Inner city taxi owners and hawkers in Burgersfort on Wednesday started to ‘repair’ thepotholes in Morone Street (the portion next to Supa Save, which more often than notresembles a war zone) by filling the craters with a cement mixture (top photograph).

“The municipality mean nothing. They do not repair this road”, one of the taxi drivers toldthe newspaper. “We damage our cars and it is difficult for hawkers to trade here whencustomers cannot use this road. Now we fix it ourselves, we and the hawkers” he said.

Meanwhile elsewhere in Burgersfort large blocks had been cut out where potholes weredue to be repaired, even before it started raining last weekend. No warning signs wereerected and the blocks became deeper and deeper ...

By Wednesday repair work has started and repair teams even worked into the night (onephotograph was taken at 19:30) (and it will be interesting to see who did a more thorough job- editor).

New traffic rulesfor Burgersfort?

Skipping stop signs

Traffic in Burgersfort is one of the majorcomplaints residents have, yet many are guiltyof disobeying the rules.Platinum Gazette’s reporter happened to benear the third stop sign as you enter Burgersfortfrom Lydenburg on the R37. As he stoodcamera in hand a white vehicle quickly drovepast, ignoring the traffic sign. The camera wasswitched on motor drive and captured 10frames per second of how this traffic sign wasignored.The next moment a Burgersfort SAPS vehicleapproached. No blue lights or siren switchedon. Going between 40 and 60km per hour thepolice vehicle also ignored the stop sign. Itrushed past while being photographed at 10frames per second. (Photographs above)Following the lead of the police vehicle a bluevehicle and a red Uno did not even slow downas it approached the stop street. (Photographsleft).Platinum Gazette approached BurgersfortSAPS Station Commander, Colonel RM vanNiekerk about the photographs and driver’sbehaviour. He agreed that this is not theexample that the SAPS should be setting intown. He added that appropriate disciplinarymeasures will be taken to deal with misconductwhile assuring the newspaper that they aretrying to root out misbehaviour by members ofthe SAPS.The public should take note that stop streets’purpose is reflected in their name. Tubatse Aids Council launchedOn Tuesday this week the Tubatse Aids Council was officiallylaunched.This event at the Greater Tubatse Municipality was attended byvarious stakeholders including NGO’s such as the Aurum Institute,

A 41-year old taxi driver was arrested after heallegedly raped a 12-year old girl on 20 April.The girl was on her way to school in RibaCross when the taxi driver stopped and toldher that he would give her a lift to her school.It was a rainy morning and the girl climbedinto the taxi. The man then drove off with hertowards Burgersfort, but turned off towards avillage and stopped in the bushes. The manthe allegedly assaulted the girl with a belt andtold her to undress before he raped her. Thetaxi driver took the girl’s cell phone and booksand dropped her at Mooihoek village.A women found the girl and assisted her incontacting the police. A case of rape wasopened.On the following day the girl and her fatheridentified the taxi driver at Steelpoort cross inRiba Cross and called the police. The policewas able to arrest the taxi driver andrecovered the girl’s books and cell phone.The accused appeared in the PraktiseerMagistrate’s Court on 23 April on a charge ofrape. He was not granted bail and the casewill be in court again on 2 May 2013.

Big white elephantThe bridge providing a walkway over the busy intersection towardsthe Khadima Centre/Burgersfort Mall and Shoprite/The Palace onthe other side is probably one of the most expensive advertisingboards ever created. This is about the only use the bridge iscurrently getting. The millions spend on constructing the bridgeseems to have been wasted. Pedestrians still choose to rather

make their way between the cars towards the opposite side.The municipality does not fine people for jaywalking in this area.Jaywalking in especially this area is a major concern as crime hasescalated to a very serious point at this intersection.Various cases of ‘smash-and-grab’ or theft through an open windowhave occurred here.

What is jaywalking?

The traffic light at the crossing between Kastania Street and DirkWinterbach Street towards the Greater Tubatse Municipal buildingshad been knocked down. The sign alerting motorists of the trafficlight had also been knocked over. Vandalism of traffic signs is amajor headache for the municipality. It is a criminal act to remove ortamper with a road traffic sign and offenders, if caught, could faceprosecution. Vandalism can be reported to the Chief traffic officer, MrLekwadu at the municipality on 013 231 1000.

Mr Bernard Ndlovu said: “I will try to saveenergy this winter. We don’t have an option.since the prices of electricity escalated somuch I’ve been saving. I switch off what I’mnot using and buy energy saving globes”.

Mr Godfrey Malepe said: “The best thing todo while we are in a rural area is to collectwood and make a fire. Close your home’swindows early and take a bath and go to bedearly. Then you won’t need a heater. That isthe best way to save electricity”.

Mr Silas Konopi said: “There are a few thingslike using energy saving bulbs, regulate thegeyser temperature and switching it off whenyou are not at home that I do. Perhaps Ishould get more blankets this winter to keepwarm. I’ll maybe try to only use the heaterwhile I am awake and to switch it off when Igo to sleep. I will also switch off the TV atnight”.

South Africans will have to save even moreenergy than before as winter approaches.This is the call from both Eskom andMinister of Public Enterprises, MalusiGigaba.2013 will be the year in which Eskom will bedoing maintenance at old power stationsduring the winter. “We have reached a pointwhere we cannot defer plannedmaintenance on the fleet,” said Mr BrianDames, CEO of Eskom this week.Maintenance will be conducted on nine ofEskoms power supply units.Loadshedding is a real possibility. “We willtake whatever measures we need. It meansif we get close, we will drop the load. We willdrop the customers and protect the country”Mr Dames told the media on Monday thisweek. That is why Eskom is calling on allenergy users to save and only make use ofelectricity for essential things during peakperiods.In 2008 coal shortages and maintenance atpower plants forced Eskom to cut electricityto mines. This caused the economy take aserious drop.Eskom usually does maintenance on powerplants during the summer, but during the firstfew months of the year the power stationswere stretched to make up for lost output.The national grid has been operating on a1.5% reserve margin for the past fewmonths.Koeberg’s Unit 1 has been down formaintenance since November last year andthis forced Eskom to use open-cycle gasturbines to replace the lost output.Eskom generates 95% of South Africa’selectricity and was hit by a lack of supplyfrom Mozambique. Disruptions due to floodsat the Cahora Bassa power plant caused adrop in the power generated and supplied toSouth Africa. Low quality coal also reducedthe capacity at the Tutuka power station inMpumalanga.Eskom plans to use a maintenance strategythat will provide 80% power availability, 10%planned maintenance and 10% plannedoutages over the next five years.The newly constructed Medupi power stationis only expected to come into operation byDecember this year.Despite the real possibility of loadsheddingthe Energy Intensive Users Group and theChamber of Mines supports Eskom’sdecision to do maintenance. “Our view isthat Eskom is doing the right thing, sincethey have been postponing the maintenanceof their power stations,” said Mr MikeRossouw, chairman of the Energy IntensiveUsers Group.We asked readers if they will be savingenergy during the winter and how they planto do so.

Mr Josaya Nkoana said: “You can’t save inwinter - you need warm water and a heater.It is very difficult to save”.

Mr Joseph Magoma said: “Where I amstaying now we use a solar geyser. Basicthings like fridges need to be on. Me and myfamily try to switch off the lights when we arenot using it. So I am already saving. Eskommust deliver the message of energy savingpractice to every community. People mustknow they should save and how to save. InSouth Africa I am afraid that when you starthaving a problem with things like electricity orpotholes you have a lifetime problem. It is notsomething that gets better. Perhaps ourgovernment has the wrong approach”.

Tubatse United from Praktiseer took a beating lastweek Sunday when they lost 10-0 to Maatlopo UnitedFootball Club.The game was played at Ntoampe Stadium. TubatseUnited is currently fighting to avoid relegation.Masokolara is still the leading team in the SABregional league with 57 points from 26 games.Makgalanoto Young Chiefs is second with 53 pointsfrom 29 games and Maatlopo United third with 53points from 27 games. Wet, wet, wet at the golfSteelpoort Academy’s annual golf daytook place on Saturday last week. Theday was hosted at Tubatse ChromeClub.Heavy rain all over the region preventedplayers from finishing or even gettingenough play to make a decision aboutthe winners. This resulted in thepostponement until 1 June 2013. Allplayers are asked to keep that date open

to come and take another shot at thecompetition.Although rain slowed the greens andensured players are drenched and cold,a stall hosted by the teachers providedsomething warm before heading towardsthe ninth hole.The school thankedeveryone for their support and troubledespite the weather.
