Joy for Maepa PrimaryThe photographs speak for themselves,Maepa Primary School next to the R555between Burgersfort and Ohrigstad had tomake do with a tin shack for a Grade Rclassroom and a stone building adjacent tothe other classrooms was unusable foreducation purposes.

On Wedenesday this week it was downwith the tin shack and in the place of thestone building was a brand new block ofclassrooms that was erected throughsponsors and donors who saw the plight ofthe school.

The main sponsor for the project wasHannah Game Lodge, and with the help ofother sponsors, notable also sponsors as faras Canada, the new building was funded anderected by Y2K Construction. The buildingcomprises a new Grade R classrooom, alibrary, office for the pricipal, Art classroom, aGrade 7 classroom and a computer classthat is already equipped with moderncomputers.

At the offcial opening on Wednesday, MrWayne Dorman of Hannah Game Lodge toldguests at the school that it was not only a

social responsibility project of Hannah, butalso the first step in starting to develop a newgeneration in the area with quality educationto their disposal.

Mr MJ Makofane, the Governance Officerof the Drakensberg Circuit of the Departmentof Education said partnerships are importantas government alone cannot supply in all theneeds of all the communities. He welcomedthe fact that sponsors came forward with allhis heart and said that the next step was forthe community of Maepa to secure land forthe possible future establishment of asecondary school for the area.

The principal of the School, Mr StevenMkhabela in thanking the sponsors also had avery important message for learners in thatthey should be thankful for the opportunitythey are getting and he encouraged them towork hard to make a success of their future.

I wasonce fined for not stopping at the Autozonestop street in Burgersfort. I have a bigconcern about all the animals on the road. The municipality must make a plan. Thefigures released by the Road TrafficManagement Corporation (RTMC) willhowever only be finalised by March whendeaths that occured later, but due to anaccident during the festive period have beenadded.According the RTMC the problem on theroads lies with the behaviour of drivers andnot with the enforcement of the law.Mr Howard Dembovsky from the JusticeProject South Africa says that not enough isbeing done to enforce the law. He wasquoted as saying: “Traffic officers either sit inthe bushes and take photographs or they putup road blocks. No attempt is being made tocurb aggressive driver behaviour”. Heexplained that this include a lack of lawenforcement for moving offences such aspassing on a barrier line or dangerous area, motorists who change lanes without usingtheir indicator lights and who are notstopping at stop signs.Mr Ashref Ismail, spokesman for the RTMCdid not agree. He said: “We are doing ourbest, but drivers are not doing their part. ChevTrailblazer,we drive it

An invite from Westvaal Mashishing’sSteelpoort branch to take a Chev Trailblazer2.8 LTZ 4x2 for a spin on the day after thenewspaper opened, was welcomed, as thereporter was running around and he was hot, very hot. The vehicle is imposing. It is a largeSUV and has no problems in imparting aformidable presence to the prospective driverand on the road. Designed in Brazil and builtin Thailand, the reporter was eager to discoverif it was so taai as it looked. Open the doorsand lo and behold, light, very light leather(almost the colour of milky bar) greeted the eye, with a welcome dark upper for the facia.Inside the vehicle has lots of space, anyonewill be able to fit his or her body easily behindthe steering wheel or any other of the sevenseats with comfort (OK, maybe not socomfortable if you are exceptionally welldeveloped, in the back row of seats, but youwill fit). His or hers used intentionally, becausethe slighter built and smaller women will alsobe able to adjust the electric seats quickly for aproper driving position. O yes, the creaturecomforts include illuminated mirrors inside boththe sunvisors, so no need to dig for one in yourhandbag. So your lipstck or snor has been repaired andstraightened. Onto the road. The diesel enginestarts easily and the air conditioning (which alsohave ducts to the rear seats) hums intooperation. Dailing in the temperature is easyby a rotary knob just above the automatictransmission gear shift. The aircon drown thelight clatter of the diesel and moving the gearselector from park to drive automatically locksthe doors. Release the handbrake and off yougo. The vehicle not only looks big, it is big, but thereis no problem in seeing what is happeningaround as all round visibility is good and themirrors well placed and easily adjustable. Thepower steering is well weighted and the vehiclemoves easily into the traffic.Moving from Steelpoort onto the Lydenburgroad, the SUV feels secure on tarmac and theauto transmission shifts effortlessly up anddown. If used to tow or in difficult circumstancesthe gears can also be changed manually. Thereporter tried it and it worked well, not better orworse than other auto boxes he is familiar with. The vehicle not only moves switfly, but alsobrake very efficiently from high speed as allelectronic gizmos it is equipped with spring intoaction. So it goes well on tar and do not skrik areasonable pothole. It will live well in Sandton(you get potholes there too), Burgersfort andenvirons and any other place you want it to.The aircon is very effective and cools the bigvehicle down very quickly. All the seats in theback can be folded down to create a hugeloadbay for whatever you want to load, even afew bales of hay.Turning onto the Rietfontein road towards RooiIvoor it was soon evident that the Trailblazerwill not only be wonderful with the kids, but alsothe caravan, trailer, jetski, (and mother-in-law),but also on the farm. The 4x2 we tested is nota rough 4x4 overlander, but will handle almostany dirt (bad dirt) with aplomb and with all typesof electronic control, is a very versatile vehiclefor anyone not planning to do the Mongol Rallyon a regular basis.

It will also take to village life like a duck to waterand will transport its driver and occupants withutmost safety, also thanks to the myriad airbagsfitted. The reporter returned the vehicle with apleasent feeling. He had his water bottle in oneof the 11 cupholders for 7 seats (?, maybe forthe very thirsty) he was relaxed, and cool andvery much disappointed. He could not affordone at this stage ...The pices for the range are:Chev Trailblazer 2.5 LT 4x2 M/T - R364 000,Chev Trailblazer 2.8 LTZ 4x2 A/T - R423 500,Chev Trailblazer 2.8 LTZ 4x4 M/T - R454 500,Chev Trailblazer 2.8 LTZ 4x4 A/T - R469 900,Chev Trailblazer 3.6 LTZ 4x4 A/T - R479 500.(Almost forgot: wrappers for the milky bar areavailable)

Simple comforts that aremissed when not added to avehicle includes vanitymirrors and a speciallydesigned case for sun- ordriving glasses. Both easilyfold away into the roof ofthe vehicle.

You will have this in front ofyou when climing into thedriving seat of theTrailblazer. The backlightsmakes it easy to see all thenecessary details for safedriving.
