Schools full of smiles

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines believes in the power of education as a tool to empower future genera-tions. That is just one of the reasons why they’ve invested millions in building class-rooms, a school hall and other educational infrastruc-ture in the last year. This week the Samancor ECM management team visited Mangabane Primary School, Sehlaku High School and Mogolo Secondary School to hand over the com-pleted buildings. At Manga-bane Primary School (photo right) the Grade R class also received educational toys and material.

Mr. Michael Mambolo from Mangabane Primary School and Mr. Emile Britz, General Manager of Samancor ECM.

An investment in the future

Samancor Eastern Chrome Mines believes that the future of the area, their company and the country will be signifi cantly better if everyone can get a proper education. ECM places a high value on this and has put their money where it was much needed. They are busy with various edu-cational infrastructure projects and some of them have been completed. In some of the schools classrooms are already in use and a state of the art hall equipped with a sound and TV system, air conditioners and a special serving area is mak-ing life much easier at Sehlaku High School. A ribbon cutting ceremony took place at Mangabane Primary School, Mogolo Secondary School and Sehlaku High School this week. Mr. Emile Britz this week emphasised ECM’s commitment to-wards education and this area. He encouraged the youngsters to make use of their opportunities and make everyone proud of them. At all the schools that were visited the princi-pals and SGB members present encouraged learners to look after their new buildings. To see it as a community asset and something that they should treasure. The quick handovers were done because ECM be-lieves the buildings should start serving their purpose as soon as possible. The other projects are expect-ed to be completed very soon.

Operation Fiela in Ohrigstad

On Tuesday this week the Ohrigstad SAPS participated in a local Operation Fiela action. Capt. G.P. Mashego, station commander of the Ohrigstad SAPS headed the operation. The police raided a house in Ohrigstad town where they arrested 9 foreign nationals without proper documenta-tion. Amongst those arrested were 6 Zimbabwean, 2 Mozambican and 1 Chinese national. All of them will be charged for contraven-ing the Illegal immigrant Act 13/2002 Sec 49(3). They appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. (Information & photograph: Const. Phokane, Ohrigstad SAPS)

The Executive Management Committee (EMC) of the Limpopo Department of Education is fi rm on improv-ing distribution of learners and teachers supporting material. The department is eager to make sure all learners get their books on time and avoid service delivery barriers. This follows the decision to estab-lish the Departmental LTSM Committee in the current fi nancial year. Parents, teachers and learners will also be assisted with better ways of retrieving study material at the end of each year. Improved retrieval strategy will assist in making sure that reading materials are safely used and returned in good conditions. The EMC also took a decision that the department will increase interactions with different stakeholders to share the programmes and activities of the department and also to plan together with relevant stakeholders.

It was reported in this meeting that the department is currently in the process verify qualifi cations of 547 foreign educators as part of closing the shortage of rare-skilled educators such as those of mathematics, Science and technology. The process will provide the department with a data base of qualifi ed teachers and this will make it easy for the department to incrementally close the gap. The EMC also condemned the situation where commu-nity members interfere with the process of deployment of teachers to schools by refusing to accept teachers even though there is shortage of teachers with such skills in their schools. They also condemned the growing ten-dency where some community members close schools’ gates and disturb the process of learning and teaching. Members of the community are encouraged to visit cir-cuit offi ces should there be anything they need clarity on before they move to the districts and the provincial offi ce.

Land Claims Offi ces

now going mobile

Government will be rolling out mobile land claims offi ces throughout the country. The process is aimed at enabling all qualifying persons to lodge land claims, in addition to the 14 lodgment offi ces situated in all provinces. Acting Cabinet spokesperson Phumla Williams this week said that the process forms part of a comprehensive national com-munication outreach which implements the Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Act of 2014, signed into law by President Jacob Zuma. The Restitution of Land Rights Amendment Act provides for restitution or equitable redress to persons and communities who were dispossessed of land rights after 19 June 1913. All qualifying South Africans who missed the initial 31 De-cember 1998 deadline to lodge land claims have an extended opportunity until 30 June 2019 to do so.

Last week Friday was a day of great joy in Kutullo village between De Hoop Dam and Steel bridge next to the R555 when Northam Plainum’s Booysendal Division handed over new school buildings to the Dinalane Early Childhood Development Centre together with Sandvik, who part-nered with them for the project.Booysendal General Manager, Willie Theron, told the audience compris-ing of traditional leaders, representatives of government departments, local government, children, teachers and parents, that Northham is com-mitted to development in the area and it was apt to assist with infrastruc-ture for the little ones, to prepare them for further education and training. Sandvik on their part also committed themselves to their partnership with Northam, expressing the opinion that new projects to assist with should be identifi ed early and that people should not wait for disasters to strike before something is done. Dinalane’s previous buildings were completely destroyed by a storm a few years ago. Magoshi thanked Northam for their involvement of about R1 million and the District Mayor, Mogobo David Magabe (although not present,) said through a speech delivered on his behalf that the new centre should be looked after as a community asset. The new centre comprises two classrooms, a kitchen, toilets, multi ac-tivity playground and educational aids. After the ribbon was cut and the facilities visited, everybody was treated to lunch.

Big guns, that was what we thought of when we parked the new Volkswagen Golf SV on an open spot next to the road on the accent of the Long Tom Pass for a photo session. The Boers’ 155 mm Creusot cannons in the Boer War gave their nick-name to the pass and it is iconic, just as Volkswagen’s Golf hatch-back is an icon in the motoring world and also worthy of the title ‘big gun’.

Except, this Golf is even bigger. Let’s explain. We have person-al experience of a busy household, with sponsored hockey bags, shopping bags, school bags, plants, friends, their bags, your own bags and everybody’s paraphernalia (‘stuff’ you know) that have to be transported to and through several times a day (all at once).

This new VW can take it, without being too big. Also it is not slow or cumbersome. The ride is fi rm, but not harsh. Noise suppression is very good. The 1.4 TSI petrol Bluemotion Comfortline with 7 speed DSG automatic gearbox we drove out of Volkswagen Highland’s parking lot accelerated eagerly and the bumps in Lydenburg’s atro-cious roads were soaked up (but you could feel them).

As we did not want to damage the car, the pothole test was skipped with diffi culty.

Once on the Long Tom it pulled like a train and stayed tight in the turns, as if on rails, not exactly to the same extent is the smaller Golf, but in normal driving you will not even notice.

Exactly how much bigger you ask?Whereas the back end of a regular Golf can swallow 380 litres

of luggage, the SV can handle 500 litres in its regular confi guration, and because the SV’s back seats can slide back or forth by 180mm, you can also sacrifi ce some legroom to create an even bigger 590 litre boot. For extra versatility the seatbacks have a 40:20:40 split and if you fold them all fl at you can have a 1520 litre wagon. The SV is 83mm longer, 8mm wider and 126mm taller than the Golf hatchback and 48mm of that extra length goes into the wheelbase to give your passengers more stretching space. It is very roomy in the back and if you slide the seats forward a bit you can also recline slightly.

In the SV you’ll fi nd a restyled dashboard with a simple yet func-tional design and high-quality surface materials. On the outside, the SV doesn’t share a single body panel with the regular Golf and its design is conservative and functional, yet avoids looking slab-sided thanks to its wide stance and a prominent line running across the body.

Even the engine choices are more pragmatic than racy, with VW offering a choice between two small turbopetrol units and a 2-litre turbodiesel with world class fuel saving technologies to make your visit to the pumps infrequent.

Prices vary from around R292 000 to R359 200, but that is of course without a whole menu of extras you can specify, which can add considerably to the price if you are in the (up)market.

Lasting impression? Quality, attention to detail, fantastic family vehicle, impressive drivetrains and equally impressive roadholding. Big gun.
