W atching Gary and Phil Neville in charge of Valencia it is quite

clear that being a coach isn’t just about doing things right – the Neville’s have a huge coaching experience to call on but putting it into action isn’t always easy.

Jose Mourinho warned the Sky Sports TV analyst that it isn’t as easy as drawing on the screen with a pen and then rubbing it out. Decisions have to be made by the coach during games to bring on substitutes or change tactics if the team is losing and even change tactics if the team is winning.

As the head coach of Valencia Gary Neville has worked very hard to create a team that is successful in the Spanish La Liga. Against Real Madrid the Neville’s hard working team managed to draw 2-2 but that signaled the end for Real manager Rafa Benitez. Real were third in the table only a few points off the top but crucially the team’s above them were fierce rivals Barcelona and local rivals Atletico Madrid.

The Neville’s have got a good young team in their grasp, and

they certainly looked as good as Madrid when I watched them play. Gareth Bale and Ronaldo did not boss the game like I thought they would as Valencia hassled and chased them all over the pitch so they didn’t have an easy ride.

It is watching coaches like Benitez and Neville that make you realize being a coach things don’t always run smoothly. It isn’t always easy to make the right decisions even when you have played the game at the highest level, been coached by top coaches and worked with coaches at the highest level. So what hope does your average coach have?

And don’t think that you don’t face the same pressure that they do it just comes in different forms – parents and young players! Don’t allow the pressures of coaching to put you off – there to are good times and bad times when it comes to success on the pitch.

I hope you enjoy this week’s issue and that it helps you in your coaching.

K evin De Bruyne’s stunning calendar year has been recognised by France Football

with the Manchester City star named in their XI of 2015.

The 24-year-old is the only representative from the Premier League to be included with seven La Liga stars making the team.

De Bruyne, who joined City in a £54million deal from Wolfsburg in the summer, has enjoyed a wonderful 2015 - where he flourished at the latter club before earning his move to England.

Former Chelsea manager José Mourinho must wonder why he let the young star join Wolfsburg in January 2014. He was never given a chance to prove himself at

Stamford Bridge, but that transfer was the making of him.

De Bruyne has been the breakout star of 2015, starting it by destroying Bayern Munich in January, finishing it as the most expensive player in Manchester City’s history. Watch out because the Belgian player is only going to get better.

De Bruyne’s performance for Wolfsburg against must go down as one of the finest individual displays this year. He scored two stunning goals leaving the Brazilian centre-back Dante in a spin with his driving, twisting runs on the break.

And not many players beat Manuel Neuer so emphatically.

The forward was exceptional in Germany last season, scoring 16 goals and making

28 assists to help Dieter Hecking’s side finish second and win the German Cup. De Bruyne scored the decisive goal in the cup final against Borussia Dortmund.

He made the second-most chances in the top five European leagues last season and that persuaded City to sign him for £54m in the summer. He has settled well after returning to the Premier League, scoring frequently for his new side, and he played a pivotal role in City reaching the last 16 of the Champions League, drilling in a stoppage-time winner in the 2-1 victory over Sevilla in October.

Manuel Pellegrini, City’s manager, has admitted that spending that much money on De Bruyne was a gamble, but the player has been worth every penny so far.

WHY USE ITThis session gets midfielders to block routes into the attacking areas of the pitch.

SET UPYou need balls, bibs and cones. Set up an area 20 x 20 yards. We used 8 players and a server in the session.

HOW TO PLAYSplit your players into two teams of 4 players and you need a server. Set the players up in the two halves of the pitch and they stay in their own half. Each team must get the ball to the striker positioned on the edge of the opponents’ area. The opposition must block the ball try to win it and get it to their own player. If they block the pass they get a ball from the server. The server plays a ball into one of the teams to start.

TECHNIQUEDefenders must slide across with the path of the ball, with defensive stances showing players are able to react quickly to an attempted pass. The nearest defender must press the ball

4 Players must move in relation to each

5 Now play a 2v2 in the centre and make four small goals that

players stand behind giving each team two possible ways to score. This makes it much harder for the defending team to block the pass

This simple activity will get your players ready for a training session by focusing on their technique and accuracy with a view to passing and receiving in a match

Short Passing Grid

WHY USE ITThis activity gives you an opportunity to work with players on simple passing technique. It develops a player’s short passing technique, movement after playing the ball and receiving with an open body position.

SET UPSet up a 10-yard square with a cone in each corner. Two or three players in each corner of the square. Use two areas for a squad of 16 or more players.

HOW TO PLAYThe first person in one of the corners starts the activity by making a pass with their right foot along the outside of the square in a counterclockwise direction. After making the pass, the player follows the ball to the next group. The first person on the next cone receives the pass and continues the sequence. Play for three or four minutes or until you feel the players have had enough repetition.

TECHNIQUEThis activity emphasizes the correct passing technique over a short distance with the inside of the foot. The pass should be firm and along the ground and the receiver opens their body to set up the next pass with one touch.

Five Minute Warm-UpRunning and dribbling with the ball

How to do it> Put two players inside the square and arrange the others around the four corners.

> The players on the outside must make one-two wall passes along the width of the square and dribble along the length of the square.

> Players should sidefoot pass to the wall passers who must make sure they control and pass back in to the running players so they don’t have to break their stride.

> Change the two wall passers regularly.

> The players must work for a set time period.

1 The first player dribbles the ball across to the other side of

the square then plays a one-two with one of the servers

2 Make sure players are using good passing

technique when they are making one-twos

3 Receiving the ball and getting it out of the feet with one touch is

vital to the success of the session

This five minute fitness drill can be used during your training sessions for a quick break to help coaching points sink in, or as an incentive for a drinks break

Five Minute FitnessContinuous ladders

How to do it> Arrange your players in to two groups.

> The first player on both groups works the ladder.

> The players must go through the ladders making sure each foot goes in every rung of the ladder.

> The next player starts once the previous player has come across to join their group.

> Run for five minutes continuously – players rest in the queue.

A s a core skill, passing is probably the thing you are working on most at training every week – it

comes with the territory. But the one thing you have to do is make sure you get the right sessions, so players have every type of pass at their disposal.

It’s therefore important to plan out your sessions throughout the season, where you focus on passing and what it can offer your team. One way to develop your sessions is to see how the focus of the session could be changed during the season.

For example, you can gradually evolve and change the focus of a passing session. If you start with a general passing session where the focus is on players passing out from the back and generally passing the ball to each other using a side-foot technique with control and accuracy, over time you will want to move onto something more focused.

You could narrow the focus of your

subsequent session onto short passing, and then the focus could be tightened even further to short attacking passes. In this way you can build on the passing focus and make sure all the passing boxes are ticked over a series of sessions.

In the activity that follows, we look at how support and movement work

together to make passing easier, in a fun game your players will love. Again you can see a shift in focus from passing in a small-sided game. Here the session makes passing the main coaching point and helps players to understand the different ways to pass and how to make life easier for their team-mates by supporting the pass.

If you want players to pass better, you need to make sure they understand how to develop a range of passing skills. And to do that, you need to focus and progress your sessions

Focus Your Passing

COACHING CORE SKILLS

To make sure your players improve their passing game, they must understand some of the basics…> Your players must be able to use both feet to pass the ball.> Players should use suitable weight for each kind of pass.> Receiving players should take the pass on the back foot with one touch.> When receiving the ball, players should open up their body to the passer.> Early movement off the ball is important to receive a pass successfully.> To ensure opponents don’t gain possession, players should make crisp turns when receiving the ball.> There should be constant communication between passers and receivers.

WHY USE ITThe triangle in midfield is the engine of a smothering possession game. This exercise teaches your team to feed the ball to the triangle and support those players.

SET UPMark out a 20-yard diameter circle or use your centre circle. We used 12 players.

HOW TO PLAYSet up play so you have three defenders in the centre. Three midfielders should join them, with the rest of the midfielders around the perimeter.

The midfielders try to keep possession. They earn a point for every pass into a central player that is safely returned to the perimeter players. The perimeter players cannot move from the edge, although they can be tackled by the defenders. Perimeter players can pass to one-another.

The server restarts play by passing to a midfielder in the centre or to their team-mates on the perimeter.

The defenders attempt to win the ball and kick it out of the grid. Rotate the defenders every minute.

TECHNIQUEMovement and timing of passes and runs are key to the session. Central midfielders need good combination play.

1 Play starts with a perimeter player

passing the ball to a team-mate in the centre

3 Note the receiving position, with his hips

open to his fellow central players. This is critical for building coordination among central players

5 Progress the session so one player from the perimeter can move into the

centre to receive a pass if his team-mates are tightly marked. He has one touch to pass then moves back to the perimeter

4 Here the tight marking means central players

are required to play to one another after receiving from outside the circle

2 The players on the outside must move

around to support play and make the pass easier
