandagreatshotatachievingabalancedseason.Forthoseofyounotfamiliarwiththisnotion,startingwiththe2002–2003season,theBoardofDirectorsapprovedaformatforastructuredseasonofplays.Baseduponpriorexperience,itwasdecidedthatthiswasthebestwaytomaximizetheuseofthetheater,itsmembership,anditsresources,whilestillstrivingtoensuretherevenuenecessarytokeepusupandrunning.Abriefrecapofthestructureandtheshowsbeingproposedforeachslotispresentedbelow(alsonotedistherehearsalscheduleforeachslotnextseason):

allottedfiveminutes—includingtimeforquestions—topresenther/hisshow.Followingthepresentations,allmemberspresentduringrollcall(heldatthebeginningoftheGeneralMembershipMeeting)willhavethechancetovotebyballot.Typically,thevotingtakesplaceinthefollowingorder:

Dependingonhowcloselyyouwerelookingatthelistofshowsbeingproposed,youprobablynoticedthatthereareonlytwomusicalsbeingproposed.ItisBarleySheaf’spolicytopresentatleastonemusicaleachseason,withapreferencefortwo,thoughitisnotrequiredthatwepresenttwomusicals.Therefore,oneofthesetwomusicalsMUSTbeapartoftheseason.OneisbeingproposedonlyforMarchandtheotheronlyforJune.Becausewemusthaveatleastonemusical,ourfirstvotewillsimplybeforwhichmusicalgetsintotheseason.Themusicalthatisnotchoseninthatvotewillthenbepartofthepooloftheothernon-musicalsfortheslotforwhichitisavailable.Oncethe“required”musicalhasbeenvotedin,votingwillproceedbyslot.We’llvoteforeitherMarchorSeptemberfirst(dependingonwhethertheMarchorJunemusicalisvotedin),thenmovingontotheJuneslot(ifstillopen),theOctober/Novemberslot,andfinally,theApril/Mayslot.Whenwegettothevoting,pleasetakeamomentortwotoremembertheimportanceofourselectionprocess.Whileit’seasytogetcaughtupinvotingforshowsthathaveagoodroleforyou,pleaserecognizethatweallshouldtrytothinkaboutwhat’sinthebestinterestofBarleySheaf.Therefore,pleaserememberyou’renotvotingeachslotinavacuumandshouldtakeintoconsiderationanumberoffactors,includingthestructuredseasonconcept,showsalreadyintheseasonandtheircasting/designrequirements,thesurroundingslots,achievingabalanceingenre,showbudgets,etc.asyoucasteachvote.AsProductionsChairperson,Iseeitasmyroletotryandpointoutthingslikethisaswe’revoting.WhenIdoso,itisnotintendedtobeanendorsementofoneshow/directoroveranother,rather,areminderofsomeofthefactorstoconsider.Inorderforashowtobevotedinbythemembership,wearegoingtobeseekingamajorityofthevotes(i.e.ashowwillneedvotesfromonehalfofthetotalnumbersofvotersplusone-halforone,tobeselectedforitsslot).Intheeventthatwehavethreeormoreshowsupforoneslot,andnoshowreceivesamajorityofthevotes,wewilldroptheshowreceivingthefewestvotesandvoteagain.Thiswillcontinueuntilwehaveaselectionbymajorityvote.Intheeventofatieforlastplaceinvoting,wewillhaveavotebetweenthosetwoshowstodecidewhichonegetstobeontheballotforthenextroundorperhapsbothshowswillbedroppedifthereisasizeablegapbetweenthemandthenext-highestvotedshow(s).Oncethefiveshowshavebeenselected,wewillbevotingononealternatenon-musical(ifbothmusicalsarevotedin,therewillnotbeaback-upmusical,andifonlyoneisvotedin,thentheotherwillbethede-factoalternatemusical).Pleasetaketimetoperusetheproposalsandthinkaboutyourchoices.I’mdelightedthatyouaretakingthetimetoparticipateintheprocess,andIwishtothankyouforyourinterestin,andsupportof,theBarleySheafPlayers!Sincerely,

ArsenicandOldLacehasbeenafavoriteproductionofminesinceIwasatheatermajorincollege.Thedarkhumormixedwithbeingaperiodpiecehasalwaysspokentome.IbelievethatBarleySheafplayersistheperfectlocationforthisshow,aswearebasedinahistorichomewhichwilladdtothecharmoftheproduction.IwenttoDeSalesUniversityandstudiedTheaterandwasontheactinganddirectingtrack.Icompletedtwodirectingclassesanddirectedfourproductions.Idirectedtwoshowsforeachclass.Partoftheclassesincludedhavingmyworkjudgedanonymouslybyoneofmypeers,bymyprofessor,andcritiquedbymyclassmates.Basedonthefeedbackandthesuccessoftheproductionishowmygradewasdetermined.Sinceitwasastudentbasedprogram,wedidnothaveaproductionstaff.Iwas,inessence,thejackofalltrades.Wedidworkwithatechnicianwhoranlightsandsoundduringourtechandproduction.Icontrolledmyownbudget,createdtherehearsalschedule,bookedtherehearsalspaceformyactressesandactors,selectedandbuilttheircostumes,designedtheset,andmore.

Production

Iwouldliketohaveatotalof8performances,2ofwhichareSundaymatineessothatourmembersandsubscriberswhodonotwanttodriveatnighthavetheabilitytodoso.IwanttheaudiencetowalkintoourtheaterandfeelliketheyareinMarthaandAbby’shome.Thebackbulletinboardwillbeadramaturgicalboardandbeneathitwouldbeatablewiththeproductionstills,allblackandwhite,intimeappropriatepictureframes.Theendofthetablewillhavealampthatispluggedinandabouquetofsilkflowers.Thestagewillhaveanextensiontoallowtheactressesandactorsenough“play”space,andarampwillbeplacedstageleftsothatvariouscharactersenteringandexitingthehomecancomefromthebasementandphysicallywalkuptothehome.Allofthedoorsandthewindowwheretheboxseatislocatedwillbeabletoopen.Thehomewillbefurnishedwithfurnitureandknick-knacksthatarecurrentlyhousedinourattic.Pictureswilllinethewalls,curtainswillhangfromthewindows,falseflowerswillbelocatedaroundthehome,andbookswilllitterasmallbookshelf.Achandelierwillhangonthesetandwillbelitforthedurationoftheproduction.Theflatswillbepaintedasifitwerewallpaper,crownmoldingwilltopitofftoprovidethefeelofanolderhome.Thestaircasewillbelocatedonstagerightandwillextendintotheatticforentrancesandexits.Timeappropriatemusicwillbeplayingthroughoutthepre-show,intermission,andpostshow.

RehearsalsAsadirector,andanactor,Ibelievethatyourbodyandyourvoiceisyourinstrumentandshouldbemaintained.Ifollowholisticpracticesandwillhavephysicalwarmupsateachrehearsalforthefirstfifteenminutes.Itwillincludephysical,andvocalwarmups,andanoccasionalgame.Thefirstrehearsalwillbeameetandgreetandscriptreadthrough.Thesecondrehearsalwouldbedissectingthecharacters,theirrelationshipswithoneanotherandreviewingthedramaturg’sresearch.Thethirdrehearsalonwouldberehearsalswithblockingandwalkingthephysicalspace.

ImportantBudgetNotes
