It always began with an idea.At a place like BalboaMagnet, the idea might bring

summer Play Date in the Park to welcome Balboa’snewest families! There will be snacks, games, artsand crafts, the opportunity to meet other Balboa kidsand parents, and most importantly, LOADS OF FUN! Don’t forget your picnic blankets and portable chairs!

If posters or signswere needed, the TAPvolunteers would help out. ABSC board member wouldhelp the group work throughthe finances or permits. Andthen the idea would beshared onbalboaparents.org, onFacebook, and through TheBalboa Beat. Pretty soon,more parents and familieswould want to volunteer.Before you knew it, our kidswere marching in a cakewalk, running as many lapsas possible in 20 minutes,submitting an original artpiece, playing hockey withthe teachers and staff, ordoing a number of otheractivities that celebrate thevery best of what the Balboacommunity is.

Teamwork -- that is howthings get done at Balboa.Though we’ve accomplisheda lot this past year, I want toencourage all parents to joina committee next year.There are many, manyopportunities to volunteeroutside of school hours, andthe bonds that developamong families and theschool faculty and staff areinvaluable.

BSC ReachesFundraising GoalsThe Balboa Spirit Club was able to meet itsfundraising obligations for the 2013-14 school year.Between the COMPASS Fund, RestaurantFundraisers, Jog-A-Thon, Spell-A-Thon, Festival ofthe Arts, and Book Fair, we were able to raise morethan the $150,000 needed to pay the salaries of ourfive enrichment instructors.

Thanks to all the people who contributed bothfinancially and through their volunteer efforts, we willbe able to start next year on a high note! We alsoappreciate the many local businesses that donatedtheir goods and services to keep our operating costs

As Andy Rooney once said,"Most of us end up with nomore than five or six peoplewho remember us. Teachershave thousands of peoplewho remember them for therest of their lives." Theirstudents will rememberthese teachers' contributionsfor a lifetime, and we wishthem a wonderful retirement!
